ETERNUS DX

1 Monitoring ETERNUS DX systems with ServerView Operations Manager

Fujitsu's entry level and high-end level disk storage systems ETERNUS DX represent a new generation in disk storage that sets enhanced standards in reliability and innovation. ETERNUS DX provide a high degree of data storage reliability. All the main components are redundant and hot-pluggable (power supply units, disk drives, RAID controllers).

All relevant RAID levels are available

All the relevant RAID levels (0, 1, 5, 1+0, 5+0, 6) are available so you can protect your data in a flexible manner with regard to speed and security. Furthermore, the RAID migration feature can be used to dynamically move data between different RAID groups and disk drives without interrupting operations. You can move data to high-performance or large capacity disk drives according to access frequency and importance.

Data on disk drives is also protected by Data Block Guard technology

ETERNUS DX not only protect data on disk drives with RAID but also by Data Block Guard. Data Block Guard adds a small 8-byte check code per 512 bytes. This helps ensure that data integrity is always maintained on the disks and in the cache. Should data corruption occur, ETERNUS DX can automatically correct the situation using the stored "Data Block Guard" information.

Equipped with state-of-the-art capacitor technology

ETERNUS DX are also equipped with state-of-the-art capacitor technology. Instead of traditional batteries they use capacitors to write the content of the RAID controller cache to flash memory, in case of a power failure. The length of the power failures is also no longer a threat. The power generated by the capacitor is enough for safe cache data backup and the flash memory can hold the information indefinitely. When the power supply is available again, cache is very quickly restored as capacitors can recharge a lot faster than batteries. Capacitors also need less maintenance and have a longer lifespan than the batteries frequently used in other systems.

Support of disk drives

ETERNUS DX support SAS, Nearline SAS and SSD disk drives to provide you with more data management options.

Nearline SAS disk drives are comparable with SATA disk drives but have the typical Enterprise SAS interface. Their capacity levels are very high and they are very low-priced. This means you can use them to store the large data volumes of your non-critical applications.

SAS disk drives on the other hand are very reliable and fast. They are ideal for storing the most important, business-critical data.

SSD disk drives have no moving parts. They produce no noise and have a very short data access time.

1.1 Preparing for ETERNUS DX monitoring

To be able to monitor ETERNUS DX systems using the ServerView Operations Manager, a number of measures need to be implemented on the management server and on the individual ETERNUS DX systems.

This section provides information on the following topics:

– Software requirements on the management server and the ETERNUS DX system.

– Installing the software on the management server and the ETERNUS DX system.

– Activities after installation.

1.1.1 Software requirements

The following software requirements apply for monitoring ETERNUS DX systems with the Operations Manager.

1.1.1.1 Software required on the management server (Windows)

– The Windows SNMP services must be installed and configured.

– Sun Java Runtime Environment JRE.

– Please use ServerView Operations Manager and ServerView Storage Manager (StorMan) in a permitted combination of versions.

1.1.1.2 Software required on the ETERNUS DX system

The SNMP service must have been set up for the storage processor.

You can set the SNMP parameters either at the Web interface or via CLI on the Management Controller.

I The ETERNUS DX S3 firmware version must be V10L20 or later if SMI-S function is used.

1.1.2 Installing the software

Proceed as follows:

1. Install the Sun Java Runtime Environment on your management server.

You will find the software on the PRIMERGY ServerView Suite DVD or you can download it at:

2. Install the ServerView Operations Manager on your management server.

3. Install ServerView Storage Manager (StorMan) on your management server.

You will find the software on the PRIMERGY ServerView Suite DVD or you can download it at:

4. Check the Release Notice to see what combinations of versions are supported for the ServerView Operations Manager and ServerView Storage Manager (StorMan).

5. Use the following commands to check the version and status of the Storage Manager (StorMan) installation on your management server:

C:\Program Files\Fujitsu\StorMan\bin>storinfo and C:\Program Files\Fujitsu\StorMan\bin>storcheck

Accessing the SMI-S Provider

To access the SMI-S provider by Storage Manager (StorMan), you first have to enable the SMI-S Provider via the ETERNUS DX GUI.

You can query the status of the SMI-S Provider using the GUI of your ETERNUS DX system.

1.1.3 Adding a valid User ID to the User/Password list of ServerView Operations Manger

The ETERNUS DX SMI-S functions require a valid user/password combination, which is used for configuring the ETERNUS DX storage subsystems in the Storage Manager (StorMan) database. This combination must be stored in the user/password list of the ServerView Operations Manager in order to authen-ticate itself when retrieving information or performing actions on an ETERNUS DX storage subsystem such as adding the ETERNUS DX storage subsystem to the Operation Manager server list. For details, please refer to the „ServerView Operations Manager“ manual.

1.1.4 Activities after installation

After you have successfully installed the software, proceed as follows:

1. Refer to the README file for ServerView Storage Manager (StorMan) for information on any last-minute changes.

2. Ensure that the StorMan service has been started.

I The SMI-S provider is integrated in the storage processor (RAID controller) of the ETERNUS DX system. This means that you do not have to install the SMI-S Provider separately.

I When changing SMI-S settings, power Off/On is necessary.

1.2 Monitoring ETERNUS DX systems with ServerView Operations Manager

With ETERNUS DX systems, the ServerView Storage Manager (StorMan) software provides the necessary information to the ServerView Operations Manager to allow the information to be displayed in ServerView. A special storage subsystem icon indicates ETERNUS DX systems in the server list.

1.2.1 Integrating ETERNUS DX in ServerView alarm management

In order to allow SNMP traps from the ETERNUS DX system to be passed to the Operations Manager, you must configure the Event Monitor.

I The SMI-S Provider integrated in ETERNUS DX is automatically regis-tered in the StorMan database by the ServerView Operations Manager as soon as the Operations Manager has detected the ETERNUS DX system.

I You can specify what events are forwarded by specifying the error severity/error category. It is even possible to select individual events.

1.2.2 Showing ETERNUS DX systems in the Operations Manager server list

This completes all preparations for monitoring ETERNUS DX systems using the ServerView Operations Manager.

To add a ETERNUS DX system to the server list, add the master storage processor (RAID controller) for this system to the server list:

1. Open the Server Browser window in the Operations Manager.

2. Add the storage processor (RAID controller) to the server list:

a) Enter the IP address of the storage processor (RAID controller) in the Server Address tab.

b) Click the Search button.

c) Leave the remaining default settings unchanged.

d) Confirm your entries by clicking Apply.

The ETERNUS DX system is then shown in the server list:

1.2.3 Showing detailed information on the ETERNUS DX system

You query information on a ETERNUS DX system by clicking the ETERNUS DX system you require in the ServerList window. This opens the SV - Storage window, where you can view Status Overview.

I Note that when ETERNUS DX systems are displayed in the ServerView Operations Manager, vendor-independent terminology is used.
