What is a Therapist?A: A person trained in the treatment and rehabilitation of clients or patients.

B: A person trained in assisting people to heal.

Functioning is not the goal. Functioning is a scale of measurement that supposedly indicates or reflects rehabilitation or healing but not necessarily!

What is Culturally Responsive?Sharroky Hollie, Ph.D., Executive Director, The Center For Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning

1. You can define it

Something that you are, not that you do

You are not confused about your identity

You know who you are serving and not serving

You don’t celebrate Black History Month

Practice everyday in everyway

What is Culturally Responsive?Classic Definition

Gloria Ladson-Billings in Dreamkeepers:

“A pedagogy that empowers students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by using cultural and historical referents to convey knowledge, to impart skills, and to change attitudes. (Therapists) practicing culturally relevant treatment know how to support (healing) in these students by consciously creating social interactions to help them meet the criteria of (personal) success, cultural competence, and critical consciousness.”

It (treats) to and through the strengths of these students. It is culturally validating and affirming.”

Our DefinitionHollie says in Validating and Affirming (2011)

“The validation and affirmation of the home culture and home language for the purposes of building and bridging the (client) to success in the culture of school and mainstream society. Simply put, CLR is going to where the students are culturally and linguistically for the aim of bringing them where they need to be academically. Metaphorically, CLR is the opposite of the sink and swim approach to teaching and learning.

Question:

Are culturally responsive clinicians born or are they made?

You know who you are serving or who you are not serving.

Who are the underserved in your caseload/program/school/agency?

Key term to remember is underserved:

An underserved (client) is any (client) who is not successful therapeutically, socially, and/or behaviorally in school because the Program (Lincoln) as an institution is not being responsive to the student.

Culturally Responsive TherapyIncorporate song: Use their favorite songs, analyze them and reference them appropriately (cultural consultation) in treatment.

Use rhymes: Don’t try to rap but use rhyming phrases whenever possible. What do they say? “Don’t hate, congratulate.”

Use mnemonic devices: For memory of goals, and rules; “Look before you leap into drama” (frog jumping into a pond)http://www.flocabulary.com/

Incorporate rhythm, harmony, call and response, question and answer, rhetorical questions, etc.

DO NOT attempt to to use slang or cultural phrases that are not a part of your personal, cultural vocabulary.
