LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT
Welcome to the Red Hook Area Chamber of commerce 50th Anniversary Membership Directory & Visitor’s Guide.
The Red Hook Area Chamber of Commerce has been in the business of supporting businesses for 50 years. We are also continually looking for ways to help in our community and work with local government agencies. It has been my sincere pleasure to be a part of Red Hook. It is a fantastic area with an abundance of potential. Our board of directors shares my feelings and agrees that enhanced communication among all entities has been the key to our success. Here are a few examples of what your chamber has done in the past two years:
• Reestablished ribbon cuttings, and added more evening mixers.
• Enhanced communication between Bard College, Red Hook, Tivoli, RH School District, Montgomery Place, and Rhinebeck’s Chamber of Commerce.
• Organized the 1st Northern Dutchess Business Expo (Joint collaboration with Bard College & Rhinebeck COC).
• Created Red Hook Together (Monthly meetings with Bard, Red Hook, Tivoli, school district, Red Hook Chamber, and various community groups).
• Created Red Hook Community Arts Network (Red Hook CAN), using art as a catalyst for community transformation.
• Updated the chamber logo.• Had fi rst ever chamber golf outing.• Opened a business incubator, providing offi ce space and
services for small businesses.• Increased our membership by 70+ members.
With the assistance of our new Executive Direc-tor, Merisue Pozniak, we have been able to reach new heights as a chamber. We have also been able to pro-vide better services to our members, giving them well deserved benefi ts and many networking opportunities.
The Red Hook Area Chamber of Commerce is here to support our local businesses and our growing community.

By the time of the Revolution, the stirrings of an economy were evident; docks along the river shipped out the product from local saw-mills, Thomas’ Tavern and Elmendorph’s Inn were important way stations for travelers along the Albany Post Road, the place to get a meal, a drink and some news in the part of the Rhinebeck district known as “Hardscrabble.” Several of the sawmills were set ablaze by British troops, and a hard scrabble it may indeed have been getting started, but the descendants of the original pat-entees knew they had something special— the land remained in the same families for quite a few generations.
Red Hook’s prominent families were moved to create the “River Places,” a series of grand homes that embodied the state of the art of architecture and good living. Most of these still stand; the Livingston and Beekman families, in particular, built what would become an important part of the Hudson River National Historic Landmark District— poetically named places like The Pynes and Edgewater.
Red Hook incorporated in 1812 and held its first meeting in 1813, not long after Postmaster Van Ness chose little Hardscrabble as the loca-tion of his fine brick mansion, Maizeland. Along-side the aristocracy, a growing population of ten-
ant farmers and business folks found Red Hook a promising place to ply their trades and raise their families. Hamlets evolved: Tivoli, named for its fanciful Italian mansion, and Barrytown, named for a postmaster general. The wool mill, chocolate and tobacco factories, dairy farms and orchards kept local families alive; the docks were busy with blocks of river ice being shipped down the Hudson. The coming of the Hudson River Railroad in 1851 and St. Stephen’s Episco-pal Seminary (now Bard College) in Annandale nine years later fed a vital business and cultural bounty that persists to this day.
That may be the most important fact of Red Hook’s history: it lives. Like the majestic homes at Maizeland and Clermont and Montgomery Place, like the handsome Elmendorph’s Inn, the spirit of the Hardscrabble folks survives. Farming, custom building, and chocolate-making are still practiced with pride; the trains still offer easy access to Al-bany and New York. The opening of Route 9G in the 1930s and of the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge in 1957 made this a convenient “bedroom town” that drew IBMers and other Hudson Valleyites in recent decades to live amongst the descendants of the Livingstons and Beekmans who still make their homes here, enjoying the same scenery that enchanted their long-ago ancestors.
HISTORY
Colonel Pieter Schuyler, first mayor of Albany, was the first European to own the land now known as Red Hook, being confirmed in 1688 as the holder of “Schuyler’s Patent.” The soil near the peninsula (“hoek”), whose bright autumn foliage is rumored to have inspired early navigators to start calling it the “Red Hook,” was fertile, and the location prime— next to the river itself, the Albany Post Road was the only thoroughfare— and by 1752, the patent belonged to four families and was beginning to attract industrious Palatine farmers from nearby Germantown.

