Durante el 2008, debido a la profundización de la crisis internacional y su impactosobre la demanda mundial de materias primas, las cotizaciones de los principalesmetales básicos se vienen corrigiendo a la baja desde julio de 2008, registrando caí-das históricas que no se veían en décadas, así tenemos que las cotizaciones de losmetales cayeron en los últimos doce meses: PLOMO -56.6%, COBRE -54.2%, ZINC -47.4%, PLATA -31.8%, ESTAÑO -30.3% y el Oro -5.5%; la cotización del oro en uncontexto de mayor aversión al riesgo y de incertidumbre, mantiene su atractivo deultimo refugio, lo que ha permitido el sostenimiento de su precio.

Comparado con diciembre de 2007 el precio del cobre ha caído durante el 2008 alre-dedor del 35%; la disminución de precios desde inicios de julio obedeció a las expec-tativas de menor demanda mundial, en particular de los sectores automotor y construc-ción de los Estados Unidos, Europa y Japón, y al aumento de los inventarios en lasbolsas de metales. En el horizonte de proyección, el precio promedio del cobre seubicaría entre US$2,40 y US$ 2,60 por Libra.

La plata alcanzó en promedio el 2008 los 14.98 US$ /oz., llegando a cotizar unmáximo de 19.50 US$/oz. en marzo, y un mínimo de 9.86 US$ /oz.

La inversión en minería alcanzó en el 2008, según cifras preliminares estimadas por elMEM, la cifra de US$ 1,704 millones, lo que significa 7.57% más que el año anterior quefue de US$ 1,542 millones; estas inversiones incluyen la puesta en marcha del proyectoCerro Corona con una inversión total de US$ 550 millones, proyectando producir 140,000onzas de oro anuales y 25,000 TM de cobre a lo largo de la vida de la mina.

Asimismo Minera IRL SAC puso en marcha su proyecto de oro Corihuarmi en Yauyosalcanzando una producción de 1,568,135 gramos finos.

Además se culminaron ampliaciones y modernizaciones como el nuevo circuito decanchado de Antamina, que incrementó en 10% su capacidad de procesamiento,Yanacocha construyó el nuevo molino para procesar los minerales con contenidosulfuroso, lo cual permitirá mantener su producción de oro entre 1.8 y 2 millones deonzas, además invirtió US$ 46 millones en la construcción del reservorio San Josépara proveer de agua a la ciudad de Cajamarca; Por otro lado, Doe Run puso enmarcha su segunda planta de ácido sulfúrico a fin de procesar sus emisiones degases del circuito de plomo de La Oroya con una inversión de US$ 50 millones.

PROYECTO FUNDICIÓN, REFINERÍA,TOQUEPALA, Y CUAJONESouthern Perú

SPCC informó que invertirá US$ 2,108 millones en la ejecución de diver-sos proyectos para ampliar la producción de cobre y la explotación denuevos yacimientos. El programa de modernización prioriza la ejecucióndel proyecto cuprífero de Tía María en el Perú, ubicado en la regiónArequipa, las expansiones en las concentradoras de Toquepala y Cuajoney la expansión de la fundición de Ilo y de la refinería de cobre. Esta inver-sión aumentará la producción de cobre en 270,000 toneladas anualespara el año 2011, lo que representa 39% más del nivel de producciónactual.

La compañía viene evaluando actualmente las mejores opciones para elfinanciamiento de estos proyectos. Ya completaron los estudios defactibilidad para el proyecto Tía María con recursos indicativos de mineralde 638 millones de toneladas con un promedio de ley de cobre de 0.39por ciento.

PROYECTO AMPLIACION MARCONAShougang incrementara producción de HierroShougang Hierro Perú acordó poner en marcha el proyecto de la zonanueva de su mina de hierro en Marcona (Ica), que demandará una inver-sión de aproximadamente 1,000 millones de dólares. En un acuerdo dedirectorio realizada el 17 de junio de 2008, la empresa aprobó el desarro-llo de nuevas minas en sus concesiones, la implementación de infraes-tructura que incluye una nueva planta de beneficio y una planta de pellets.Dicho proyecto tiene como objetivo obtener un aumento en la capacidadde producción anual de ocho millones de toneladas.

PROYECTO AMPLIACION -REFINERIA DE ZINC CAJAMARQUILLAVotorantim Metais, ampliaciónVotorantim Metais invirtió en su proyecto de expansión US$ 500 millo-nes, lo cual permitirá alcanzar una producción de 320,000 TMF de zincpor año. La ampliación de la capacidad de producción se divide en dosetapas; la primera, que fue concluída en setiembre del año pasado, lo cualdemandó una inversión de US$ 100 millones y aumentó la producción de

EN CONSTRUCCIÓN:

