Our six year old daughter, Mireille, attended the VBCA for the summer program. We researched a number of options for her and felt most comfortable with the ability of the VBCA staff to walk us through how to begin what was all a very new process to us. We were concerned about our daughter beginning first grade in a new school setting with some gaps in pragmatic social skills and we hoped spending the summer at the VBCA would be a good transition time to help prepare her for a successful school year in the fall.

Mireille does not typically feel safe in a new setting with new faces and new routines. However, from her very first day at the Center, Mireille was excited and happy and looking forward to returning the next morning. We saw progress and pride blossom in her that we had never seen before. She came home chatting about her new friends and told us stories about her activities that day. This was all so new and encouraging for us to hear from her! She clearly felt an instant connection with her peers at the VBCA and safety

with the adults.

The staff always greets us with a smile and shows us with their attitudes

that they see their work as more than a job, but as an investment in children. Sabrina is an expert in

helping us wade through questions related to logistics

like insurance, scheduling, and

timelines. I can always

count on a prompt reply

from the appropriate

staff member when I have a

question.

We are very excited to see how proud our daughter feels of her own accomplishments and how motivated she is to use her new skills in a variety of environments. We still have areas to continue working on and we know the Center will continue to be a valuable and reliable resource.

Not even sure where to begin except for WOW, THANK YOU Brain Balance. Our journey started when my son was in kindergarten and consistently coming home with notes from his teacher. At a loss we started a conversation with our pediatrician who indicated that he had ADHD symptoms but not enough to make a diagnosis. In first grade the behavior continued. In January we met with a therapist (to learn coping mechanisms) and psychiatrist (for prescription management) and received an ADHD diagnosis.

He began taking medication in January 2013 and we saw an improvement.

At this time we were questioning if medication was best for him as we had seen a change in his personality, he was very emotional, got angry very easily, had low self-esteem, would quit if he wasn’t winning and had lost a lot of weight because he was never hungry. I started researching our options and came across Brain Balance.

We started at Brain Balance not really knowing what to expect. Our biggest immediate change came when we had the food sensitivity test done and worked with the nutritionist. I cannot tell you what a difference this has made in the lives of our ENTIRE family.

My husband and I started doing extensive research ourselves on ADHD diagnosis and diet and decided that even when our elimination diet was over we were going to stay with many of the changes that we had adopted. Since we had maintained this diet for several months we decided to try and take my son off of medication and see what happened. Well, we are now medication free for 3 months and I am seeing my son’s true personality come out. He is happy, funny and not emotional anymore. He can focus on a task and accept mistakes without tears.

All of this is possible because we went through Brain Balance. I firmly believe it is because of Brain Balance that we are medication free. ~Jacque

School is back in session and the “honeymoon” period is over. You should have received some information from your child’s teacher regarding progress toward the goals you established in the last IEP. How are things going? Is your child making progress?

As you take time to communicate with your child’s school and teacher, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Many teachers are happy to respond to emails you send and are willing to send you a daily update. If this is the kind of communication that you want, ask your child’s teacher if this is possible.

In general, any classroom concerns should be referred to the classroom teacher who is providing instruction to your child. It is a good idea to make a note on a calendar if you find you need to contact the teacher regarding an issue. Most times the teacher is able to answer your questions and address your concerns.

If you have questions or concerns that are related to school policy or procedures, certainly make the classroom teacher the first point of contact, but be prepared to talk to the building and school system administration.

It makes sense that your first contact would be a simple phone call to express your question or concern. If you find that your initial contact is not enough to resolve your concern, you should be prepared to write a letter discussing the problem. The letter should be written to clearly define the problem you are having. Make sure to date the letter and keep a copy for your files.

If this does not resolve the issue, and the issue is related to the special education services your child is receiving, you may contact the Department of Education: Special Education Programs at www.doe.in.gov/specialed. The staff can help you solve problems and answer your questions.

As you look over your copy of the Procedural Safeguards that you were given by the school, you will see that there are three possible avenues you may use to resolve problems, if your initial attempts have been unsuccessful. You may request mediation. This would involve an assigned mediator who would work with you and the school to sort out the differences. You should contact your school’s Director of Special Education to begin this process.

If your concerns involve the implementation of your child’s IEP, you may want to file a complaint. Again, you can contact your school’s Director of Special Education to begin the process. The Indiana Department of Education will review the complaint and, based on their findings, will specify the corrective action that must be completed.

If the problem you are experiencing involves a violation of the state and federal laws covering special education services in the public school, you will be advised to request a Due Process Hearing. In situations that are taken to due process, the department of education will assign an officer to oversee the case. You might want to find an attorney who specializes in special education issues to work with you in presenting your case. The results of this hearing will be made public and can impact other special education programs in the state.

