MINUTES OF THE BILATERAL MEETING
FRIM-FORDA
Kuala Lumpur, 5'h April2007
INTRODUCTION
The meeting was chaired by FRIM Director General, Dato' Dr. Abd. Razak Mohd. Aii
and attended by the delegation from the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM)
delegation and the Forest Research and Development Agency (FORDA), Indonesia at
2.00 pffi, 5th April 2001 at Johore Meeting Room, Shangrt-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. The
delegation from FORDA was led by Mr. Wahjudi Wardojo, Director General of FORDA
and other members of delegation include Mr. Tajudin Edy Komar, Ms. Tri Wahyudiyati,Dr. Nur Masripatin, Mr. Anthonius Widyatmoko and Mr. Anwar Purwoto. The lists of
the participants are as shown rn Annex l.
The signing of MOU was held in the morning at the same place prior to the meeting in
the afternoon. The meeting started with the following presentation by FRIM and
FORDA:

ii. FORDAPresentation on general profile of FORDA by Dr. Nur Masripatin, theSecretary of FORDA. Refer to Annex 2.2
1. Welcoming Remarks
1 .1 Director General of FRIM started the meeting by welcoming all participantsfrom both parties. He emphasized the importance of strengthening thecooperation between FRIM and F ORDA in conducting relevant forestryresearch that will be of beneficial to both countries. Therefore the meetingtoday marked the official launching of the cooperation between the tworesearch agencies and expressed his desire that researchers from both partieswill explore ideas for possible cooperation between FRIM and FORDA in theimmediate future.

3.1 No matter arising was brought up during the meeting from the previousminutes of the meeting.
4. Planning collaborative research activities mentioned in Scope of Collaborationof MOU
With regard to the draft of the ITTO proposal (Ramin and Merbau), it wassuggested that the proposal to be finalized and submitted at the end of April2007 . FRIM will take the lead to compile and submit the proposal to theMinistry of Plantation Industries and Commodity as a focal point to ITTOproposal. FORDA will provide more information on the genetic aspect andissue a Letter of Support to the project proposal. A cover letter to ITTOshould mention that the proposal is a join effort by both agencies (FORDA &FRrM).
5. Future collaboration between FRIM and FORDA
Research on carbon has been identified as one possible area where bothagencies work together closely in the future. FORDA suggested thatinformation related to carbon issues should be shared between the twocountries. In this regard, Malaysia was invited to the carbon meetingscheduled to be held at the end of the vear in Bali.
FORDA expressed the interest to learn more on the preparation of integratedmanagement plan of peat swamp forest in Malaysia by the LINDP/GEFproject at Pekan, Pahang. The meeting noted that FORDA is welcome to visitthe site and they can write officially to the LINDP/GEF project for thepermission and arrangement to visit the project site at Pekan, Pahang.
The meeting agreed to work on the following areas of collaboration (Table 1).A task force was formed to oversee the implementation and coordination ofcollaborative projects, Dr. Shamsudin Ibrahim and Dr. Nur Masripatin havebeen appointed as the contact person to coordinate the implementation ofcollaborative projects that were agreed at the meeting.

6. Closing remarks
The Director General of FRIM thanked all members for contributing ideas andsuggestions at the meeting and wished to see good progress being made in theimplementation of identified collaborative research areas in the two research agencies inthe near future.

I.2 FORDA
L2.1 Dr. Nur Masripatin, the Secretary of FORDA, presented the general profile ofF ORDA covering its organization, human resources, programmes, scope ofresearch, research organization and cooperation and some potential use ofresearch result. Potentially research result were as follows:-
i. Shoot cutting using KOFFCO systemii. Optimalrzatton of shoot cutting in producing teak seedling for community
based forest developmentiii. Innoculation of mychorrtzal fungiiv. Sericultural technique for improving quality and productivity of kokonv. A bee cultural techniquevi. For improvement productivity and quality of honeyvii. Conservation technique and bird breedingviii. Breeding of the deers of timor (cervus timorensis)ix. I.2.3 In response to both presentations, several point taken from the floor are asfollows:-i. It has known that a source of timber is the pressing issue in Malaysia
where the resources is not suffisient. However, collaboration betweenMalaysia and Indonesia on this issue should make it sufficient forconsumption. In regards with this, proper analysis model should be thestarting point to overcome this issue.
ii. We should start working with the minimum unit of managementiii. FORDA is trying to inoculating fungi for different species of Gaharu
because it will give different impact.iv. Study for detecting Gaharu from the forest by using hyper spectral need to
be initiated.v. Combine effort between FRIM and FORDA is needed to strensth the
analysis for better future.vi. Management of watershed is going to be the direction in the future.
