Linear (PATNA FOREIGN TOURISTS)

Exponential (PATNA FOREIGN TOURISTS)

PATNA DOMESTIC TOURISTS Tourist arrival data for 2001 to 2012 was extrapolated to project tourist footfall in Patna up to 2023.Two scenarios are expected:1. Exponential rate of growth of tourists2. Linear rate of growth of touristsUnless some major boost is given to theTourism sector by public and privateAgencies, the likelihood of exponentialGrowth is negligible. Hence it would be safe toassume a linear growth trend for touristsTo Patna.

DATA ON TRAVEL/ STAY BEHAVIOR OF TOURISTS

Page 5: Patna tourism data

OBSERVATIONS:

•April month recorded the highest number of tourists staying overnight in the Patna region.

•While day tourists comprise of around 38% of total tourists, a large chunk( around 46 %) prefer to stay with their friends and relatives, rather than use the available accommodation units. The reasons for this can be diverse, such as:1. Personal preference2. Dissatisfaction with available accommodation unit in terms of quality,

service and hygiene3. Lack of affordability4. Poor accessibility from accommodation units to places of interest5. Safety and security concerns, specially for women and children6. Lack of awareness about available options7. Lack of packaged options which offer accommodation + meals + sight

seeing/ transfers to and from railway station/ airport.

•Patna region witnesses the highest day tourist footfall in the months of April, September and December.

•December and January months witness the highest number of visits by foreign tourists. This coincides with the holiday season throughout the world . Also the climate during these months is more conducive for tourism as compared to the summer months.

•Poor occupancy is recorded in the first and second quarter of the year

TOURIST PROFILE FOR BIHAROBSERVATIONS:•A majority of the visitors are in the younger age group 15-34 years.•Senior citizens and children comprise a very small percentage of the total visitors (0.4 % and 0.9% respectively).•The facilities and services offered at tourist destinations should be focused towards catering to the needs and choices of the focus group (15-34 yrs).•Enhancement in facilities required to instill confidence in senior citizens.

8

AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD INCOME OF TOURISTS(%)

OBSERVATIONS:The data shown here was recorded in 2005 and according to this data, most of the tourists lie in the low or lower middle income group. This may account for the low occupancy rates for accommodation units, as most of the people would find any kind of paid service unaffordable. They would prefer staying with friends and relatives. Further, tourism being a non obligatory or vital activity, people in the lower income groups will tend to spend lesser on this .It may be noted that the state of Bihar has seen rapid economic progress in the past decade. Hence income levels as well as purchasing power of people have also risen. The data above hence may not be a true representation of the current trends. A fresh survey is required to furnish this data and get a true picture of the current tourist profile.

9

COUNTRY/ STATE OF ORIGIN OF TOURISTS TO BIHAR

Page 10: Patna tourism data

10

OBSERVATIONS:

•An overwhelming majority of the domestic tourists are from Bihar itself. This indicates:1. Lack of awareness amongst tourists in the rest of the country about the

tourism potential of Bihar and Patna2. Lack of confidence/ safety & security concerns amongst the non Bihar origin

domestic tourists.3. Need to hard sell Bihar and Patna as a attractive tourism destination.

Examples set by states such as Kerala, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh can be followed.

4. Need for package options which combine sightseeing, religious tourism, recreation with convenient and affordable options.

5. The luxury tourism sector remains a completely untapped potential in the state. Low occupancy rates in star hotels, absence of luxury facilities and complete absence of resorts / spa destinations are a clear indicator of this lacuna.

• Most foreign tourists visit Bihar and Patna for religious tourism. The reasons for low

footfall from diverse nationalities for recreation/ luxury/ heritage tourism remains the

same as that for domestic tourists.

• Need to mark Bihar as a tourism destination on the world tourism map.

12

TRAVEL FREQUENCY OF TOURISTS TO BIHAR

OBSERVATIONS:•Bihar remains a destination which does not attracts repeat visits from tourists.

•Most of the repeat tourists come here for religious purpose.

•Need to carve out thematic tourism routes and trails which can widen the tourism offerings of the state.

•The facilities and infrastructure offered will play a big role in ensuring consistent patronage from tourists.
