Which tzedakah organization is endorsed by the gedolei hador? It’s not every day I contribute a sum like this, so I want to make sure my money goes to the right place”

The gabbai of Zichron Moshe was at a loss for what to reply.

Greetings with love. I received your esteemed letter about

the large-scale mitzvah of tzedaka of which you are

in charge. Since I am close to Kupat Ha’ir, the famous

tzedaka [organization] of Bnei Brak, I can confirm that

it is entirely a mitzva leshma with no faults at all, and

fortunate is he who contributes to it.

All show touching photos and impressive financial reports. All organizations have many things in common, making them pretty similar. Is there any one organization that stands apart from the rest? To be honest, I don’t know.”

The gabbai of Zichron Moshe is a diligent man who tries to do his job faithfully. If the contributor wanted an organization in Eretz Yisroel endorsed by the gedolei hador, he would verify with the gedolei hador directly rather than rely on the organizations

themselves, which can say whatever they like.

Letters and More LettersThe gabbai sat down and penned a letter detailing his question. In his letter, he asked the gedolim to name a tzedakah organization that they trusted and endorsed. He then sent the letter off to various

gedolei hador.

The first response came, and then another, and another, and another.

The gabbai could not believe what had happened. It was as if the elderly gedolim had made up among themselves what to reply... as if it was a well-known, self-understood fact. As if there

was nothing more obvious or simple...

What did they say? Amazing! The gedolei Yisrael, each from his own perspective, all held the same

response! What does that tell us? What should it tell us?

I am familiar with the large institution where everyone

works l’shem Shamayim to help families and extricate

them from the poverty from which they suffer and that is

the institution named Kupat Ha’ir of Bnei Brak.

Another personal aspect:At Kupat Ha’ir, the donation was received with excitement and joy. Naturally, the gabba’im’s brains began working quickly, already calculating how many families would be helped and how to make the most out of the money. It isn’t every day a contribution of that size comes in, even at Kupat Ha’ir. Amidst the excitement and happiness over the contribution, the gabba’im’s attention was suddenly diverted to these letters, attached to the contribution, and their feelings and emotions

changed completely. Suddenly, their hands trembled and their eyes grew damp. Their words

stuck in their throat.It isn’t easy to work for Kupat Ha’ir. You eat tzaros, sleep distress, hear sobs and listen to sighs. It isn’t easy to meet tragedy face to face day after day; the squeaking bedsprings and pounded pillows of each of the volunteers attest to that. Sometimes, they feel they haven’t the strength to go on any longer. Their souls cannot bear the pain they encounter, the

wretchedness and misery, the heartbreak...These letters, containing the responses of the gedolei hador, illuminated their hearts with a brilliant light. They flooded the gabba’im with warmth and strength, recharging their batteries with energy.After all, earning the trust of the gedolei hador is a rare zechus.The zechus of the rabbanim, of the gabba’im, of everyone involved in Kupat Ha’ir’s activism – and above all, the zechus of the thousands of contributors, the “fuel” upon which this amazing machine runs!

Maran Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a, davening on behalf of the contributors to Kupat Ha’ir at the kever of the Chazon Ish, zy”a, on his yahrtzeit, 15 Cheshvan 5766.

Not only does Maran Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky shlit”a, accept contributions on behalf of Kupat Ha’ir, not only does he

instruct those who ask him where to contribute their money to give it to Kupat Ha’ir; Harav

Kanievsky considers Kupat Ha’ir the tzedakah organization of the gedolei hador. As a result, he

is willing to invest a lot more time and effort in the organization than could possibly be expected.

Though Harav Kanievsky’s willingness to spend time praying for the contributors to Kupat Ha’ir during the

holiest, most personal moments of the year is already well known, those who witness the scene each time never fail to be amazed.

Every evening the names of all that day’s contributors are forwarded to Harav Kanievsky, shlit”a. This means that Harav Kanievsky has agreed to tack on to his already crowded schedule yet another undertaking – daily prayers on behalf of the contributors to Kupat Ha’ir. Whoever is familiar with Harav Kanievsky’s extremely tight schedule and with the way he zealously guards every second – cannot help but be impressed. After all, it must be that davening for

the contributors of Kupat Ha’ir comes at the expense of other things... learning, answering questions, seeing callers. And if this is Harav Kanievsky, shlit”a’s top priority, we must try to place our tiny footsteps inside his giant ones and try to follow in his ways.

