What is nanotech?

Nanotechnology : Art and sience of manipulating

atoms and moleculs to create new systems, materials and devices.

Nanotechnology is the engineering of functional systems at the molecular scale.

Size Size mattersmatters

How big is nano? Nano = 100.000 x’s smallr than the diameter of human eye

Examples of Nanoscale: A cubic micron of water contains about 90 billions of atoms. 1 millimeter has 1000 micron Micron is a thousand times larger than nano

• NanotechnologyNanotechnology

• Nanotechnology is a group of emerging technologies in which the structure of matter is controlled at the nanometer scale, the scale of small numbers

of atoms, to produce novel materials and devices that have useful and unique properties.

General purpose technologyGeneral purpose technology

• Imagine a medical device that travels through the human body to seek out and destroy small clusters of cancerous cells before they can spread. Or a box no larger than a sugar cube that contains the entire contents of the Library of Congress. Or materials much lighter than steel that possess ten times as much strength. —

• Some important questions

• Who will own the technology? • Will it be heavily restricted, or widely

available? • What will it do to the gap between rich and

poor?

• How can dangerous weapons be controlled, and dangerous arms races be prevented?
