1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 History of Rel!ve @ Heartlands

Rel!ve @ Heartlands was started to mark Singapore’s Youth & Environment Day in conjunction with World Environment Day as dedicated by the United Nations on the 5th June every year. In its maiden year (2008), the event was held at the Atrium @ Plaza Singapura, which attracted about 100, 000 members of the public over the span of 11 days. The event also brought together over 150 young leaders, with its theme focusing on energy efficiency, specifically green transportation & water conservation. In 2009, Rel!ve @Heartlands (Bugis) saw together over 20, 000 members of the public over the span of 3 days, engaging over 300 youth leaders.

1.2 Rationale of Rel!ve

The event is regularly held in locations where members of the public congregate, so as to maximise its prominence and penetrate into the community, especially with two key groups, the youth community & the elderly. Like the meaning of the word, Re-live, which is to rethink the way one lives, Rel!ve serves as an constant reminder for one to act efficiently to save our environment and to achieve a sustainable lifestyle.

The locations at which Rel!ve is held at, are easy to access and are usually the main centralised area of the particular grassroots community.

Also to attract more crowds, Rel!ve is tied in with a small bazaar of no more than 15 stalls and a carnival. We are currently working on making the bazaar more eco-friendly in the upcoming editions of Rel!ve. In the exhibition, we divided the education framework for sustainable consumption in one’s everyday lifestyle into the following categories: 1. Biodiversity 2. Energy 3. Food 4. Shelter 5. Waste 6. Water

1.3 Objectives of Rel!ve

The main objectives of Rel!ve @ Heartlands are as follows: (a) To empower the public with the concept of re-thinking the way one lives. (b) To enrich the public about the many ways they can contribute to the environment. (c) To ensure that the public practice what they have learnt.

2. EVENT – Rel!ve @ Heartlands (Tampines) – June 2012 2.1 Pre-Event

Rel!ve @ Heartlands (Tampines) was primarily a youth-led initiative, with the set-up of the event focusing on allowing the public to walk about freely with a sufficient amount of space. The space was split into three areas: 2.1.1 Rel!ve Exhibition

We had 4 sets of hexagonal panels where information pertaining to the six different Rel!ve themes were displayed. The panels were in the middle of the tent and were arranged in such a way that the public could walk around with ease. The panels contained information such a summarised definition of the particular theme, the current situation we are in, the importance of these aspects to our lives and what we, as individuals, can do to contribute to a better environment.

2.1.2 Interactive Area + Tetra Pak Recycling Area

We doubled up our information counter as a recycling station and as an education area to allow the people to understand about Tetra Pak’s products & to encourage them to recycle their Tetra Pak drink packets once they’ve done with it.

We also invited other agencies and organizations to exhibit at Rel!ve @ Heartlands (Tampines). The agencies and organizations are as follows:

(a) NEA

NEA provided us with an interactive exhibit that dealt with energy conservation and efficiency. They also provided us with a waste management exhibit and collaterals on dengue prevention. The exhibits allowed the public to learn how to achieve a more liveable and sustainable environment in Singapore.

(b) PUB

PUB provided us with 4 panels that enriched the public on our water management resources in Singapore, which are responsible for the collection, production and reclamation of water in Singapore. They also provided water saving kits that the public can bring back home to install in their own homes.

A new exhibitor at the Rel!ve @ Heartlands (Tampines), Qloov sold tees made from recycled plastic bottles, whose plastic’s chemical name is Polyethylene terephthalate, commonly known as PET or PETE. Our volunteers helped to sell the tees and also to empower the public with the knowledge of recycling plastic bottles.

As Rel!ve started off as a youth-led initiative, we allowed the volunteers to take charge of the event, by creating outfits and publicity posters to encourage the public to visit the exhibits and to learn more about the environment. The volunteers also headed to the nearby MRT stations and surrounding malls to pull more people to the event. At the end of event, the volunteers did a stock check and planned for the next few days.

We experienced a surge in numbers during weekends and in the evenings of weekdays. A total of 800 people attended the Rel!ve @ Heartlands (Tampines) in June 2012, over the course of 14 hours. We also experienced repeat visitors, when they actually brought along their friends and families along for another round.

Our partners were also present at times, to share their ideas and sell their products to the public. Many were intrigued by the idea of tee shirts being made out of recycled plastic bottles (Qloov) and wanted more of such products being sold in their area.

2.3 Post Event + Areas of improvement

After the event, we conducted a feedback session and also came up with new ideas for the future editions of Rel!ve @ Heartlands. For future events, we will be implementing themed events such as exhibitions and/or activities that are surrounded around Sustainable Fashion or Sustainable Food Consumption. In 2013, sales of organic products and themed walks would be conducted with our partner agencies.

3. Conclusion In conclusion, we achieved three important aspects:

(a) The intention to foster positive habits in terms of environmental practices amongst members of the public, (b) To engage the public through the educational exhibition, and (c) To initiate environmental awareness in the grassroots, especially the youth.

Rel!ve @ Heartlands (Tampines) drove the need in members of the public to RETHINK and RELIVE their existing habits. Our partners also assisted in pushing the message by encouraging the public to be more eco-friendly.

We look forward in having more editions of Rel!ve in the grassroots as we deeply believe that this will plant the passion in youths to lead the charge in organizing more environmental events that will actively engage and empower other Singaporeans on lifestyle change.