When Harav Kanievsky, shlit”a, visits the gravesites of his ancestors, ztvk”l, he remembers Kupat Ha’ir and its contributors.

On 15 Cheshvan, Harav Kanievsky visited the grave of the Chazon Ish, as he does every year on the anniversary of the great tzaddik’s passing. Once again, he took along with him the list of contributors to Kupat Ha’ir, and once again, those present shook their heads in disbelief and marveled to themselves. Even at such a holy time, when communing with his rebbe the Chazon Ish zy”a, Harav Kanievsky, shlit”a, takes along our names, the names of the contributors. He mentions them reverently, one by one, and an abundance of blessing descends from On High.

Erev Yom KippurErev Yom KippurOn erev Yom Kippur, the lists were

delivered after an operation of incredible scope that included collecting envelopes, opening them, organizing the names and sending them to the gedolim. Wonderful Jews spent all day running around (on a volunteer basis, of course... they, too, were seeking merits), foregoing a proper seudas hamafsekes and the merit of entering the holy day in a calm and serious frame of mind. The operation, which included a sea of small details, ran like a Swiss clock thanks to the unmistakable siyata dishmaya that accompanied it from beginning to end. Harav Kanievsky received the names, but there were those at Kupat Ha’ir who were still uneasy.

After Kol Nidrei, Reb Yitzchak Shaul, Rav Kanievsky’s son, was asked to approach his father with the following question. “Perhaps there are people who

contributed only because they knew Abba would pray for them? What if some names were mistakenly omitted? Who can be

sure there were no mistakes? When processing such a huge volume of contributions in such a brief space of time, you can’t be sure...”

“I especially recited a few chapters of Tehillim for those whose names were inadvertently omitted,” Harav Kanievsky replied, restoring a sense of calm. Quietly and without fanfare, as is his wont, he brought down yeshuos by reciting Tehillim for the contributors to Kupat Ha’ir.

Kol Nidrei Eve, before the ma’ariv prayer that ushers in the holiest day of the year... can we grasp the greatness these moments hold for a man of such giant stature? How much can be accomplished during these moments... to what degree they can be utilized!The contributors to Kupat Ha’ir don’t lose out. Their names “rise, are heard and remembered” for good tidings, salvation, and consolation.

SukkosSukkosOn chol hamoed Sukkos, Harav Kanievsky traveled to the Kosel, but because it was so crowded, he didn’t leave the vehicle in which he had come. Instead, he poured out his prayers inside the car. The gabba’im of Kupat Ha’ir were there, looking disappointedly at the crowds and holding the lists that apparently would not be used this time.

To their amazement, Kupat Ha’ir and its contributors were not forgotten. Harav Kanievsky summoned for the gabba’im of Kupat Ha’ir to enter the car and give him the list

of contributors. The gabba’im hurried to the little car and entered. Harav Kanievsky took the lists and began praying... The air of the car was soon filled with names, prayers, and personal requests large and small. In the meantime, the Kosel plaza throbbed with people trying to get a peek, to mention their names, to receive a bracha. Inside the car, however, Harav Kanievsky patiently recited name after name, and all the contributors merited a heartfelt, emotional tefilla on their behalf.

When standing with Harav Kanievsky opposite the Kosel, facing Hashem, you can only look at the back of the silently swaying figure. When you’re inside a car with him, you can

see a lot more.

And there was what to see. Despite the uncomfortable feeling that they were penetrating Harav Kanievsky’s privacy, the gabba’im clearly felt that Harav Kanievsky considered a trip to the Kosel without davening for the contributors of Kupat Ha’ir an incomplete visit.

Lists?Lists?But this visit, too, had a “sequel.” On 7 Cheshvan, Harav Kanievsky’s grandson, Harav R’ Aryeh, shlit”a, made a bris for his son in Yerushalayim, at the

home of Harav Elyashiv, shlit”a. When Harav Kanievsky made the decision to attend, Kupat Ha’ir was hopeful that

Harav Kanievsky would utilize the opportunity to daven for the

contributors at the Kosel.

However, for various reasons, Harav Kanievsky intended to return to Bnei Brak

immediately after the bris. Kupat Ha’ir shelved the idea with no small measure of

disappointment.

En route to Yerushalayim, Harav Kanievsky’s son, Reb Yitzchak Shaul, mentioned to his father that Kupat Ha’ir had requested that he daven for the contributors at the Kosel. He, too, knew his father

was in a hurry to return home. Harav Kanievsky listened but said nothing.

