The Board CornerMeet The Board •Kevin Klevorn

One of the ways church leadership tries to help youconnect a face with a name for our board members isperiodic praying for the offering. Still, so many peo-ple visit both campus locations with (for now) threeseparate services that it is hard for many to knowenough about our current board members, so thismonth I’ll introduce you to about half of the churchboard, with the balance to follow next month.

The senior statesman in terms of longevity at Walloonis Myron Matz, who started attending in 1966 (you'llhave to ask him how old he was). He has been mar-ried to Kim for 25 years. They have two daughters,Emily, 13 and Samantha, 11. He teaches theFoundations class on Sundays. For work, he is in theconstruction business as a general contractor, and forplay loves to hike in Colorado with his family.Myron lives in the Chandler Hill area at the east endof Charlevoix County.

The senior statesman in terms of age is DougGabrielsen (again, up to you to find out, but a hint is"octo"). Doug and Sus have been married a reallylong time, and they are the parents of three grownchildren and a mess of grandchildren. He moved toBoyne City in the mid 1980's as a plant managertransplant from Honeywell, who was headquartered"back east." They regularly spend time with family inNew Jersey, and winter in Arizona. As an engineer bytrade he can fix most things, and has previouslyserved on Ron Hutchcrafts' Youth for Christ board, again "back east," as well as the local YFC board formany years. Doug and Sus can sing duets in bothEnglish and Norwegian.

Leland Hershey is one of the newer board membersand worships at the East Jordan campus. He is mar-ried to Treva, and they have two kids, Kaitlyn, 8 andAshton, 7. He is in the wood products business andlives south of Charlevoix. He has served with ourworship teams, and has helped out a lot with theneeds of the East Jordan launch.

Paul Theriault was born and raised in Sault SteMarie (U.S.A. side) and moved to Petoskey in 1967.Married to Debbie, they have one grown marrieddaughter and two grandsons. He chairs the facilitiescommittee at church and is also involved in the mar-riage class, prayer partners and small groups. Forwork you can find him at Bay Area Clean Care, andfor fun, boating, snowmobiling or spending time withhis family.

Lynn Groff and his wife Lucy live east of BoyneFalls. They are parents to Heidi, 22 and Brian, 24.Brian and his wife, Kim have blessed Lynn & Lucywith two young grandsons, Michael and Daniel. He isthe Minister of Maintenance at Walloon and Lucy isan OB nurse at NMH in Petoskey. Lynn keeps theWalloon campus looking sharp!

Jeff Bradford is married to Julie and they live inBoyne City. Jeff was born in Canada, but the accenthas mostly faded, unless he gets checked hard on theice during hockey matches. They have three grownchildren you will also see at the Walloon campus. Hehas a laundry and dry cleaning business, and lovesMichigan football. (Has the most up-to-date info onrecruits around....)

The last one this month will be Ed Bradley. Ed hasbeen married to Sheri for 32 years and they maketheir home in Horton Bay. They have five kids andfive grandchildren. Worship is not for the faint at heart. Think about it:worship means engaging the Creator of theUniverse. No one can truly come before God with-out being changed. And on a smaller scale, but justas intimidating to most of us, worship is often pub-lic. That can be frightening as well.

Imagine this scene. You're in a crowded auditori-um. The person speaking asks everyone to closetheir eyes. He is going to ask a question, pause foryou to determine your response, and then at a sig-nal, you are to hold up your hands indicating anumber from 1 to 10 with your fingers, still keep-ing your eyes shut.• How free would you like to be in your worship of God?• How free do you feel you usually are in your worship of God in front of others?• What is the numerical difference between thefirst number and the second?

Instead of telling you the kind of response given inthe room after the third question, the speakerinstructs you to keep that last number held up infront of you and that after one more moment toconsider, everyone will be given a signal to opentheir eyes to discover everyone's numbers.

What would your numbers be? Would you betempted to peek and maybe adjust your final tallyto better match the scores of those sitting nearby?

Most people will have a difference between thefirst two answers. Many things impact our abilityor willingness to express worship publicly. Sinissues, the struggle to open new areas of life to theLord, personal growth issues, mental or emotionaldistractions, physical considerations, culturalexpectations, known consequences.... There aremany reasons for fear.

The Bible is full of examples of people who riskedall by jumping forward into God's unknown.Sometimes the individuals followed through suc-cessfully, sometimes not. But the events thatensued usually exceeded anything they had everconsidered. Life changed.

When the angel told Mary that she was going togive birth to Jesus, her entire life was unalterablyredirected. Moses had failed at trying to protect theIsraelites from their Egyptian masters, yet God toldhim to return and do it correctly after 40 years ofhiding. Noah invested heavily in time, resources, and reputation to obey what seemed a crazy com-mand. Abraham, after already having left his home-land and the protection of living among relatives, was asked to sacrifice his own son. The list contin-ues, person after person, event after event through-out the Bible and the rest of history. Can you thinkof any significant spiritual movement of God thatdid not incorporate someone taking a tremendousrisk to follow the Lord's leading?