PROYECTO TIA MARIASouthern Perú confirma financiamiento de proyecto Tia MariaSPCC ya comprometió una inversión de US$ 400 millones en la adquisi-ción del equipo necesario para poner en marcha la mina de cobre TíaMaría, según su presidente ejecutivo: "El proyecto Tía María está avan-zando bastante bien y ya tenemos una inversión comprometida de alrede-dor de US$ 400 millones de los US$ 934 millones que estimamos nece-sita este proyecto", indicó. Dijo que entre el equipo adquirido figura unaflota de volquetes y equipo auxiliar, así como un grupo de palas mecáni-cas y perforadoras. "Mientras que para el área seca ya tenemos pedida lachancadora, las fajas y el equipo para la distribución del mineral", TíaMaría, ubicado en el distrito de Cocachacra, en la provincia arequipeñade Islay, comenzará a producir a partir del 2011, unas 120.000 tonela-das, lo que a su vez representará unos US$ 900 millones en ventas. Elpaís se verá muy beneficiado, porque podría llegar a recibir US$ 250millones en impuestos, asimismo, el departamento de Arequipa, obten-dría otros 120 millones por concepto de canon minero. A ello hay quesumarle 20 millones de regalías y 1,25% de sus utilidades como aportevoluntario.

PROYECTO TOROMOCHOChinalco ejerció la opción del proyecto ToromochoEl 5 de mayo de 2008 el Gobierno Peruano firmó con la empresa AluminumCorporation of China (Chinalco), el contrato de transferencia de las con-cesiones del proyecto cuprífero Toromocho. La inversión comprometidaes US$ 2,152 millones y generará 5,000 empleos directos durante suetapa de construcción y otros 2,500 en la fase de operación. Se prevé elinicio de operaciones para el 2012.

CON ESTUDIO DE FACTIBILIDAD:

PROYECTO BAYOVARCompañía Minera Misky Mayo iniciará construcción de BayovarLa brasileña Vale iniciará la construcción del proyecto de fosfatos de Bayóvar,ubicado en la región Piura, la primera quincena de septiembre. Esta inver-sión implicará el desembolso de US$479 millones en una planta productoray en infraestructura paralela, según se ha establecido en el estudio defactibilidad de la empresa brasileña, aprobado en abril del año pasado porlas autoridades nacionales. La compañía también logró que el Gobierno leapruebe, en julio pasado, el estudio de impacto ambiental, el cual es uno delos pasos más importantes antes de desarrollar cualquier emprendimientoindustrial. Los fosfatos son un insumo para la fabricación de fertilizantes yexplosivos. El proyecto, una vez entrado en funciones, permitirá que se aba-raten los costos de la fabricación de estos productos en el mercado interno.La planta debe estar lista para marzo del 2010, y empezaría a producir enjulio de ese año.

PROYECTO QUELLAVECOAnglo American Quellaveco S.A. avanza proyecto QuellavecoLa empresa Anglo American Quellaveco utilizará 700 litros por segundo deagua superficial del río Titire para sus operaciones mineras. Originalmenteel proyecto iba a utilizar agua subterránea, pero hubo oposición de parte delas comunidades aledañas a la mina. Atendiendo a esta posición han hechola modificación al proyecto que demandará una inversión de US$1.700 mi-llones con una producción de alrededor de 200,000 toneladas de cobre finoal año.

PROYECTO GALENONorthern Perú Copper Corp avanza proyecto GalenoPara el último trimestre del 2008, la empresa china Jiangxi Copper tieneprevisto realizar los pedidos de equipos para la construcción del proyectominero de cobre Galeno (en Cajamarca), según lo manifestó su presiden-te, Li Yehuang. Jiangxi Copper, la segunda productora de cobre de China,anunció en marzo una inversión por US$ 1,400 millones para el proyectocuprífero que tiene en alianza con su par China Minmental Corporation.Galeno tiene previsto producir 200,000 toneladas métricas al año de con-centrados de cobre a partir del 2012.En diciembre del año pasado, lacompañía invirtió US$ 65 millones junto con China Minmental para ad-quirir a la compañía junior Northern Peru Corporation (Canadá).

PROYECTO MINAS CONGAYanacocha busca elevar su producción de oro, el desarrollo de este de-posito permitiría elevar su producción a 2 millones de onzas anuales deoro, pero esta reevaluando el desarrollo de este deposito; para desarro-llarlo más adelante, conforme los problemas sociales se solucionen, mien-tras su nuevo molino Goldmill este año permitirá estabilizar su produc-ción en 1.8 millones de onzas anuales

PROYECTO RIO BLANCOZijin Mining Group Co Ltd evalúa mejoras en Proyecto Rio BlancoZijin Mining Group está a evaluando mejoras al proyecto. El presidente dedirectorio de la compañía, Chen Jinghe, indicó que vienen reevaluando eldesarrollo del proyecto de cobre y molibdeno Río Blanco en Piura; elestudio de factibilidad estima una producción anual de 150,000 a 200,000toneladas de cobre. La empresa estuvo revisando un plan de inversionesde US$ 1,440 millones en el proyecto a fin de ahorrar costos y teneroperaciones medioambientalmente más amigables.

PROYECTO LA GRANJARió Tinto proyecta entrar en producción el 2014 en su proyecto La GranjaRio Tinto tiene previsto que el proyecto cuprífero La Granja entre en sufase de producción el año 2014, así lo dio a conocer el presidente ejecu-tivo del grupo de cobre, Bret Clayton, en Australia. Indicó que el proyectotiene un estimado inicial de inversión de entre US$ 2,500 millones y US$3,000 millones.
