Welcome to the Team

Thank you so much for signing up and being part of #TeamPrincesTrust. Palace to Palace is an amazing event and as a rider, you are right at the heart of it as we celebrate our 10th anniversary.

Since The Prince’s Trust was founded in 1976 by HRH The Prince of Wales, our mission has been to help disadvantaged young people to get their lives on track. Now into our 39th year, we remain dedicated to changing young lives. We support 13 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed, and those struggling at schooland at risk of exclusion. Many of the young people helped by The Trust are in or leaving the care system, facing issues such as homelessness or mental health problems, or they have been in trouble with the law. Our programmes give these vulnerable young people the practical and financial support needed to stabilise their lives, helping develop self-esteem and skills for work.

We have helped 825,000 young people. Yet, despite all of our work, there are still hundreds of thousands of young people in the United Kingdom who are not in work, education or training. With your support we are helping these young people to realise their potential and give them the chance they need to move forward with their lives. So thank you for getting involved. Thank you for fundraising. Thank you for changing young lives.

Inside this guide you’ll find lots of helpful information and hints and tips to help you fundraise and to make the most of your Palace to Palace experience. We hope you have a wonderful time. See you at the finish!

SAOIRSE GRAHAMBefore The Prince’s Trust, I was bullied really badly at school. It was so bad that it started to affect my family too so we decided to move from Ireland to England thinking that might help. If anything though, it got worse. I remember once waiting for the bus at school and the staff there could see what was happening. They called my mum to collect me because they worried something awful would happen to me if I went on the bus.We eventually moved back to Ireland but the bullying carried on there and when I stood up for myself, I got accused of violence. I felt like I was in a dark hole. I was desperate and honestly thought about ending things. Then I got referred to The Prince’s Trust xl programme and it changed everything. I was nervous and shy at first, but the staff and other young people made me feel at home. They didn’t make me feel stupid, they made me feel important. I never missed a day and I gained a Prince’s Trust qualification while I was on the course.I feel so much more positive now than I did before xl and I really want to become a mental health nurse. If there’s anyone out there who’s thinking about doing it, don’t think, just go ahead and do it. You never know what will come out of it.

About the start

So all your training has led to this! When you’re ready to set off just head towards the start funnels on the Mall (SW1A 2BJ) with your rider number clearly visible (don’t forget your safety pins!). Ride marshals will give you a detailed route map that fits into your pocket with an emergency number on just in case you need any assistance. Please add the emergency number to your mobile phone before you set off. Toilets are available in St James’s Park, and our marshals will be able to point you in the right direction. Just remember to allow yourself enough time so you’re ready to set off during your allocated start time slot.

Chip Tracking

Palace to Palace is not a race, however, due to popular demand, this year all Ultra and Classic riders will be chipped and everyone will be provided with a finish time. So you may want to set your own personal challenge, remembering the roads aren’t closed. Your tracking chip is within your handle bar rider number, so please ensure that this is attached to your handle bars with the number facing forward before entering the start funnel.

Underground

The nearest Underground stations that you can take your bike to are Westminster, St. James’s Park and Embankment which are all on the Circle and District lines and a short walk or cycle from the start. There are restrictions on taking bikes on the London Underground. More details, along with the first tube times can be found online. Please check tfl.gov.uk before you travel.

Driving

There is no parking at the start but there are two designated bicycle drop off areas on Horse Guards Road (SW1A 2HQ) and at Admiralty Arch (SW1A 2WH) at the top of The Mall (SW1A 2BJ).

Emergency contact details

Please ensure you have filled out your emergency contact details on the reverse of your bib before arriving at the start. If this is not completed before arrival it could delay your start time. It is mandatory to have these details completed on your bib.

Trains

The closest mainline stations to the start line are Charing Cross, Waterloo and Victoria. For all train times please visit nationalrail.co.uk. Each route provider has different rules about bikes onboard so it is worth checking before you set off.

Cycle Safety

Look after yourself

Î You must wear your official rider bib on the day and it must be visible at all times

Î Always wear a cycle helmet that fits and is securely fastened. Wear conspicuous clothing that is appropriate for cycling, i.e. nothing which may get caught on your chain or wheels, or that may affect your balance

Î BE SEEN - most accidents happen at junctions; wear high-visibility belts, fit lights and use them in poor visibility

Î All riders must be aged 16+ on the date of the ride and any rider with a medical condition, or who is unsure of their physical ability to take part, is advised to seek medical advice from a general practitioner prior to the event

Î Keep your bike roadworthy; check your brakes work, your chain is oiled and your tyres are in good condition

Î Whatever the weather conditions, your body’s fluid requirements will increase significantly whilst cycling. Loss of fluid, especially from sweating, will reduce your blood volume and mean that your heart will have to work harder. Replacing lost fluid is is essential to you completing the course. There are regular water stops on route

Î Cycling will increase your energy needs, so aim to eat little and often. Bring snacks with you so you have something to keep your energy levels up along the route

Î Alcohol and cycling are not a good mix and we strongly recommend you do not indulge along the route

Î Please don’t use head phones, you need to be able to listen to what is going on around you

ÎYou must adhere to The Highway Code at all times (gov.uk/highway-code)

10

Page 11: Palace to Palace Ride Guide 2015

Î Take care at all times. Don’t expect to cycle at high speeds. Please signal any intention to turn left or right and don’t stop suddenly, there may be cars or other cyclists directly behind you

Î Do not attempt any dangerous passing of other cyclists

Î Only overtake if it is safe to do so and use your bell to let people know you are coming through

