The “Unthinkable” Facts

ChildMinder® Safety Seat Monitoring Systems 2

In 2010 there were at least forty-nine deaths of children in the United States due to hyperthermia (heat stroke) from being in hot vehicles.

In the previous year (2009) there were a total of at least 33 such fatalities in the United States due to hyperthermia after they were left in hot cars, trucks, vans and SUV's.

Since 1998 there have been at least a total of 494 of these needless tragedies.

These incidents can occur on days with relatively mild (i.e., ~ 70oF) temperatures and that vehicles can reach life-threatening temperatures very rapidly.

The Facts “Heat Up”

ChildMinder® Safety Seat Monitoring Systems 4

The temperature inside a vehicle can rise about 19°F in 10 minutes.

Within 30 minutes, the temperature inside a vehicle can rise to 120°F when it's 85°F outside.

Children left unattended in hot cars account for 24% of fatalities.

Children's thermoregulatory systems are not as efficient as an adult's and their body temperatures warm at a rate 3 to 5 times faster than an adult’s.

Children that have died from vehicular hyperthermia in the United States (1998-2010) have ranged in age from 5 days to 14 years. More than half of the deaths are children under 2 years of age.

Distractions Lead to Disaster

The non primary parent is requested to take the child to daycare on the way to work, is focused on the work day ahead, and forgets child is in car.

Parent/caregiver is distracted by a phone call or another person, and leaves child who has fallen asleep in safety seat placed in back seat of automobile (by law).

Parent/caregiver decides to quickly run into the store for “a minute.”

Parent/caregiver unlocks door to house and rushes to answer ringing phone or is distracted by other children, forgetting baby in car safety seat.

Global Problem

The statistics provided only apply to reported deaths in the United States, but the problem is a global one.

Hyperthermia deaths of children left in cars have been reported in other regions of the world as well—including Canada, Europe, the Middle East, and the Caribbean.

The most conscientious and responsible parents/caregivers from all walks of life have found themselves in the “unthinkable” situation of leaving a child in the car due to changes in the normal routine of their busy lives.
