Mahonia adds a welcome splash of sunny yellow in the middle of autumn. Close up, the small bell-shaped flowers have a sweet scent. Striking pink paired with turquoise: the glory bower Clerodendrum trichotomum var. fargesii is one of the more unusual natural colour combinations.

Crab apples light up the autumnal garden, in the Country Garden, Arboretum and dotted around. In the Model Gardens, Malus transitoria looks like it is covered in fairy lights, especially when the small, yellow fruits are dripping with dew.

During October the Alpine Meadow becomes a beautiful blue sea of crocuses. Other autumn-flowering gems including Crocus goulimyi, C. boryi, C. niveus, and C. serotinus are among the delights in the Alpine Display House. This is the ideal time to plant their spring-flowering cousins, and from 25 October to 2 November you’re invited to help make your mark on Wisley when we plant crocuses on the Conifer Lawn ready for a colourful show in the spring.

Pretty, nutritious and popular with wildlife, colourful rose hips extend the seasonal interest of the nation’s favourite garden plant.

Some seedheads stand firm into winter. They look stunning covered in cobwebs and frost and add structure, elegance and charm. Look out for sea holly Eryngium and an ornamental liquorice plant Glycyrrhiza yunnanensis on the Glasshouse Borders, plus a variety of grasses here and on Seven Acres. Graceful and statuesque grasses make a compelling display on the borders of Seven Acres near the Garden Library. They look gorgeous covered in dew.

E A Bowles VMH (right) an RHS Council Member for 36 years, Vice-President from 1926 – 1954, was known for his passion for “demented” plants. In Bowles’ Corner look out for twisted stems, crispy holly (Ilex aquifolium ‘Crispa’) and variegated ivies.

Iridescent nerines in October, followed by pungent, silver-leaved plectranthus (members of the mint family) star in the Glasshouse this autumn. Come December, look out for chrysanthemums, cyclamen and a towering display of poinsettias (left)portraying the shape of a Christmas tree.

KBirds gobble up many Sorbus berries, and tend to go for the red and orange ones first. That means these pretty pink berries on Sorbus carmesina on Battleston Hill make more of a show for longer. Chinese in origin, it holds its fruit late into the year before the birds finally feast upon them.