A number of traditions are woven into this tasty pattern. If you have a yen for traditional pub fare, the Clubhouse Bar and Grill or the Flatiron Steak House will amply and happily meet your needs in relaxed but classic style. The Flatiron can do intimate-and-elegant with ease, using fresh local ingredients and seafood dishes.
Perhaps you’re in a diner state of mind? Red Hook’s diners are gems, each exceptional in its own way. The Historic Village Diner is a classic of the Silk City style, a vintage 1920s creation that will transport you back in time to the era of ele-gant rail travel. The Apple-a-Day blends laid back family friendly diner vibes with a healthy menu- have the fresh fruit plate instead of the fries, then reward yourself with a slice of Mile High Apple Pie. Barbecue is elevated to an art form at Max’s Memphis BBQ, winner for eight years of “Best in the Hudson Valley” from Hudson Valley Maga-zine. If you prefer gourmet vegetarian fare, Luna 61 serves up an eclectic, organic menu that’s an-other best-of award winner.
Lovers of Italian fare can dine “celebration style” in the warmth of Frank Guido’s Little Italy, on Neapolitan dishes made with fresh local in-gredients, or head to Gigi’s Trattoria for innova-tive and award winning Hudson Valley Mediter-
ranean dishes. Hana Sushi prides itself on the authentic sushi experience; then there’s the Red Hook Curry House for Indian Tandoori dishes.
Time for coffee and dessert? Options are en-ticing and plentiful. The Me-Oh-My Pie Shop and Café bakes specialty pies with fresh local fruit, and they’ll happily serve them up with a scoop or two of Jane’s famed ice cream. Or check out Taste Budd’s; they specialize in chocolate creations, host live music every weekend and of-fer entertainments for kids (as if any kid needed more than chocolate). J&J’ Gourmet Cafe does amazing things with fresh local ingredients, as does Rusty’s Farm Fresh Eatery. And right across the street from Rusty’s you’ll find Holy Cow Ice Cream, a local icon that draws customers from miles around.
The ultimate in fresh and local, of course, is picking your own still warm from the sun. Red Hook’s agricultural traditions are still going strong at a variety of orchards, farms and farm markets, where you’ll find a cornucopia of lov-ingly grown local produce and artisanal food cre-ations. From berries in June, on through peaches and apples to lightly frosted pumpkins, Red Hook’s farmers take enormous pride in keeping the community well nourished.
Since the days when the classic inns offered sustenance to weary travelers along the Albany Post Road, the production, preparation and service of delicious food has been a Red Hook passion. The “locavore” movement— cuisines built around fine, fresh local ingredients, creating a range of beneficial effects for the environment, local economy, and the lucky diner— may be a trendy new idea in some places, but in Red Hook, with its independent restaurants and agricultural heritage, it’s simply the way things are.

Bard College is a creative and brilliant institu-tion, and those qualities inform its wide range of offerings to the community. Many exhibits and lectures are free. Then there are the world-class performers regularly stopping by the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Arts, a work of architectural art in its own right, designed by Frank O. Gehry and offering fare like the Bard Summerscape, a lavish celebration of varied cultural events that “has long been one of the most intellectually stimulating of all American summer festivals and frequently is one of the most musically satisfy-ing,” according to the Wall Street Journal. Bard also offers the Spiegeltent, a glittering tent of mirrors that makes a stunning backdrop for acro-batics, cabaret acts, and musicians— and a great place to go dancing.
Architectural marvels in Red Hook did not, of course, begin with Frank O. Gehry. The great A.J. Davis created a neoclassical masterwork at Montgomery Place, sited on 380 magnificent acres where the public is welcome to stroll and picnic. The country estate was the creation of Janet Livingston Montgomery in 1805 and re-mained in family hands until Historic Hudson Valley took over in the 1980s, performing a me-ticulous restoration. House tours are available every hour.
