Nothing is more practical than finding God,

than falling in Love in a quite absolute, final way.

What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, whom you know, what breaks your heart, and what

amazes you with joy and gratitude.

Fall in Love, stay in love, and it will decide everything. Fr. Pedro Arrupe, SJ

SERVING SAN DIMAS, LA VERNE AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES STAFFED BY THE CONGREGATION OF THE SACRED HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY

FEBRUARY 19, 2017 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time PAGE 2My dear sisters and brothers, Corinthians 13 is that part of scripture that defines the meaning of love from Paul’s perspective. If he were with us today he might make his reflection a little more real and less ideal. What is love meant to be in today’s turbulent, demanding, technological, complex world – Paul might say today: zzz Love is patient despite the small things that get on your nerves – socks on the floor, grinding teeth, being kept waiting for breakfast or the bathroom, for the symphony or kickoff. Love is kind in the midst of disappointment and hurt. Love comforts when he is down, supports when she is overwhelmed. Love is not jealous or pompous – especially when you are right and the other is most definitely wrong. Love is not green-eyed, love does not hold grudges. Love does not smother, is not possessive, refuses to manipulate. Love remains humble and is grounded in gratitude for one another. Love manages to survive despite how selfish and boorish lovers can be. Love neither insists on “my way” nor cops out with “you knew this about me before you married me.” Love is not thin-skinned nor does it go for the jugular. Love never takes the other for granted. Love finds its happiness in the joy of the other, its fulfillment in the dreams of the other. Love sees the world as “us” and “our,” not “me” and “mine.” Love lets go, encourages, comforts and consoles. Love forgives. Love does not tolerate estrangement or division. You will fight, you will argue – but love will always compel you to take the first step toward healing and reconciliation. Love does not rejoice in being right or smarter or more powerful. Love doesn’t care who brings home the bigger paycheck or who cooked dinner. Love only cares about the home you build together, and the blessings on your dinner table. Love always waits for the return of the other, no matter how long. The bond of love will become stronger as age takes its toll on you both, as you worry about your security, as you fear for one another’s safety. Such love never fails. [Adapted from a sermon by Rev. Walter J. Burghardt, S.J.] God has given us the great gift of his love. It is a gift that is priceless, but also a gift that demands a great deal from us. If its value is to be realized in the way we live. Each Sunday we gather to celebrate the mystery of God’s love. Never to be fully understood. We are who we are because of those who have loved us and those who refused to love us. Still growing in love with you, Fr. Rich, SS.CC.

Rich, SS.CC.

The Shield Men’s Group …right here at Holy Name of Mary … is growing! To every man in the parish, and friends.

Shield is a way for guys to become more secure in faith, as family men and as leaders in daily life. And… we are improving constantly, as a group that welcomes, informs, heals, strengthens and leads. We have new leadership, too! Ed Hills is passing the baton after 2 years at the helm, so Mike Noonan, one of the founding members, has moved into the Chairman slot, along with Co-Chair Jerry Pearman. These two are filled with new ideas and skills that promise to bring exciting times for Shield. The coming quarter, including the Lenten season, we plan to concentrate on the importance of being a man of consequence, a man of God, and an example of Christian living. We usually have a moderator lead us in discussion. Mike will be doing that on Feb. 21st, with Jerry Pearman on the 28th, and Jerry Stephens on March 7th. We add a new monthly phase March 14th – open mike night, with Eric Olson, where the discussions flow without planned subject matter. Outside leaders can include our parish priests or other notable people. Some of the upcoming meeting themes include:

Roles of Catholic men in our parish and our society… The seven pillars of Catholic spirituality (from Matthew Kelly) The Role of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives… Spiritual transformation – Becoming the best version of ourselves… Selecting, building and maintaining quality relationships… Resisting temptation and building self control…

(We’re also planning events to include families, such as picnics, ball games or other exciting outings.) So we ask each and every man in the parish – Are you really satisfied with who and where you are? Are you in complete control of your life? You deserve to be, so come join us at any of our weekly get-togethers. Very informal and welcoming – no charge or obligation whatsoever. Meetings are full of fun, laughs and fellowship – so never feel awkward about walking in the door, especially if you bring along a friend or co-worker. Guys come when they can, so we have meetings available every Tuesday evening, 7:15 PM, room 205 in the classroom corridor of the Hall for All. Just walk in and say “Hi!” It would enrich us all to have YOUR input, YOUR ideas and YOUR point of view! Come try us out!

Bring your palms from last year to the large labeled basket located in the Church Narthex from Wednesday February 15th thru Tuesday February 28th. Please do not include any paperclips, rubber bands, twist ties, plastic bags etc.… we ask for them loose as they will be burned together in a fire pit.

