The Microbiology Department in the School of Life Sciences of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana is
seeking applicants or nominations for the position of Head of the Department and Professor of Microbiology. The
Microbiology Department, which has a long record of excellence in microbiology research, consists of 20 faculty members
and 68 graduate students. Faculty members have strong, well funded research programs and represent a variety of
areas. Several openings exist for recruitment of new faculty members at all levels, and the University administration
has made a strong commitment to further development of molecular biology and biotechnology. Resources for research
include a Biotechnology Center which provides protein sequencing and nucleic acid synthesis, a Cell Sciences Center
which provides monoclonal antibodies and cell sorting, and the Center for Prokaryotic Genome Analysis. The University
also has an internationally known School of Chemical Sciences.
The Microbiology Department is responsible for providing courses in Microbiology for undergraduate and graduate
students in the School of Life Sciences and for providing instruction in medical microbiology for first and second year
medical students.
Candidates should have a Ph. D. degree in a relevant discipline, a record of outstanding achievement, well funded
research in microbiology, cell biology, or molecular biology, and the ability to work with scientists representing diverse

Postdoctoral Positions in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
Two positions available immediately to study the mechanism of action of specific deoxynucleotide metabolizing enzymes as well as the regulation of their genetic expression in eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Gene isolation and amplification of their protein products will be required. biomedical sciences through Combined Admissions Mode or CAM. This new program enables a small number of select
students to begin graduate study at Stanford University without first committing to a given department or program.
During the first year, following a series of “rotations” in different departments, CAM students select a thesis adviser

Students till learn the major techniques in protein pmitlcation by actuetly performing four separate isolations including: (i) a -eg&tory protein from muscle tissue; (ii) a fusion protein from 9. coli; (iii) a DNA binding protein from nuclei of tissue culture :ells; end (iv) a chemically synthesized peptide. A variety of hromatographic, electrophomtie, and bulk fractionation ;echniques will be employed including: ion exchange, gel iltration, hydrophobic interaction, affinity-based adsorption, md immunoaffiity chromatography; polyacrylamide gel and .wo-dimensional gel electrophoresis and electroblotting; precipitation by salt and pH; and HeLC analysis. Methods of protein characterization will be discussed including amino acid molysis, protein sequenctng, and mass spectrometry.
