orthern Center for Lifelong Learning (NCLL) is an organization whose members plan, coordinate and provide informal educational

programs and events to enrich the lives of its members. Membership is open to adults of any age and membership is not needed to attend programs/events. On the basis of membership interest, the Curriculum Committee develops schedules throughout the year of non-credit programs and events to provide an opportunity to learn while meeting and making friends. You will find programs and events for the current term inside this booklet, along with other details of interest.

Greetings from the Chair….. Spring is coming! Hard to believe but it will be here before you know it. If you have been hibernating or traveling this winter, the days are getting longer and HOPEFULLY the sun will be shining each and every day. When looking at your spring calendars, make sure to pencil in many of the new NCLL events and activities planned by our creative curriculum committee members. Select programs that are of interest to you, whether it be an outdoor activity, informational presentation, or even one of our social events that create lasting memories and provide hours of meaningful conversation. I have said this before, broaden your horizons – attend a program that you would never, ever think was of interest to you. The key is to register/pay early, and to review the time/dates/places of each program. A note of thanks must be given to the Executive Board (Gail Frinkle, Darlene Arseneau, and Phyllis James), the Committee Chairpersons (Caroline Jordan, Phyllis James, Sandi Poindexter, and Judy Ashby) as well as all the committee/board members who have spent numerous hours diligently writing/rewriting, and just giving of their time to make NCLL the organization it is today. A special thank you goes to Gil Martin, Sharon Beach, Judy Ashby, Sally Olsen, Marie Watanen, and Paula McCormick for always being there when I need extra help for events or just finding out about the past NCLL history. Shannon Quayle (NCLL secretary) also, needs a big thank you for all the work that she does. Last but not least, I can’t thank enough - Sandi Poindexter for her diligent work on setting up and maintaining the NCLL website and Facebook sites plus a million more items she has assisted with in her tenure with NCLL. If you haven’t heard, she will be leaving the area sometime in the spring. When you see her, please thank her for her commitment to NCLL. Let the sunshine in to your lives this spring through participating in many

of the NCLL programs and events! Get involved by volunteering on one of our committees or just by becoming a member and attending our fabulous activities. We have several Board member openings this year, if interested let Gail Frinkle or myself know so we can put you on the Ballot.

Membership The $30 annual NCLL membership fee is applicable from July 1 through June 30. This fee supports the mission and operation of the organization. A new program booklet is published three times annually. New members are welcome at any time during the year. To become a member, use the enclosed registration form (also available on the NCLL website) and sign the waiver at the bottom of the form. Non-members are always welcome to participate in our programs and events.

Program Location and Car Pooling Some field trips and tours provide for carpooling at designated meeting places; riders are encouraged to contribute to the driver for gas. NMU Tuition is Waived!

Senior citizens, aged 62 or older, receive a tuition scholarship for all NMU on-campus classes and application fees are waived. You can take academic and/or exercise courses to earn a degree or simply for personal enrichment (non-degree seeking). Web courses are not eligible for this program and the tuition scholarship does not cover books or other fees. At 6 credit hours in a semester, the student activity fee is required. At full-time student status, the university fee is required. For current tuition and fees, see https://www.nmu.edu/bulletin/senior-citizen-scholarship. To apply, choose the correct office for your educational history and goals. Do not pay the application fee.

Miscellaneous Information • Presenter Illness or Inclement Weather – you will be notified if the

program or event is cancelled (or rescheduled).

• Cancellations or No-Shows - Consideration should be exercised when you have registered for an event and decide not to attend for whatever reason. Please call to cancel by the deadline date. This is very helpful to both the liaison and the presenter(s) to assure an accurate registration list. This allows people on the wait list an opportunity to attend the event.

• Complimentary Parking Permits - NMU provides free campus parking permits for seniors. Go to Campus Safety in the Services Building (227-2151) located on Sugar Loaf Avenue with the license plate number and model of your vehicle. Specify either for the term or the full school year.