Î Keep both hands on the handlebars (unless signalling) and both feet on the pedals

Î Be careful at junctions, bends and entrances

Î Never hold on to a moving vehicle or trailer

Î Please do not ask friends or family to drive along the course

Look after other road users

Î Remember it is not a race. Be a good advert for cycling and show consideration to others, whether cyclists, pedestrians, horse riders or drivers, and acknowledge those who give way to you

Î Ride in single file on narrow or busy roads. Never ride more than two abreast on open roads

Î Don’t cycle on pavements except where designated; pavements are for pedestrians

Î You must obey all traffic light signals and road signs; keep to your side of any dividing line on roads or cycle paths

Î Keep your distance from other cyclists at all times, as some may be less experienced

Î Be prepared to slow down or stop if necessary

The course has been carefully chosen by Limelight Sports Ltd, our event delivery partner, to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience. However, you are advised to adhere to our road safety guidelines and obtain personal accident insurance. You also need adequate cover for your bike and personal property to cover you for loss or damage, and loss or injury you may cause to a third party.

About the finish

Well done - you’ve done it! You’ll be cheered across the finish line at the Royal Windsor Racecourse and then receive your well-earned medal. Our End Village is the perfect location to meet up with friends and family who have come to congratulate you. Please make use of the Cycle Surgery bike park to drop off your bike and then make your way into the End Village where you will be given something to eat and drink and have plenty of time to relax! If you are riding with your company and want to meet up with your fellow team mates, please make use of the marquees at the End Village.

Trains

Trains from Windsor & Eton Riverside are operated by South West Trains and run into Waterloo via Staines. Trains from Windsor & Eton Central are operated by First Great Western, with Paddington services running from Slough. You will not be allowed to board a train with your bike from Windsor and Eton Central, you must cycle 4 miles to Slough station and pick up main line services from here. The number of bikes allowed on each train is subject to restrictions, so queues can be expected. We strongly recommend that you pre-book a space, or make alternative plans to be collected from the race course.

Driving

There will be car parking facilities at Royal Windsor Racecourse which will be open on Saturday 12th September from 2.00pm – 6.00pm and on Sunday 13th September from 5.00am. For directions please visit windsor-racecourse.co.uk. Please note the racecourse is situated on Maidenhead Road, if you enter the venue’s postcode, SL4 5JJ, into a Sat Nav it will take you to Mill Lane which is incorrect. The correct postcode is SL4 5HF.

What else is at the End Village?

The Palace to Palace End Village is a buzzing place and we welcome your family and friends to come along and support you. There will be a number of food and drink concessions available for your supporters to purchase refreshments.

They’ll be lots to do, with plenty of attractions suitable for all of the family.

Coaches

If you have booked onto one of our National Express Coaches the bus collection point will be located in the main car park of Windsor Racecourse. There is also a coach meeting point within the end village where our volunteers can direct you to the departure point. There is no need to print a ticket as your name will be checked against our records but please arrive early so that your bike can be bubble wrapped for safe transportation to your end destination.

Your Fundraising Makes a Life Changing Difference

We are so impressed with everyone who has already smashed their fundraising targets for Palace to Palace. It’s so important that every rider reaches their minimum fundraising pledge so that we can continue our life-changing work helping young people in the UK transform their lives.

If you’ve not quite reached your minimum fundraising target (£120 for the Classic route and £240 for the Ultra route) then don’t worry, there’s still time! Just follow these simple steps if you’ve not already:

1. Set up a JustGiving page for your Palace to Palace ride2. Send round the JustGiving URL to all of your friends, family and colleagues asking them to

sponsor you3. Add the URL to your Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn profile pages, and add it to your e mail

signature too4. Get creative with your fundraising – host a cake sale, a rounders tournament, a spin-a-thon,

or sell some old books or DVDs on eBay to raise more money5. If your sponsors are UK taxpayers encourage them to Gift Aid their donations, either online

or by filling in their full name, address and postcode on our sponsorship form and ticking the Gift Aid box. Every £1 you raise will become £1.25 through Gift Aid

Be sure to post any successes you’ve had with your fundraising on our Facebook group so that you can help inspire other Palace to Palace riders to raise as much money as possible to help even more young people.

Palace to Palace Classic minimum sponsorship commitment:

can help us give advice and guidance to at least 60

young people calling our telephone helpline.

can pay for six unemployed young people with bags of

JOEL FIELDSWhen I was growing up, I always felt like I was different. Life at home was really hard. I ended up going into care when I was six. I lived in a one bedroom flat with my mum and eight brothers and sisters, and the police decided it was an unfit place to live. It was really hard and I felt like I was nothing. Over the years I ended up with 15 different foster families and in four different care homes. I never felt settled anywhere so I found it hard to talk to people and fit in. I started misbehaving after that and getting in trouble with the police.Because of my home situation, I wasn’t going to school a lot so I didn’t feel like I had anything to write about myself when I was looking for work. I didn’t feel like there was a job out there for me.Things finally changed when my accommodation support worker referred me to Make your Mark, a four-week employability course run in partnership between The Prince’s Trust and Marks & Spencer. At the time I remember thinking to myself that it would be great experience, no matter what happened afterwards. I never expected to actually get offered a permanent job. I now work full-time at M&S and I’m responsible for the customer service department at a brand new store.I can’t thank The Prince’s Trust enough for helping me.

THANKS TO THE PRINCE’S TRUST I’M CONFIDENT, HAPPY AND IN A FULL-TIME JOB THAT I LOVE.
