SAFARI TIPS AND TRICKS

SERVICES IN SAFARIUnder the Safari menu, there are a variety of services that can help you and your students.

TO USE ANY OF THE SERVICES IN SAFARI, YOU MUST FIRST HIGHLIGHT A PASSAGE OF TEXT ON A WEBPAGE.

HOGBAY NOTEBOOKIn order to transfer information from websites to your Hogbay Notebook, simply highlight the text you’d like to keep and go to:

SAFARI>SERVICES>HOGBAY NOTEBOOK

These notes are searchable so you can easily find all the sources having to do with a particular topic by using the search feature on HogBay.

SPEAK NOTESSafari can speak text on a webpage aloud. What a wonderful thing for your oral learners. You will want to have them use earphones, though! Highlight a passage of text on a webpage and go to:SAFARI>SPEECH>START SPEAKING TEXT.

Safari will start reading the text aloud. You can even change the voice! To stop the text from being read aloud, select STOP SPEAKING TEXT.

SUMMARIZESafari also has a feature that allows you to take a large portion of text and summarize it. Go to:SAFARI>SERVICES>SUMMARIZE. The text will appear in a summary box. To make the summary shorter, drag the slider to the left.

TABS IN SAFARI:In order to use tabs in Safari, you must first set your Preferences. Go to:SAFARI/PREFERENCES- Once you are there, click on “Tabs” and check “EnableTabbedBrowsing”

Now you’re ready to use tabs! Tabs work hand in hand with bookmarks. When a folder is opened in tabs, all of the websites in that particular folder will open at once for easy searching back and forth. This is a great way to also channel where your students search. First, click on the bookmark symbol to the far left on your bookmark bar.

Next, decide which folder you would like touse in tabs. Remember, you should use a folderin which you have already created and savedwebsites.

Click on the “Bookmarks Bar” in the left columnand slide the folder into the window to the right.

Once your folder is in the “Bookmarks Bar” click on the Bookmark symbol again to return to the browser.

Now, click on the folder located on the “Bookmarks Bar” and clickOPEN IN TABS

Your websites that were saved inside the folder will open up in tabs:

Google is not necessarily always the best way for students to search on the Internet. HIGHLIGHT any word. Hold down the CONTROL KEY and click on the word. Select Google Search.