Of course it always best to try to solve problems with the school and teacher first, before proceeding to the options discussed. Most issues will be solved quickly and easily with your child’s teacher, but it is good to keep in mind these other options are available to you.

Lucas was a happy toddler who loved playing with trains, but at 2 years he struggled with communicating, eye contact and developmental milestones. Screams and crying were every day and what seemed constant. He wouldn’t respond to his name and limited words disappeared. Simple outings were unpredictable and he could not adapt to his environment. We never knew what to expect and the struggle left us all frustrated.

Reluctant to accept there were any issues and his development just needed more time, we took our pediatrician’s recommendation to seek out speech and occupational therapy. He began shortly after his 2nd birthday and by the next year there were some improvements but more was needed. These therapists helped us to see Lucas needed a specialist. The following spring Lucas was diagnosed with Autism. The doctor immediately recommended ABA Therapy.

Knowing his struggle with interaction and different environments, it was difficult to imagine sending Lucas to therapy for 8 hours a day 5 days a week. I wanted to believe everything he needed to develop could be provided by us but the realization soon came when he was still having difficulties.

Thankfully, we found ABC and immediately began to notice the changes! A routine started to emerge which included easier bedtime and less tired meltdowns. It was not long before the words started! I began to hear, “Bye, I love you Mom and Dad.” In those beginning weeks, drop off was the MOST difficult; it didn’t take long to realize he was at the best place possible. The changes in Lucas showed he was able to learn, play and have a good time. He loves to say his alphabet, count, and explore books on his own.

With the help of his therapists, Lucas has been able to form incredible bonds. Early on he struggled with eye contact and

talking to others. Now, he loves to introduce himself and meet new people. Outings are more predictable, easily handled and enjoyed! ABC has helped him learn

to communicate, build relationships and make “friends”. He is so affectionate and can’t help but give hugs to everyone most importantly his little sister. They

play cars, trains, dress up and house and love to make each other laugh.

The staff has taught us so many tips and tricks along the way. We have learned to handle difficult situations, redirect behavior and prepare Lucas for changes in his routine. Lucas potty trained easily and the communication was seamless, allowing us to follow the same steps at home. Transitions from different activities and environments are less stressful on him and easily managed by us. He is able to travel on field trips to the zoo, shopping for presents for his family at holidays and swimming at the new Carmel center therapy pool, one of his favorite activities. New experiences are an adventure instead of scary and over stimulating.

Lucas and our entire family are fortunate to receive the best care, attention and advice ABC has to offer. The therapists truly love and care about him and he has developed more than we could have hoped, growing every day. He continues to amaze us!

Do you have a child who absolutely refuses to comply

with your family rules? He or she chooses to do what works for him/her and it is as if your child doesn’t want to comply with the rules that you have created for your child’s well being. Now if your child has oppositional tendencies it could be fairly difficult to motivate your child because they’re so strong-willed. This can leave you feeling like a miserable failure because you believe that you are responsible for your child’s behavior. The healthiest thing you can do as a parent is to set up the structure for your child that will activate proper learning, household chores, and participation in family events. Your child’s temperament may interfere in this process. This invariably means that you set up consequences that seem to have no effect on your child. Regardless you still need to follow the course because that is your primary job as a parent.

I had a woman who came into the office totally frustrated with her son’s lack of motivation. She stated that nothing she could do would motivate her son. He spent hours playing his Xbox and when he went to bed he would sneak his tech toys into bed with him. In addition to his disrespect for her rules, he would sit for hours refusing to do homework. She said “this is not how I was raised and this is not how I have raised him!” She complained, “I’m so exasperated because I don’t know what I can do to get him motivated.” The truth of the matter is there was nothing that she could do to actually motivate this child. When I told her that he suffered from oppositional defiance disorder she began to realize that he had to figure it out on his own time. This meant she had to come up with consequences even if they appeared totally ineffective. I then explained that her job as a parent was to stay detached

from his behavior, and to set up consequences that promoted what he would deal with in the real world.

If you choose to be lazy…You won’t get very far in life.

If you choose to ignore your schoolwork…You may be held back.

If you choose to sneak your Xbox into your room… you will lose the privilege of using it.

If you choose to walk home from school instead of riding the bus…I will call school and enroll you in Saturday morning school because you consistently defy the rules.

This is not what mom wanted to hear because she wanted something to motivate her son but the truth of the matter is that many children are entitled and have to learn the hard way. The healthiest thing she could do was to learn how not to react to her son. Since her son was going to be very frustrating, she needed to conserve her precious energy and stay true to the course of parenting and find consequences to relate to the misbehavior. That was her job as a parent!

So if you have a difficult child, you need to detach with love and firmness. When you do this you’re better able to set appropriate consequences and you stay out of that normal and natural power struggle that can ensue when your child refuses to do it your way and chooses to do it his way. Just remember that you’re not a failure if you have a strong will child!