The bris took place on schedule, and when it was over and Harav Kanievsky entered the car to return to Bnei Brak, he suddenly said, “Nu, we spoke about going to the Kosel. Let’s go.”

All the details - how Kupat Ha’ir found out within minutes that Harav Kanievsky was going to the Kosel, after all, how they turned the world upside down to fax the names to the Kosel Police, – all that is unimportant.

Harav Kanievsky arrived at the Kosel and immediately looked around to see who was holding the lists...the lists!

“Where is the list of contributors?” he asked. Taking them from an outstretched hand, he made his way to the Kosel, where he poured his soul out in prayer to our Father in Heaven. Everyone who happened to be at the Kosel at the time longed to have the same merit.

The moments ticked by, and the hearts of all those present beat with antiipation, but only when all the pages were finished and every contributor and his or her specific request had been specifically mentioned - only then did Harav Kanievsky look up and listen to the requests of the others present.

The Full StoryOf Hagaon Harav Kanievsky’s Trip to

the Kosel as told by his son, Hagaon Harav Y.S. Kanievsky,

shlit”aAt first, it was agreed that my father would not travel to the Kosel. For various reasons, it was urgent that we return immediately after the bris. During the trip, I told my father about Kupat Ha’ir’s request that he daven for the contributors at the Kosel Hama’aravi. My father, shlit”a, did not reply.

After the bris, my father said, “Nu... we spoke about the Kosel Hama’aravi. Let’s go to the Kosel.” My feeling was that my father considered it obvious that if Kupat Ha’ir had made a request, it should be honored immediately.

As soon as we arrived at the Kosel, my father asked me for the list of

contributors to Kupat Ha’ir. He concentrated upon them with great intensity and immersed himself in heartfelt prayer. Crowds gathered as my father continued to pray for the contributors. Only later did he accept kvitlach and lists from bystanders.

I can testify that the main part of his tefilla at the Kosel was for the contributors of Kupat

Ha’ir to be helped in whatever area they had requested.

on Purim day.

the rabbanim, shlit”a. One hundred percent of the contributions are

transferred to evyonim. Cash will be distributed on Purim day even

on behalf of those who contribute by check or credit card.

The money is distributed with extreme discretion and confidentiality, which is the highest form of tzedaka.

The four letters in this booklet illustrate the massive, “wall-to-wall,” incomparable support of the gedolei hador for Kupat Ha’ir. What is it about Kupat Ha’ir that has earned the unstinting support of the giants of our generation?

There are many good answers to this question, each of which – on its own – is enough to make Kupat Ha’ir the “default setting,” the only possible choice.

The terrible economic situation in Eretz Yisrael combined with the cruel budget cuts and impossible chokehold with which the State is gripping those of limited means (and most of the Orthodox community fits that description) means that lack has become a steady guest in many homes. In many cases, the overdraft in the bank is not caused by a one-time large expense, so a one-time large provision of cash will not solve the problem. The overdraft comes about because there’s no way in the world to squeeze by on the meager salaries paid for most jobs in a country where the cost of living is skyrocketing. It is simply impossible to support a large family under such circumstances. There are no cushy jobs with huge salaries in the Orthodox community in Israel. There are only jobs that require intensive effort and long hours - and pay a pittance. When a mother has small children and can’t work long hours – and this is the situation in many homes – there’s no way to support the family. Cuts in National Insurance stipends have turned many respectable families into potentially needy ones. A crisis in the form of

an illness or a job layoff; a difficulty such as a sick child or the loss of property – pulls the ground out from under them.

Kupat Ha’ir’s “nerve center” is in Bnei Brak, but aid is extended far beyond. In every city and settlement in Eretz Yisrael, rabbanim involved in the lives of their communities make lists of the names of the families requiring financial assistance. Each month, these requests are presented to Kupat Ha’ir, which reviews them and provides aid accordingly. More and more families begin to feel life is livable again. The loving support provided by fellow Jews abroad is fuel for a factory.

Every city; every settlement. The huge relief synonymous with Kupat Ha’ir reaches the most remote spots in Eetz Yisrael. . It doesn’t matter where you live; it makes no difference how far away you are from Bnei Brak. Kupat Ha’ir rises to the occasion and helps – as far as its hand reaches.