• NMU Campus Map - a full campus map can be located on either the NCLL or NMU website http://www.nmu.edu/campusmap

• Seniors Age 62 or Over - Remember that there is free tuition for seniors who enroll in NMU classes and exercise programs. See more details about this listed in this booklet (page 5).

• NCLL Events - The Marquette Monthly, the Mining Journal, Marquette365.com, and the NCLL website contain the NCLL listings of activities. Facebook provides viewers with many photos of past events.

• If you would like to continue to support NCLL, make a donation to the NMU Foundation designating NCLL as the recipient.

• Many events at NMU are open to the public and are great learning opportunities. Check www.nmu.edu/calendar for a complete list of NMU happenings.

Education Not Advocacy Policy

As an educational rather than an advocacy group, NCLL will sponsor educational programs and events and seek to avoid any that advocate for a single viewpoint, particularly if the topic is both current and controversial.

Registration and Program/Event Details Registration deadline and fees ~ Guarantee your reservation in a program or event with pre-payment of fees with your registration. Registration deadlines and program size limits are listed with each description. If the event is full when you register, you will be notified and your name will be placed on a wait list. If space becomes available due to cancellations, people on the wait list will be notified by the liaison.

Priority reservations for each four-month term listed in the events booklet are given to NCLL members if they are registered by the 15th of the first month of the term. (We encourage membership for this benefit as programs/events often fill up quickly.) Cancellation notice ~ Prompt cancellation provides an opening for others who may be on a wait list. We appreciate your consideration.

Credit Issued for Prepaid Activities ~ When you prepay for a program/event and cancel on or before the registration deadline, or if the event is cancelled, you DO NOT lose your money. A credit voucher for your prepaid amount(s) will be sent to you via email with instructions for use within the next 12 months. Pre-payment is required when indicated in the program or event description.

5-minute wait time ~ If you are attending a program or event that specifies meeting at a parking area, the group will wait no more than five (5) minutes beyond the posted start time. In the case of inclement weather and the closure of NMU, please contact the liaison about possible cancellation. Waiver form (ON BACK OF REGISTRATION FORM) must be signed and on file in the NCLL office when registering for programs or events. Your form will be valid for the entire academic year. This policy informs and protects our participants as well as NMU and the NCLL.

The distinction focuses on education, research and patient care related to concussions. Maggy has contributed research to the ImPACT test, and helped to establish concussion awareness and services in Marquette. 312: 1868 Scientific Expedition to Lake Superior –

in 3D Date and Time: Wednesday, April 8 7-9 p.m. Location: NMU Superior Dome Room 101B Cost: $3 for members; $6 for non-members Presenter: Don Balmer, 3D photographer and Archivist All summer in 1868 students from the Michigan University (U of M today) toured Lake Superior including Marquette and the iron mines, the copper mines, the North shore of Lake Superior, Isle Royale and Pictured Rocks. Amazingly, one of the students was a stereo photographer so using these stereo views and a report written by another student we will follow along on their travels in 3D with glasses provided. 329: Future Tours The tour planning group is interested in finding out what travel/tour you would be interested in attending. Some of the trips for summer and fall that we are looking at are:

1. Traverse City trip with the addition/option of golfing for those who would not like to visit wineries, staying longer for a tour of the National Park, and/or shopping. (3-4 Day Trip)

2. Door County – visiting wineries, Washington Island, Lavender Farm, possible festival, learning about the cherries, possible cultural event, and/or shopping. (3 Day Trip)

3. Milwaukee – visit Harley Davidson Headquarters, tour Domes and other botanical gardens in the area, see the China garden event, possibly a play or tour a casino, attend a festival like Italian Fest, and/or shopping. (3-4 Day Trip)

4. Appleton Shopping Trip. (Day Trip)

5. Minneapolis Mall of America Trip. (3 Day Trip)

6. A Cruise to Alaska/Hawaii or a trip to Iceland.
