Leaving a Legacy to Further Your Charitable Intentions

Written by Volunteer Paula Ristuccia

“What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.”

- Pericles

While ancient Egyptians filled tombs with possessions to accompany them into the next life, modern Americans accept that you can’t take it with you. Whatever the size of one’s estate, a portion of what’s left in the end can advance the goals of a favorite charity.

Campaigns such as Leave a Legacy encourage people to consider how planned giving can make a difference. The organization (www.leavealegacy.org) provides information on the variety of bequests possible, hoping to “inspire people from all walks of life and all income levels to think beyond their lifespan when doing good works.”

Estate planning offers many options. One can designate in their will either a specific amount or a percentage of one’s assets. Gifting stocks is an alternative to cash donations, as well as transferring all or part of an IRA. Property owners can make provisions of real estate. A residual clause can direct the “rest,” or what remains, after the conditions of the will have been met and taxes and fees have been settled.

Additionally, life insurance policies can be written to name a non-profit group as the beneficiary.

Some of the methods listed above offer significant tax benefits. An attorney or financial planner can assist in detailing a plan.

On occasion generous donors have honored Mt. Pleasant by remembering the shelter in their wills. Large outdoor exercise pens were made possible from such a bequest.

The dogs who enjoy fresh air and extra room to run directly benefit from this lasting gift.

When it comes time to map out the distribution of what you own, Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter invites you to consider how you can make a permanent impact and further the efforts of this lifesaving cause.

happy tails An Evening of TributeEach year, Mt. Pleasant takes an evening to remember and honor the impact pets have on our lives. At the Tribute Ceremony, we light a candle for the pets of the past, the present, and all those we will save in the future. Unfortunately, due to weather, we were unable to do the lighting ceremony as planned this past December. With our staff, we lit the candles and read a short poem and now we wish to share those pets with you. Below you will find a list of pets honored and remembered.

Letter From the Director

Dear Friends of Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter,

Countless puppies and kittens will open their eyes for the first time this spring. They are beautiful, irresistible, and yet often born into adversity. With your loyal support, Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter rescues animals who are destined for euthanasia elsewhere due to overcrowding.

There simply aren’t enough homes to care for all of the animals that exist today. The more puppies and kittens that are born, the more that suffer. Unless we do something, the problem will grow exponentially worse.

You make solutions possible and for that, I am tremendously grateful. You help us save innocent lives.

There are several things you can do to save lives this spring:

• Become a monthly donor. Just $15 per month will make a huge impact.• Make a donation in honor or memory of a friend or loved one.• Sponsor a pet who is waiting to be adopted. • Include Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter in your estate plans.

You can also choose to become a foster parent to animals who aren’t quite ready for adoption. Our foster parents expand our capacity to save lives by taking in animals who are sick, injured or who don’t do well in the shelter environment. MPAS provides food, medicine, regular vet checks and guidance. Our foster parents provide the TLC that only a quiet, loving home environment can offer. If you are interested in opening your home and your heart to foster animals, please email [email protected] for information

Thank you for your support and desire to help animals. We certainly can’t do it without you!

With gratitude,

Thank You Volunteers From the bottom of our furry little hearts, a huge “THANK YOU” goes out to our fantastic volunteers! In 2013, Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter participated in over 75 outreach events. It is so important to get our animals out in the community to not only allow them the luxury of having a day out on the town, but also to help spread humane education and the importance of adoption.

The first few weeks of 2014 also boasted some fantastic adoptions, including volunteer favorite Lilly. Lilly had been at our shelter for quite some time hoping to find her forever home. She quickly gained popularity among our volunteers and staff members, and when Lilly’s big day came, she had her own adoption party! Volunteers and staff came to the shelter to wish our beautiful Lilly good luck in her new home. A true testament to our volunteers’ dedication, Lilly was sent off with a party including balloons, a cake, and of course her favorite– Dunkin’ Donuts! We know Lilly’s adoption was a group effort, but one volunteer in particular really went above and beyond to help Lilly find her forever home. Anne L., a longtime volunteer at Mt. Pleasant, filled the time between Lilly arriving at our shelter and Lilly’s forever home. Each weekend Lilly would anxiously wait for Anne to arrive, knowing her Saturday and Sunday mornings would be filled with lounging at Anne’s house, playing in the yard, and most importantly, her weekly plain donut treat. Anne worked tirelessly to make sure Lilly felt loved, appreciated, and calm during her stay here at Mt. Pleasant, and we thank Anne for all of her hard work.

For those interested in helping animals in need, there are so many ways for volunteers to donate their time to Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter. Sometimes, the best way to help our animals is by talking about our shelter and the importance of adoption. Volunteers James A. and Tracie K. helped students in the community learn the importance of adoption by taking part in a full day of workshops to promote adoption, spay/neuter, fostering, and volunteer work. As a shelter, Mt. Pleasant is committed to promoting humane education, and our volunteers did an excellent job of representing our shelter and inspiring a new generation of animal adopters.

Thank you to all of our volunteers for their hard work. If you are interested in volunteering at Mt. Pleasant, we can always use your help! For volunteers ages 10-15, we can use help with donation drives and fundraisers. Volunteers ages 16 and up can assist with in-shelter cleaning and events, and volunteers ages 18 and up may assist with dog walking, cat socializing, and fundraisers. For more information, please email Rebecca at [email protected].

Letter From the President

Dear Friends of Mt. Pleasant,

All of us living in the northeast are really glad to see the signs of spring appear and beautiful warm days return. The frigid winter weather kept our staff working extra hard keeping the facilities and the animals clean and warm. Be sure to stop in to see our newly re-painted kennel. It is bright and cheery for our dogs and puppies who await a furrever home.

Spring reminds us it is kitten season. Please check out our wish list. We need lots of supplies for our new babies. Remember, too, that our adult cats make wonderful family members and companions.

We are so glad so many of you are notifying us that Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter has been included in your Will. Our Will includes the shelter and provides care instructions for the shelter for our MPAS adopted dog Jax. Your donations and planned giving gifts enable us to continue to rescue at risk cats and dogs and prepare them for adoption into loving homes. We welcome the opportunity to discuss giving possibilities with you. Please call to set up an appointment with Suzanne Roman, our Executive Director.

I look forward to seeing you soon at our upcoming events or at the shelter.

Meows and woofs from Jax’s grateful friends at Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter.

Kelly LustigPresident, Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter Board of Directors
