AA backs new older driver assessment tool

The AA Driver Education Founda-tion congratulates the winners of this year ’s Transport Research and Educa-tion Trust Board award.

The winners, researchers at the Van der Veer Institute in Christchurch, are developing a screening device which will assist General Medical Practi-tioners to quickly and objectively predict whether there are concerns about older drivers having the ability to continue on as licensed drivers or whether they should be referred to Land Transport NZ for further as-sessment.

Mr Rob Lester, Trustee of the AA Driver Education Foundation Board says “the Foundation is concerned

for the safety of older drivers and is aware that recent legislative changes removed the mandatory testing of older drivers. Most older drivers sailed through the practical test, though this was a stressful experi-ence for many. Under the new rules the doctors of older drivers have the task of screening their patients’ fi tness to drive.”

“The ability to drive is very im-portant to accessing an independent lifestyle. Doctors have some tough decisions to make as they will not want to remove the right to drive from their own patients without good rea-son. To make these decisions, doctors need a reliable assessment tool that

they can use to screen their patients’ sensory-motor and cognitive abilities, to predict fi tness to drive.”

“The Van der Veer Institute’s project has the potential to make the assessment procedure easier to man-age for doctors and older drivers and will give older drivers a better under-standing of their personal capability to continue as safe drivers.”

“We welcome any initiative which provides some balance to a judge-ment call where medical opinion can be assisted with a reference check. This is a timely, research-based initia-tive that will be welcomed by doctors and the older drivers alike,” says Mr Lester.

New Ford Falcon coming - and possibly a Crewman from Holden?Ford Australia will

stage the offi cial public reveal of its

new Falcon sedan and ute on Sunday, February 17.

Final-phase development work continues on the re-designed ‘Orion’ large-car - examples of which are being increasingly seen on public Aussie roads (right).

It is expected there will be

new engine and transmission details for the eighth-genera-tion Falcon.

NEW HOLDENGo-Auto is reporting that

after Holden declared in no uncertain terms that it would not produce a replacement for the discontinued VZ Crewman, the company now says the four-door GMC Denali XT concept (left) developed for the 2008

Chicago Auto Show opening could effectively become an all-new VE Commodore-based dual-cab ute.

Offi cially, the GMC-badged Denali is strictly a concept that showcases the global design and engineering capability of Holden, which designed and constructed the show

vehicle using the worldwide resources of parent company GM at its Port Melbourne headquarters.

However, if it enters production, the four-seater ute would become the GMC brand’s fi rst passenger car-based pickup truck in the US – as well as a direct succes-sor to Holden’s now-defunct fi ve-seater Crewman.

New phase for Land Cruiser

Toyota’s new Land Cruiser 200 series follows on the heels of a predecessor (the 100 series) which has claimed one of the longest model cycles in the Toyota line-up.

Introduced in 1998, the Land Cruiser 100 series was the evolution of a long history of Land Cruiser models dating back to the original Toyota BJ in 1951.

Externally, the dimensions of the new model Land Cruiser 200 have increased by 60mm in length, 30mm in width and 15mm in height. The wheelbase remains the same but the front and rear tracks are wider by 20mm.

The engine in the new Land Cruiser 200 is a 4.5-litre, twin turbocharged V8, 32-valve DOHC diesel, with Toyota’s D-4D direct injection system.

Power output has increased by 30% to 195kW, and torque has increased by an impressive 50% with 650Nm available from just 1600rpm.

Toyota Land Cruiser 80 SeriesToyota Land Cruiser 80 Series

By Dean Taylor

This month’s test drives involve two V8 powered offerings - but of quite differing natures. This page

features an iconic Japanese 4WD and on Page 9 the great Aussie Holden V8 ute.

Toyota’s Land Cruiser gets a diesel V8 replacement for the former straight six.

Available now from Waikato Toyota, I drove the new Land Cruiser and was imme-diately amazed at how far these workhorses had come.

It was huge for a start, but easy to drive in town and on the open road.

It had keyless entry - in fact it had key-less ignition which is very cool.

The interior featured fantastic leather seats, satellite navigation and a terrifi c reversing camera - although apparently my backing wasn’t up to scratch and I upset the equipment.

The engine is a work of art.It is a 4.5 litre, twin turbocharged V8

diesel with 195kW of power and 650Nm of torque.

Not that long ago that was almost su-percar specs.

As we know, torque from a diesel is fantastic. It just pulls, and in the end that is probably better than all out power.

So the big Land Cruiser could get going pretty smartly, and had overtaking power and is rated to two 3500kg. That is a lot.

It is mated to a six speed transmission, with automatic or tiptronic type settings, driving full time all wheel drive with elec-

tronically selectable high and low ratios.Toyota say the new suspension system improves off

road performance by increasing wheel articulation, and improves on road driving by providing a more controlled ride and by reducing body roll in corners.

I didn’t go off road - its not my forté - but I did test the body roll as best I could and for this type of vehicle, I was impressed.

In fact Toyota have packed the technology into the new Land Cruiser to make sure it can handle any condi-tions you might want to throw at it.

Yet inside it has heaps of storage, can become a seven seater, provides a terrifi c audio experience and fantastic comfort.

All this is packed into a new design which is defi -nitely eye catching.

The extra size is utilised for the oc-cupants, thanks to the V8 confi guration which means the engine compartment is actually smaller than the previous models.