One of my favorites was when King Saul's sonJonathan turned to his armor bearer to ask if he'dbe willing to go on a suicide mission. The onlychance of success - much less surviving - was ifGod decided to intervene with a miracle. Thearmor bearer had not heard from God, andJonathan didn't say that it was something God hadtold them to do. Still, the unnamed servant agreed.God did intervene and used the event to deliver theentire nation from the enemy army.

Walloon Lake Community Church Newsletter

March 2012March 2012

Page 5Page 8 Walloon Lake Community Church Newsletter

We’ve done a lot of important stuff at EJCC lately…We’ve held meetings with staff, new members, andcommunity leaders. We’ve offered training togreeters, children’s ministry volunteers, and commun-ion servers. We’ve followed up with people who’veattended for the first time, shown interest in member-ship, and faced challenges in their personal. We’vefigured out how to reserve seats for guests, addedmore chairs, and struggled to delay the need to holdtwo services on Sundays. We’ve scheduled work days, installed equipment, and used volunteer labor toimprove and maintain our building.

We’ve also formed new community small groups, gathered for prayer meetings, and offered our childrenand teens solid, creative biblical teaching. We’ve chal-lenged people to read through the Bible, offered themtools to do it, and encouraged them to keep going. We’ve even preached about disputable matters, scape-goats, and unloading boulders. Important things, all...But what’s the MAIN thing?

The MAIN thing at EJCC, at WLCC, and from thebeginning to the end of Scripture… is Jesus. HisCross. The Good News: "For God so loved the worldthat He gave His one and only Son, that whoeverbelieves in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.Above all else, we proclaim God’s desire to makepeople who are dead in their sins ALIVE in Christ!

Making disciples is our mission, and this involves alot of work, planning and activity. It compels us tocome together in fellowship and in ministry. Itrequires a commitment to the teaching of the wholecounsel of God’s Word. Without God, and the work ofHis Spirit, it is also entirely impossible. This calls usto a life of holiness, a commitment to prayer, and awillingness to daily walk with our Lord. Still, whatev-er we do, and whatever we preach, our primary focusremains on pointing people to Jesus. Making disci-ples. And so every week, the gospel is proclaimed.Every week, people who need Jesus hear the messageof the Cross. Every week, we offer the opportunity forpeople to make the most important decision in theirlife: to accept Jesus as their personal Saviour. Praisebe to God that our church… His church, in both loca-tions… regularly bears the fruit of new disciplesbeing made as they meet Jesus for the first time at thefoot of the cross! May we never tire of the message ofthe Gospel, and may we always keep the Main Thingthe Main Thing!

When God shows up, things change. He knowswhat is necessary in order for us to become trans-formed. But transformation frightens us. What ifthe Lord asks me to give up something that reallymatters to me? What if I have to face that the per-sonal cost is more than I am willing to pay? Whatif obedience exposes me to ridicule or becomingcut off from significant people in my life whowon't understand or agree? What if it's embarrass-ing? What if it hurts?

A year after I was baptized at age seven, our pastorhelped walked me and my family through a diffi-cult time involving my leg. He was there for us asmy leg turned gangrenous and after trying every-thing else the doctors scheduled my amputationsurgery. The leg was just too far gone. My life wasat stake. And the pastor celebrated with us after thefinal pre-surgery examination when I was told 5incredible words, "Go home, it's a miracle." Butmy pastor's faith nearly collapsed when, severalyears later, his own daughter lost her leg to cancer. It's easy now to look back and realize how doorsopened for her to impact people all over the world, plus she skis, dives, dances, runs cross country, andis far more active than I am on two legs. But fol-lowing the Lord at that difficult time was anythingbut easy.

I often encourage my worship band members toseek the Lord while preparing to lead worship byasking Him what He would like them to do that ifHe does not intervene, they will fall flat. Whenthey take up the challenge, what follows mayaffects everyone in the congregation, or it may sim-ply lead to private, personal growth. But it's amaz-ing what happens when we willingly step off thecliff and into the deep with no safety net other thanthe Lord's call.

Throughout scripture, God assures us that He lovesus beyond anything we can conceive. His trackrecord supports that claim. We have the testimonyof millions of changed lives, including the timesHe has already held each of us in the palm of Hishand and transformed us. You'd think we wouldhave learned by now, but that's the nature of faith. It requires the unknown, the fear of being wrong,of being out of control.

He made you. He designed you to blossom intosomething far beyond anything you could dream upor bring to pass by yourself. He calls you toembrace the risk. Identify His voice. Trust Him.Step out and follow. In the end you'll be amazed atthe incredible plans of our God and King. Be dar-ing in your worship as you give your whole self tothe Lord!
