Supplementary material – Referenced list of 366 Precambrian and Cambrian alluvial formations, revealed through a literature survey, which fulfil both of the following criteria: (1) no recorded heterolithic lateral accretion; (2) domination of sandstone strata (>50%). The mudrock content of the formations is generally minimal (see Fig. 1): the asterisked units are those used in the construction of Figure 1 (though note that not all the formations used in the construction of Figure 1 are listed, due to some of these not matching the above criteria (e.g., for the reason that they contain >50% conglomerate).