Kupat Ha’ir meets the families - beautiful, respectable families that have fallen upon difficult times - at a crossroads in their lives. Sometimes the background is medical, sometimes emotional, sometimes something else – but it is still important for them to continue being a whole family, a functioning family, a family whose children see their house as a home.

they need to rescue them from the quicksand pulling them down. In truth, though, that is rarely the case. Most of the time, a huge ocean of debt will swallow up the support in no time, and one month down the road, you would never know it had been given. In many cases, there’s no one in the family capable of using the money intelligently, and it disappears without leaving a trace...

Kupat Ha’ir provides steady, continuous support for as long as the person/family needs it. The support is monetary, but it brings mental and emotional relief as well. It gives people back their enthusiasm and energy to try and do something to extricate themselves from the rubble and strive for a better life. That’s why monthly support is so important, so revitalizing. NIS 2000 per month makes it possible for the members of the family to live. There’s food today. It’ll be okay tomorrow and the next day, too. There’s no need to hoard food for the next week... Steady support helps people feel a certain sense of security in their lives; it enables them to think about what lies beyond their daily meal.

Kupat Ha’ir assesses the situation and provides assistance in accordance with its findings. If handing over cash is not an option, lest it be gone before it is felt, the family receives coupons redeemable at the supermarket, a card is opened in their name at the grocery, vegetable and chicken orders are arranged. In other cases, a cleaning woman is hired to give the house a normal appearance or an avreich is employed to learn

with the children who have been irreversibly affected by the ongoing neglect. Not always is there someone in the house capable of doing these things.

The amount of time assistance is provided is also a determining factor.

Kupat Ha’ir always considers what is best for the family and decisions are made accordingly. Assistance is provided for as long as necessary - be it eight months or ten or twenty. If the situation requires and justifies continued support, it will be provided regardless of how much time has passed. The main thing is that the family should live like human beings.

The situation is always closely monitored and every few months, a special meeting to review the various situations is held. Nothing continues to flow today just because it flowed yesterday and the day before. At the same time, though, support is never cut short because “time is up.”

Every soul is an entire world. Every family has a future.Can a price be placed upon a Jewish life?Is there anything more precious than the welfare of a Jewish family?The whimpers of small children, the outcry of their mothers, the sigh of their fathers – what do these do in Shamayim?

What do they do to us, to our hearts, the hearts of their brethren?

In one day, two unexpectedly large contributions were made to Kupat Ha’ir.

The first came from a Jew who called to inquire how much it cost to have a name forwarded to the rabbanim for a blessing.

The telephone operator explained that there was no minimum requirement at all. “If you make any contribution at all, we will forward the name you submit to the rabbanim,” she explained.

The Jew was pleased. “Okay, take down my son’s name... Here’s my credit card number...” He read the digits to the operator, and when she inquired how much he wanted to contribute, her heart nearly stopped at his response.

“50,000 shekels,” he said, much the way you and I would say “ten dollars.”

Later that day, a young man arrived at the office. It was obvious he was excited and extremely emotional.

“Here is $1,000,” he said, practically dancing. “I’ll be back soon with another $800, G-d willing.” His voice was so filled with joy that the gabbai in the office could not help fixing him with a questioning look.

“I had a baby boy yesterday,” he explained with no further prompting. “He was born suddenly, at home, and the situation was an emergency. I can’t begin to describe the panic that arose. We called Hatzala and Magen David Adom, but by the time they arrived, the baby was practically black. One of the Hatzala members later told us that he had called Magen David Adom to confirm the child’s death. He said it was clear to him that this was a lost case; there was nothing that could be done. He kept trying, though.”

Tears welled up in the father’s eyes as he recalled those desperate moments. “They said they would take my wife to the hospital so she could recuperate from the ordeal. There was no hope for the child. I kept pleading with them to try again, to breathe life into him...

“We sped to the hospital, where I was told that even if they succeeded in resuscitating him, he would surely be brain damaged. I don’t know where the idea came from, but I suddenly shouted that if the child lived and was healthy, I’d contribute $1800 to Kupat Ha’ir.

“They worked on him for a long time... the child is okay. The hospital took all sorts of tests, and nothing was damaged.”

The father left to borrow the remaining $800 from friends and acquaintances, his feet skimming the ground. Everyone in the office, who had listened to the story with bated breath, sighed with relief. It’s chilling to hear a story like that, even if you know in advance that it ends well.