We would like you our parishioners to be aware of a new Eucharistic minister location for our weekend masses. These new positions will be created in the two large sections on either side of our main aisle, sections 3 and 4. The new section will be 3a and 4a with a precious body position for each as well as 2 precious blood positions at each station. We will be trying out these new positions starting in Lent, the weekend of March 4th and 5th. We want to see if this enhances the Eucharist a little more…we are grateful for your patience and flexibility as we undertake this new position for communion.

MIGRATION

“For more than 25 years, the Catholic Church in the U.S. has celebrated National Migration Week as an opportunity to reflect on the circumstances facing migrants in this country, including immigrants, refugees, children and human trafficking victims.” This year's theme was “Creating a Culture of Encounter.” It reminded “Catholics to look beyond their needs to the needs of those around them, as encouraged by Pope Francis during his first Pentecost homily as pope. “Migration is, more than anything, an act of great hope,” said Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, USCCB vice president, in a joint state-ment. “Our brothers and sisters who are forced to migrate suffer devastating family separation and most often face dire economic conditions,” the statement continued. “Refugees flee their countries due to war and persecution, which inspires them to risk everything for an opportunity to live in peace. “As Catholics in the U.S., most of us can find stories in our own families of parents, grandparents or great-grandparents leaving the old country for the promise of America. … Let us remind ourselves of those moments when our loved ones were forced to seek the mercy of others in a new land.” Excerpts - Angelus (Online) Dreamers’: At risk for an American nightmare January 12, 2017 - By Maria Luisa Torres

It may be difficult to understand why an abuse victim does not come forward immediately to report an assault. For those who have suffered sexual assault or abuse, denial can be a powerful defense mechanism, one that allows them to cope with the trauma and its af-termath. Often, an abuser is someone the victim knows and trusts, which makes it even harder to understand why the abuse is happening, and harder to come forward and ask for help and protection. For a copy of the VIRTUS© article “The Many Faces of Denial, Part 2” email: [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227 .

Have you considered a Stock or Security Donation to Your Parish? Holy Name of Mary recently received a very gen-erous donation from a parishioner in the form of a stock transfer, this particular gift was designated for the Hall for All campaign. We are grateful for all gifts to the parish. Direct gifts of stocks, mutual funds and other assets are simple for parishioners to make and can be very beneficial gifts for both the parish and the pa-rishioner. Parishioners can designate a stock dona-tion as an immediate gift OR use the donation to establish a life-benefit gift such as a Charitable Gift Annuity or a Remainder Trust. Donating appreciated securities to your parish can produce a tax-advantaged charitable deduction for the parishioner. Most securities donated to parishes are either common stocks or mutual funds. The Archdiocesan Department of Trusts and Estates handles all stock and security donations for Archdi-ocesan parishes. In most cases the parishioner in-structs his or her financial adviser or broker to transfer the desired shares of stock to the Archdioc-esan brokerage account and designates the parish as the beneficiary of the gift. The Archdiocese will provide the parishioner or the parishioner’s finan-cial advisor with the relevant information concern-ing its brokerage account. Upon receipt of the stock, the Archdiocese will credit the gift to the account of the parish. For more information, please contact Pat Joyce, Director of Administration, Holy Name of Mary Parish 909-599-1243 x 112 or [email protected] God Bless all of our donors!

1st Letter of Paul to the Corinthians

Join us for Bible Study

When: Thursdays Mornings at 9:30am

OR Evenings at 7:00pm

In the Damien Room First Corinthians deals with divisions in the believing community at Corinth and the harm that

they inflict on 'the body of Christ.' Paul also deals with many individual ethical problems in the community of which he has become aware through letters and contacts. Paul instructs the community concerning true wisdom; the sin of idolatry; the Lord's Supper; the role of God's ministers; the supreme importance of love; gifts of the Spirit; and the nature of the resurrection. The community of Corinth could easily be our own—struggling for unity in the midst of conflict, and discov-ering weaknesses and strengths. In this study, Paul invites you to find unity in the Gospel message. For more infor-mation, please call Charlie Martinez at 909-599-1243 ext. 140.

HNM Marriage Ministry

When couples are married, God forges the bond of love through his presence and his grace. Through that bond, he dwells at the center of a couple’s relationship. This covenant of love between spouses is not possible on their own, but is made possible through the Sacrament of Matrimony. Through the sacrament, a font of grace is constantly present to husband and wife to enable them to deepen their union and love each other as Christ loved the Church. Therefore, the Sacrament of Matrimony is not only a natural bond, but a supernatural one as well. Please join us for Session #5 of our Beloved series: Sacramental Bond Date: Tuesday, February 21 (not Feb. 20 as previously scheduled) Time: 7-8:30pm (6:30 Childcare check-in/ 6:45 Couple check-in) Cost: Free (Childcare provided at no cost for grades K-8) Location: Sacred Hearts Hall For inquiries: Dave and Giselle Smith (909)229-0889 [email protected]
