INTRODUCTION

The 7th MPSJ Subang Scrabble Challenge 2015 was jointly organized by the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) - Kompleks 3C Management and Subang Jaya Community Sports Club (SJCSC) in association with the Malaysian Scrabble Association (MSA). This year’s edition was held in Kompleks 3C MPSJ and it attracted the largest number of participants with a total of one hundred and forty two (142) players, making this local event one of the biggest gatherings of the Scrabble players in Malaysia for this year. The competition was divided into three divisions to cater for the different levels of scrabble players. The Open division was for the more seasoned and competitive scrabble players, some of them have played in previous World Scrabble Championships. The Intermediate division was mainly for the school children who have been playing competitive Scrabble for the school and also adult players while the Beginners division was for those who are starting to play competitive scrabble.

The Tournament was nationally rated by MSA and the ratings are published in MSA’s website www.penster.com.

Open Division Participants

OPEN DIVISION A total of eighteen (18) players took part in the Open division playing fifteen (15) rounds of scrabble. This division featured many top-rated Scrabble players in Malaysia such as Vannitha, other previous winners of this tournament and players from Singapore. After fifteen rounds of intense scrabble matches, Goutham Jayaraman and Michael Tang managed to finish with 11 wins each. Goutham was declared Champion due to his superior spread points while Michael was 1st Runners up. Vannitha with 10 wins was 2nd Runners up. The top six (6) prize winners were completed by Tan Jin Chor (9 points with 292 spread), Khoo Beng Way (9 points with 242 spread), William Kang (9 points with 45 spread) in that order. The Champion received a trophy and cash prize of RM 500 while the runners up received trophies and RM 250 and RM 150 respectively. Additional cash awards were given to the fourth to sixth placed finishers. The high word award was presented to William Kang who played “ESTRANGE” for 113 points. Appreciation awards were given to Sheshi Ramanathan and Jocelyn Lor.

Intermediate Division

In the Intermediate division, there were thirty-six (36) players playing twelve (12) rounds of scrabble on 8th and 9th August 2015. Adam Azlan emerged Champion winning 11 games with spread of 661 points. The runners up positions went to Mohd Syazwan Aidid and Jerry Jang with 8 wins respectively and their positions were decided by spread points. The Champion received a trophy and cash prize of RM 250 while the runners up received trophies and RM 150 and RM 100 respectively. Additional prizes were given to the fourth to twelfth placed finishers. Certificate of participation was given to student participants. High word award went to Keeran Bathmanaban played “REELINGS” for 127 points.

Mr. Nigel Richards, Scrabble French World Champion, presented prizes and trophies to the winners for the Beginners Division.

Beginners Division In the Beginners Division, eighty-eight (88) players registered on the 9th August 2015 to play five (5) rounds of enthusiastic and competitive scrabble. Lim Yern Fay and Muhammad Aliff Haiqi managed to win 5 games each. Lim Yern Fay was declared Champion with better spread points while Muhammad Aliff was 1st Runners Up. The top six (6) positions were completed by Yalleni Gunenthiran, Adib Mukhriz, Said Ramadan and Muhd Haziq Hakimi in that order, all of whom obtained 4 wins.

The top twelve winners were presented with prizes while the top three finishers were also given trophies. There were also additional fifteen consolation prizes for the primary school children. Certificate of participation was given to all student participants. High word award went to Zabir for 92 points word “CHEATING”. Beginners Division Participants
