Welcome to KS4Dear student and parents,

The aim of this booklet is to help you plan your Key Stage 4 Pathway, which spans Years 10 and11. You have some important decisions to make about your future, so please take the time toread the course descriptions and requirements carefully, and discuss your thoughts with therelevant subject teachers.

This booklet sets out the compulsory subjects you must take, which include English Language,English Literature, Mathematics, Science, Core Physical Education and either History orGeography which you already started in Year 9. If you are in Sets 1 and 2 then Spanish is alsocompulsory. The booklet will also go onto explain the optional subjects you can choose from.

WHAT IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A CAREER IN MIND?

Most Year 9 pupils are undecided so don’t worry. It makes sense to keep an

open mind.

CAN I CHOOSE THE SAME SUBJECTS AS MY

FRIENDS?Friends often choose

subjects together, which is fine if you like the same things but remember you will study these subjects three or four times per

week for two years.

WHAT ABOUT NEW SUBJECTS?You will find that you have already studied many of the subjects during the first three years inschool. However, it is almost certain that there will be a number of subjects that are unfamiliar.

You will be involved in a vocational day to introduce you to the unfamiliar subjects but if you arestill unsure then make sure you go to the relevant teachers and find out more information. Youcan also use the information in this booklet to help you gain a better understanding.

Your teachers will also be involved in a series of assemblies to give you more detail on whicheach subject entails.

CHANGES IN SUBJECTS AFTER SEPTEMBER ARE ONLY ALLOWED IN VERY EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES.

WHO CAN HELP WITH YOUR CHOICE?

Your Parents – Are interested in your future and will offer valuableadvice. They know you best as a person

Subject Teachers – Know how good you are at a particular subject.

Form Tutor/Head of Year – They have an overall picture of yourprogress at school.

Careers Teachers – Have a great deal of careers information and cangive you guidance if you have a particular career in mind.

Relatives and Friends – May have made similar choices in the pastand may be able to point out the advantages and disadvantages ofcertain choices.

HOW WILL YOU MAKE YOUR CHOICE?The arrangements for your option choices are as follows:

1. Year 9 Progress and Pathways Evening: Monday 12th March 2018. This evening will giveyou the opportunity to discuss choices. Stalls will be set up with samples of work andstaffed by teachers which will allow you to see the type of work required and give you theopportunity to ask questions.

2. Completed forms to be returned to Miss Cropper by Friday 16TH March 2018.

CAN I CHANGE MY MIND?In most cases your course of study starts in September for two years. However carefully youchoose, there is always the possibility that a particular choice may turn out to be a mistake. Ifthis happens you may be allowed to change. Although, we do not want anyone to have theattitude that they do not need to bother or think carefully about the options or to believethey can chop and change their course if they feel like it.

Therefore, a change will only be allowed provided:

1. It is within the first two weeks of term.2. There is a valid educational reason.3. That there is a vacancy in the subject you wish to take.4. That is has the approval of the following:

HOW CAN PARENTS HELP?

Talk to your son or daughter about what he/ she would like to do. Read this booklet withthem so that you too are fully informed about the choices they can make.

The last two years of compulsory schooling is a time of great pressure on pupils. This iscoursework to complete, deadlines to meet, exams to take, jobs to find and furthereducation courses to enquire about. At the same time there are many social pressures foryoung people to deal with out of school. It is very important that pupils develop the meansto cope with these problems and decisions and still be happy and well motivated. A goodschool life can help to make all the other problems easier to work through and sort out.Please ensure your child attends school regularly and on time. Talk to them about thecourse they are following, check their homework planners and let us know if you have anyconcerns. We are very keen to avoid any problems which may prevent your children fromdoing their best. Therefore is it important to maintain good standards of dress, behaviourand attendance, falling standards will be dealt with quickly to prevent any major problems.

The last two years are important to all of our pupils – we wish them luck and look for yoursupport as parents, to help ensure a successful outcome for all pupils at Broadoak School.

PLEASE NOTE:

Some courses will be oversubscribed and staff will have to select on a child’s ability for thesubject, effort in the course during Year 9, attitude and behaviour.

Similarly some courses will be undersubscribed and will not run due to lack of numbers.Pupils who chose these subjects will need to select another subject choice.

This is a very exciting course, which allows students to develop not only their creative

thinking but challenge their making skills.

Design Technology helps students develop the ability to design and make products with

creativity and originality, using a range of materials and techniques. This course requires

students to develop their knowledge of materials and the use of new technologies used in

a variety of industries to create innovative, functional products in a 3 Dimensional way.

This course has 60 per cent controlled assessment in order to recognise the importance of

practical work within this subject. The remaining 40 per cent is based around an externally

assessed examination which takes place in Year 11.

Business Studies is where students develop knowledge and understanding of howorganisations in businesses operate. BTEC Digital Information Technology gives you the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. You will develop key skills in digital information technology such as project planning, designing and creating user interfaces (mobile apps), and creating dashboards to present and interpret data processes that underpin effective ways of working.

You will cover both coursework and exam studying theory such as project planning, the computational design process, cyber security, virtual workplaces and legal and ethical codes of conduct .

You will develop an understanding of what makes aneffective user interface and how to effectivelymanage a project. You will use this understanding toplan, design and create a user interface such as aMobile Phone App or a Website.

The course is broken down into four sections. There are two compulsory units which are concerned with using a Digital Audio Workstation (we use ProTools and Adobe

Audition). Unit 1 is about showing how the DAW is set up and used. Unit 2 is a practical use of the DAW where you create an original piece of music.

We then work on two further units which are chosen to suit the strengths of the group. These are all concerned with developing technical recording skills.
