N.B. The original 1936 Fellows shown in this list as Fellows of the College of St. Nicolas were appointed as a governing Council. There were three categories of Fellowship, 1) Life, 2) By appointment and 3) Ex-officio (such as the organists of York Minster and Canterbury Cathedral) and, although some fellows moved from one category to another, others ceased to be Fellows when they change their organist's post. From 1963 the awards were personal honours and lifelong.