Clermont, the original Livingston family stronghold, is even older; Robert Livingston built it in the 1730s on land he’d inherited from Robert Senior, who bore the official title of “First Lord of the Manor.” The brick Georgian mansion was burned by British troops in 1777, but was soon rebuilt by Margaret Beekman Livingston and be-came an agricultural marvel, as well as the coun-try stronghold of one of the area’s most influential and involved families. It was Margaret’s son who, while in Paris negotiating the Louisiana Purchase, developed a partnerhip with steamboat dreamer Robert Fulton; a boat called the Clermont would soon revolutionize transportation. Clermont’s last significant renovation was in the 1920s; it has been restored to that era, and visitors can enjoy a variety of tours and educational programs.
There is a reason why Livingstons lived here, a great educational institution is sited here, and the likes of A.J. Davis and Frank O. Gehry chose the region as a backdrop for major works. It’s the same reason there’s a subspecies of painting called the Hudson River School— the spectacular, magnetic majesty of the Hudson River herself. And Red Hook offers the premiere location for taking it all in: Poets’ Walk, a 120 acre masterwork of Roman-tic landscape architecture created in 1849 and pre-served by Scenic Hudson. Admission is free.
ATTRACTIONS
Finding something fun to do in Red Hook is never a problem. The problem is choosing among the intriguing options. This is a town that relishes life, and you’re very much invited to join in. Our two major community festivals, Hardscrabble Day in Autumn and Apple Blossom Day in Spring, bring everyone out into the street together for parades, music, vendors and family fun; there are countless other events hosted by organizations of all sorts, from art openings to community holiday celebrations.

10 RED HOOK AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
If you’re considering a move here, options abound. The town of Red Hook actually includes two villages—Red Hook and Tivoli—and the ham-lets of Barrytown, Annandale-on-Hudson, and Upper Red Hook. There are neighborhoods, like Clermont, and neighboring zones like Elizaville and Milan. Each has its charms.
You’ll find seasoned independent profession-als eager to help you find the perfect spot. Fivels-dal’s blog, at Jfivehomes.com, will give you the inside scoop on the market and various other aspects of the community. The housing market slump has been felt here, as everywhere, but Red Hook is home to the kind of folks who cre-ate their own opportunity—people like Fivelsdal or her fellow realtor Cathie Mondello, who grew up here and moved back when it was time to raise her own family, wanting her kids to have the solid education and sense of community Red Hook had given her. “My sisters and I often thought we would love to work directly in town,” says Mondello, who sold real estate for three de-cades in neighboring Columbia County. “Due to the plunging market, most of the real estate agencies closed or moved out. My sisters and I saw the space where we are today and decided to throw caution to the wind and signed a year lease. We’ve been thriving and are celebrating our first year here this Saturday with an old-fash-ioned ribbon cutting.”
Opportunities for homebuyers have never been better. Red Hook offers a diversified hous-ing stock—everything from preserved historic gems to modern flights of fancy, something to suit every taste and pocketbook. If you’re among the fortunate folks looking for luxury digs, you can find them here—for under a million five, one can find estate properties with views, water, out-buildings and more. Stylistic options range from an intact 18th-century Dutch stone farmhouse on 114 acres to “South Hampton style” contem-poraries with all the trimmings. Under a million, you’ll still find an abundant array of stunning choices, there are immaculately preserved Victo-rians, farmstead and B&B possibilities, converted barns with beamed 12-foot ceilings...all waiting for someone new to love.
Between three and five hundred thousand, one can easily locate three or four comfortable bed-rooms with plenty of extras—gourmet kitchens, wood floors, master suites, acreage and views are just a few of the perks that have helped define the good life a la Red Hook. And if you’re bar-gain hunting, this is the moment to get in on the ground floor. “One can purchase a typical 3 bed-room, 2 bath home for about $235,000, or a more modest home under $200,000,” says Mondello.
All price ranges, of course, include the bonus-es you’ll enjoy just by living here—literally, too many to list.
