The Obituary

Mr. Willie J. Cox was born in Wayne County, North Carolina on February 4,

1956 to the late James Cox and the late Mattie Mae Jones. He was raised by his

maternal grandparents, the late Ralph and Eva Mae Darden.

As a youth, he enjoyed participating in sports and dreamed of driving a “big

truck” one day. While at Four Oaks Jr. High, he played on the basketball and

football teams. He attended South Johnson High School, where he

demonstrated Trojan school spirit by playing running back for the football team

and forward for the basketball team.

His dream of driving a big truck was realized when he started driving for Atlas

Van Lines in the late 70s. He was extremely gifted in his skill and devoted over

30 years to driving.

In 1977, he welcomed the birth of his son, Wayne Earl Cox. In February 1996,

he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior. On March 1, 1996, he married

Gloria Jean. For many years, he served as a faithful deacon for the Original

Tabernacle of Prayer for All People in Goldsboro North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, a brother (Elmer Jones

Jr.), and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law (Charles and Vivian Best).

He leaves to cherish his precious memories: a loving and devoted wife, Gloria

Jean Cox of the home; a son, Wayne Earl (Ashley) Cox of Greenville NC; six

step-children, Latissa Thompson of Brooklyn NY, Taren Edwards of Goldsboro

NC, Demoreo Edwards of Goldsboro NC, Ronika (Jack) Jackson of Triangle

VA, Ronald Edwards of Goldsboro NC and Laronda Edwards of Goldsboro

NC; 14 grandchildren and 1 grandchild on the way; 2 great-grandchildren; 5

sisters, Lille Sanders of Raleigh NC; Lois Williams of Jacksonville FL, Janet

Williams of Goldsboro NC, Pamela Jones of Goldsboro NC, and Michele

(Ronald) Dorch of Dudley NC; one brother, Patrick Jones of Goldsboro NC; 7

aunts, Lovie Mae Sanders of Smithfield NC, Lucille Sykes of Goldsboro NC,

Elizabeth Jones of Atlanta GA, Beaulah Darden of Smithfield NC, Margaret

Elliott of Dudley NC, Myrtle Bryant of Princeton NC, and Pearline McDaniel

of Columbus Ohio, 5 uncles, Henry Lee Darden of Washington DC, Randolph

(Ala Gray) Darden of Goldsboro NC, Ralph (Mary) Darden of Maryland,

Edward (Sue) Darden of Selma NC; and George Wyatt Davis of Columbus

Ohio; 6 sister-in-laws, Helen Thompson, Minnie Thompson, Laura Thompson,

Bernita Fields, Patricia (Charles) Wilson, Teresa McKenon, and Kimberly Cole

all of Goldsboro NC, 2 brother-in-laws, James Thompson (Raleigh NC) and

Anthony Ruthley both of Goldsboro NC; and a host of nieces, nephews,

cousins, and other relatives and friends.
