Formerly a small public sailing school, it wasgenerally paid scant attention. Built in the 80sand with little renovation done since then, itdidn´t really fit in with the rest of glamorousPuerto Portals and the crowd on the Portalsbeach right next to it.

As the story goes, one afternoon, twoDanish businessman and long time residents inthe Portals area, Morten Sondergaard andSoren Holst Thomsen were walking along thePortals beach when they came up with theirvision of how to create a new sailing centre.They then presented their VelaPortals project tothe local authority in Calvia, who had alreadydecided to offer the management of the schoolfor public tender.

That afternoon walk on the beach and thesight of the run-down sailing school was thefirst stage in dreaming up a modern and dar-ing project. After their bid was selected as thewinning project, they teamed up with Chileanarchitect Mathias Klotz, whose contemporarydesigns have won him many awards, fromRome to Miami, and much acclaim worldwide.Mathias Klotz has contributed a design forVela Portals that is both elegant and contempo-rary - a revived modern style, the like of whichhas not been seen in Mallorca before. Onemain attraction will be a large terrace over-looking the beach, where a new cantina willopen to the guests of VelaPortals for majorevents.

As international as the team that designed itis the concept of the project itself. The vision isa cross-cultural mix of members who share alove of sailing and spending time on the water.The Vela Portals team will be multilingual, andthere will be a strong emphasis on children,but all age groups including adults will be ableto sign up for a big variety of activities thattakes in big boat classes and racing.

This spring, in collaboration with schools onMallorca, sailing classes were available aspart of the school programme; a fantasticopportunity for children to decide whether thisis the sport for them. Along with others, theBaleares International School participated andmet with a huge response.

Full membership of the VelaPortals SailingCentre will enable the members to use the

boats, the new cantina and the new installa-tions on a full-year basis, leaving behind thehassle of maintaining your own boat and pay-ing mooring fees. Both individual and family

Ocurrió que una tarde, dos hombres de negocios danesesque llevaban ya mucho tiempo viviendo en la zona dePortals, Morten Sondergaard y Soren Holst Thomsen, sehallaban paseando por la playa de Portals cuando depronto tuvieron clara su idea para crear un nuevo centro

de navegación. Acudieron entonces a presentar el proyecto Vela Portalsal ayuntamiento de Calviá, que ya había decidido sacar a concursopúblico la administración de la escuela.

Aquel paseo vespertino por la playa y la visión del declive de laescuela de vela fue la primera etapa para materializar el sueño de unproyecto moderno y audaz. Una vez que su propuesta fue selecciona-da como el proyecto ganador, formaron equipo con el arquitecto chile-no Mathias Klotz, cuyos diseños contemporáneos le han valido numero-sos premios de Roma a Miami y aplausos por todo el mundo. MathiasKlotz ha proporcionado a Vela Portals un diseño elegante y contempo-ráneo a un tiempo - un renacido estilo moderno como no se ha vistoantes en Mallorca. Una de las atracciones principales será una granterraza dominando la playa con una nueva cantina que se abrirá paralos invitados de VelaPortals en los acontecimientos importantes.

El propio concepto del proyecto es tan internacional como el equipo

que lo ha diseñado. La idea es una mezcla intercultural de miembrosunidos por al amor a la navegación a vela y el mar. El equipo de VelaPortals será multilingüe y se pondrá un especial énfasis en los niños,aunque grupos de todas las edades -incluyendo adultos- podrán apun-tarse a una amplia variedad de actividades que incluye clases de gran-des embarcaciones y regatas.

Esta primavera, gracias a la colaboración con algunos colegiosmallorquines, las clases de vela formaban parte del programa escolar;una fantástica oportunidad para que los niños puedan decidir si es eldeporte adecuado para ellos. Entre otras participó la BalearesInternational School, en la que tuvo gran acogida.

La admisión de pleno derecho en el Centro de Navegación VelaPortals, de carácter anual, permitirá a sus miembros el uso de lasembarcaciones, la nueva cantina y las nuevas instalaciones, con lo quese evitan las complicaciones de mantener una embarcación propia ypagar las cuotas de amarre.