(In the meantime, a few months have passed, and it’s clear that the child is perfectly healthy.)

For the For the Fourth TimeFourth TimeThe above story is reminiscent of a letter received by Kupat Ha’ir along with a contribution made with great

joy and emotion.

The parents had left the house to prepare for an upcoming

close family simcha, leaving the children with a responsible babysitter.

It’s unclear how – but the baby fell out of his crib and began screaming hysterically.

The babysitter called her mother, and the two tried to calm the baby, with no success.

The parents returned and succeeded in calming their child. They examined him from all sides and everything seemed to be okay. Late at night, the mother noticed that the child seemed apathetic. They hurried to the hospital, where the child was subjected to a battery of tests, all of which proved to be in order. Still, the doctors agreed with the parents that the child did not seem well.

The mother told the doctors that it seemed to her that the child was having stomach pains. More tests were performed, and this time, the problem was discovered: the child’s intestines had twisted, like a scrunched up sock. The solution was to try and inflate them. If that didn’t work, surgery, including removing part of the intestines, would be necessary.

The child was immediately prepped for the inflation process. It was an emergency situation, and the distraught parents stood outside the room and poured their hearts out to Hashem. The doctor made his first attempt – nothing. Another – no change. A third – the intestines remained twisted.

“We need to operate, the sooner the better,” the

parents were told.

The father made a contribution to Kupat Ha’ir and asked the doctor

to try one more time. An attempt made before a contribution to Kupat Ha’ir cannot compare to one made thereafter.

The doctor was not optimistic. There was no point, he felt, in trying again, but the father pleaded with him so...

And the next attempt - the one after the contribution had been made – was

successful.

What inspires people to waste their time and effort on repeated experiments? Perhaps, like a drowning man clutching a straw,

they’re prepared to try anything before arriving at what appears to them to be the hardest thing of all. The difference is that the

“straw,” in this case, turns out to be an incredibly sturdy support, a thick rope during moments of crisis and a speedboat away from tragedy.

A Jew from Bnei Brak suffering from intolerable pain in his ears went to see an ear specialist. The doctor, a generally optimistic fellow, sent him directly to the emergency room.

“This is not the type of thing that can be treated at home,” he said. “Go to Tel Hashomer immediately.”

The man returned home feeling terribly confused.

“I’m supposed to give a shiur in Yerushalayim tomorrow,” he said to his wife. “I can’t forgo it...I would take a taxi to Tel Hashomer, but I’m afraid they’ll hospitalize me. You know what? I’ll contribute the taxi fare to Tel Hashomer and back to Kupat Ha’ir. Maybe that will help.”

He contributed and retired for the night. In the morning, he was a new man. No

hospital, no pain, no

hospitalization. Nothing at all.

Subsiding SymptomsSubsiding SymptomsThe family of a man who had undergone surgery two days earlier pleaded with the doctors to discharge him for Shabbos. While a longer hospitalization had been planned originally, it was physically very difficult to make arrangements for a Shabbos in the hospital.

The doctors agreed but warned the family to keep an eye out for certain developments that might arise; if they did, he was to return to the hospital immediately.

On Shabbos morning, the feared developments appeared. The mother of the family promised to contribute $100 to Kupat Ha’ir immediately on Motzoei Shabbos if everything turned out okay. The alarming symptoms immediately subsided, and they remained at home.

On Motzoei Shabbos, they returned to the hospital, where they were informed that everything was in order. The woman kept her promise and sent a check for NIS 440 to Kupat Ha’ir.

When the family received its next bank statement, she was shocked to discover that on the very same page, in the listing of transactions carried out on the same day, NIS 440 had been withdrawn from her account and NIS 440 had been refunded by their health care provider.

MiscellaneousMiscellaneousA contributor wrote that he accepted upon himself to contribute NIS 10 if his father found a buyer for a Megilas Esther he had written before the upcoming Purim. Five minutes after he made the promise, the telephone call came that eventually led to the sale.

Tel: 052-8983249P.S. relates that while she always read and marveled at the stories of yeshuos in the Kupat Ha’ir brochures, it never occurred to her to try contributing herself. However, when her daughter graduated seminary and still hadn’t found a job a year later, she declared that when she found a job, she would contribute all her ma’aser money to Kupat Ha’ir.

The following day, she was offered a job as a substitute teacher. Interestingly enough, she had no “pull” at all in the school that offered her the job.