People move to Red Hook for all sorts of reasons. Realtor Jennifer Fivelsdal ticks off just a few: “Some come for the schools. Others are drawn by the open space. Some people fall in love with the sense of community—there’s a lot going on and lots of opportunities to get involved.”

The district’s official mission statement reads “to develop in its students the knowledge, intel-lectual integrity, and social consciousness to pre-pare them to accept the obligations and oppor-tunities found in a complex society.” Lofty words on a website are easily written and forgotten in some places, but not here. Many a family has moved to Red Hook simply for its schools.
State of the art teaching, with plenty of indi-vidual attention customized to students’ needs, strengths and learning styles, begins in the ear-liest grades. The district collaborates with local historic sites such as Clermont, local farms and businesses, and with Bard to open young minds up wide and inspire a yearning for excellence.
The middle school and high school are both located in the village, allowing the schools to oc-cupy their rightfully central place in the life of the community. Award-winning sports teams play on well-maintained facilities, and townsfolk come out in droves to cheer them on. Band and chorus performances offer young musicians a chance to shine, getting accustomed early to a world-class stage in concerts at the Fisher Center.
The Bridges program (Bard College and Red Hook Schools Integrating and Developing Goals for Enrichment of Students through the Arts) is a partnership that’s been operating since 1984,
bringing more than 150 musicians, dancers, cho-reographers, actors, puppeteers, playwrights, and visual artists from the Hudson Valley and New York City into the schools in the past ten years. Bridges is a regular winner of grant funding, meaning that Red Hook’s children enjoy cultural bounty at minimal cost to the taxpayers.
It all comes together at Red Hook High. Red Hook kids can participate in the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program, an interna-tionally acclaimed and intensive educational sys-tem that combines deep and broad coursework in core subjects with experiential methods, electives and a study of the art of learning itself. IB, and the fact that so many Red Hook students participate in IB and Advanced Placement exams, is one of several reasons why Red Hook High School has made Newsweek’s list of America’s top high schools for six straight years. Only six percent of the public high schools in America make the cut.
But education in Red Hook isn’t just for the high achievers. Interdisciplinary teams of teach-ers and administrators are constantly working together on strategy. Differentiated instruction, research-based programs, appropriate interven-tions, and curriculum-based assessments aren’t just words—they’re tools Red Hook’s teachers use every day, to reach every child.
Educational opportunities in Red Hook begin at an early age, with Montessori at the Old School House, offering a comprehensive and nurturing curriculum for preschoolers. Educational opportunities in Red Hook could be said to never end, what with the quirky, eclectic Bard campus right in town. Despite these standouts, however, some of the most exciting educational news in town is regularly made by the town’s own public school system. Anyone who thinks American public education a failure—or even moderately substandard—needs to come take a few lessons from the educators of Red Hook.

The Hearthstone Motel will provide a comfort-able and clean room two and a half miles out of town complete with cable, Wi-Fi, phone, air con-ditioning, microwave and fridge—perfect if you’re in town on business and need a low-key place to hang your hat.
Other establishments are Personality Plus, proudly promoting the stylistic vision of the management. On Hemingway Lane, for example, at the Hemingway Lane B&B, innkeeper Johanna Bard maintains a breezy tropical ambiance that’s based on a Hudson Valley recreation of Hawaii, where she lived for eleven years. Her single guest room will succor your spirit; the lanai invites re-laxation—it’s “a little bit of aloha,” she likes to say. Then there’s the Stone Church Bed and Breakfast, a country contemporary on eight pretty acres ten minutes from the center of the village. At Stone Church, a common room offers ping pong, board games and a library along with more usual items like cable TV, and there’s a bottomless cookie jar on top of the fridge— rather like staying with an indulgent relative.
Linda Murphy, hostess at the Bird’s Nest, sees quite a few indulgent relatives. “We get a lot of Bard parents,” she says. “It’s not fancy and an-tique—it’s a comfortable two-bedroom apartment with a full kitchen and bath and a nice big deck over the garden, and we give you breakfast. One
man said it was like staying at Grandma’s.”If fancy and antique is what you’re seeking, try
the Grand Dutchess Bed and Breakfast. This 1874 classic in the heart of the village offers an escape to another century, managing to be elegantly formal and warmly welcoming at the same time. It’s all about light, airy rooms decorated with heir-looms, river views, and attention to detail.
Then there’s the Red Hook Country Inn, de-scribed by a reviewer as a “perfect” blend of fam-ily trip and romantic getaway. Your host, Chef Nabil, has studied cooking in five countries and specializes in Kosher delicacies; the real secret to the recipe, it’s said, is the individual care taken about the desires and needs of every guest. The outdoor hot tub is also highly regarded.
The Gaslight Inn, in the DeCarolis family for four decades, has the refreshing and pristine se-renity of a beautifully kept country retreat. It’s all about spectacular Catskills views, strolling over to Greig Farms to pick some fruit to go with the free-range local meat you picked up for the grill after a day antiquing.
“The bottom line is, a visit to Red Hook should be on everyone’s “bucket list,” says resident Cath-ie Mondello. “You will feel as welcome as if you were in your own neighborhood.” Red Hook’s innkeepers are a gifted group, and invite you to make our town your special place.
LODGING
If you or someone you know is planning a visit to Red Hook from out of town, you’ll find options as diverse and charming as the town itself. You’re not going to find the generic and forgettable rooms that are standard at every highway exit in the land. Instead, you’ll find coziness, gracious hospitality and the amenities you’ll need.

The Red Hook Community Arts Network (CAN) grew out of the Chamber’s Cultural De-velopment Committee in recognition of the major role the creative arts play in Red Hook’s vitality. “There’s so much beauty to paint,” says co-chair Betsy Jacaruso, a painter and art teach-er. “The New Hudson River School is still being drawn by the things that magnetized artists a century or more ago— fortunately much of it has been preserved, CAN is dedicated to creating an environment that engages creativity, art, and cul-ture as a catalyst for community transformation, sustainability, prosperity and livability.”
To that end, they’ve arranged for local art to hang in local businesses—Ulster Savings, Mondello Realty and several eateries are hap-pily on board— and are aiming to coordinate gallery openings and planning an Arts Walk. The resources are all there— there are a variety of galleries thriving in town— and the member-ship diverse: visual artists, performance artists, writers, musicians, business owners, landlords, village and town officials, and educational and arts related institutions. “Our dream is a home in the heart of town somewhere, and making this town a top destination for arts and culture,” says Jacaruso.
The intelligence and energy of Red Hook are being applied on a daily basis to creating and maintaining a community that our great-grandchildren will be glad to live in, as citizens work together to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Collaboration is the key to our economic, environmental and overall well-being; beyond the Chamber itself, two key organizations are working on putting a lot of the pieces together in a way that makes sense.
Another active community organization, Red Hook Together, strives to blend the cultural, agricultural, educational, business and tourism endeavors of Bard College, the Red Hook Cham-ber of Commerce, school district, and the towns and villages of Red Hook and Tivoli to create a sustainable community, preserving the region’s resources while aiding development.
That mission statement is taken seriously. At a recent meeting, topics ranged from historic pres-ervation efforts to the 10% Challenge sustainabil-ity initiative, from how to help the schools raise funds to ways in which Bard students can pitch in to help celebrate the upcoming Bicentennial. Other projects in progress included grantwriting, a sister city relationship, community gardens, Career Day at Red Hook High, and the annual Golf Tournament.
Red Hook Together, led by Bard Dean of Stu-dents Erin Canaan and her colleague Elizabeth Giglio, and CAN, which Jacaruso co-chairs with fellow painter Kari Feuer, are vital resources as Red Hook evolves, becoming an ever richer tapestry of creativity, brilliance, and good times, applying the wisdom of a community that has been sustaining those qualities for two centuries to the reality of right now. Smart growth, Red Hook style.
COMMUNITY INITIATIVESEd Pruitt emccees the Red Hook Community Arts Network kickoff on April 29th