Yet despite the larger size, the design is also more pedestrian friendly.

There is no doubt the Land Cruiser 200 variant will continue a proud tradition for Toyota.

Taupo a good challenge for A1GP support classProduction racing Championship

driver Blair Thomson enjoyed a good start to 2008 in the sup-

port class for the New Zealand round of A1GP at Taupo.

The 19-year-old Te Awamutu driver was competing in Round 3 of his cham-pionship in his Fiat Punto HGT Abarth and says the atmosphere at Taupo was terrifi c.

He also enjoyed the new track layout once the car was set up for optimum perform-ance. Blair says turn 12 has gone from a high speed 4th gear turn to a slow 2nd gear corner, making it a challenge to gain speed through turns 13 and 14 before hitting the start fi nish straight. But it was also a challenge, and for those drivers who got it right, it was a chance to put some

distance on the fi eld.Racing in the hot, dry and dusty con-

ditions was also a challenge, and in the Production Racing classes only Blair and one other driver came away unscathed from the weekend in a fi eld of 31.

The Fiat handled superbly in the corners, gaining Blair valuable time

and places, but unfortunately he lost that back to some of the faster cars on the straights.

He managed fourth in his class and the team is looking for a little bit of extra power from the Fiat for the next round at Manfi eld in a week to try and hold off the straight line challenges.

Hot rodder Vanessa Hampton (right) was only too happy to be photographed with

her ‘pride and joy’ 1967 Mustang for DriveBy – especially as last time she was seriously in front of a camera she ended up with most of her clothes off.

She is quick to point out, however, it was all for a good cause.

The Te Awamutu Rod and Custom Club member has been involved in rodding for many years and joined a number of other female enthusiasts posing for Kiwi-A-Salt Calendar Gals raising money for Bill Ward and his team to return to Bonneville for Speed Week 2008, the 60th anniversary of the famous event.

She and partner Tony Peace are members of the Kiwi-A-Salt support-ers’ team and are attending the 2008 event to see ‘their car ’ race.

It is Vanessa’s second trip to the salt, she was there fi ve years ago helping crew for Kiwi racers, but Tony’s fi rst, so they are looking forward to sharing the experience.

Vanessa says it is an unbelievable place to visit – heaven if you are an auto enthusiast.

And there is no doubt that’s what Vanessa and Tony are.

Vanessa grew up around hot rodding and was a member of the Matamata Rod and Custom Club for many years. She was initially reticent about chang-ing clubs, but already knew quite a few of the members and hasn’t regretted joining since moving here.

She bought her car from her mother and has made it her own. Not that her Mum hadn’t already had a decent go at the Mustang.

When bought it she was running the straight six but that was quickly replaced by a 289ci V8.

Vanessa has repowered the Mustang with a 351ci V8 and C6 transmis-sion.

It has new Pearl White paint and new interior, so it looks original, but better.

And matching the performance and looks is upgraded suspension and han-

dling equipment so it is a joy to drive.Next for the Mustang is an injection

system, on its way from the States. The couple use the American muscle

car as much as possible, although Tony has his own projects in the wings.

Currently their shed is also home to a ’38 Dodge Sedan, ’52 Chev Sedan, ’51 Oldsmobile two door and an ’81 Oldsmobile Sedan.

The couple also run with the Waikato division of the National Street Rod Association and say they could be out every weekend if they wanted.

They love it for the family atmos-phere as well.

Most events they pack the boot, squeeze the kids in the back seat and make it a family weekend away.

For now though it’s a matter of bal-ancing time, money and needs.

They need to be part the sport, but also need a bit of time to put the fi nishing touches to their other projects – that is when they see how much money is left after they build another shed to house everything.

The next Kiwi assault on the Bonneville Salt is moving stead-ily towards its goal thanks to a

dedicated team and ever-growing sup-porters club.

Kiwi-A-Salt received a tremendous response from the huge crowds at the recent Kumeu Swap Meet (pictured above).

Te Awamutu Rod and Custom Club member Craig Houston was a member of the team for the two visits to Bonneville in the 1980’s, and he is an integral part of the 2008 challenge which aims to smash the current 184mph (296km/h) XF/BRMR record by doing what Burt Munro did - setting their sights on 200mph.

The new car is a modifi ed roadster with a rear mounted blown Ford fl athead V8 and amazing aero-dynamics.

It recently left Houston’s workshop with the new paint job he applied, as well as the stunning graphics by his brother Warren.

Keeping the support team on track is Barb Sundgren. She keeps offi cial supporters informed of progress and was the inspiration behind Kiwi-A-Salt

Calendar Gals. She reports that the calendar is a

huge success and many have been sent around the world.

“A project of this nature had never been attempted in hot rodding circles before and proved to be a winner.

“Calendars have been selling like hot cakes...have been predicted to become a collectors item, and have been sent as far away as the U.S. Ireland, Britain, Germany, Australia and South Africa.”

“The supporters club now boasts 205 members whose generosity and involvement has meant the build is con-

tinuing at a steady pace. “There is a huge contingent of Kiwi’s

fl ying to Utah this year to experience Speed Week, and those who are also

Kiwi-A-Salt Supporters club members will no doubt feel an immense sense of pride when they watch that car scream down the salt fl ats...knowing they have helped get it there.

The Kiwi-A-Salt Calendar Gals calendar features 55 tastefully naked hot rod-ding and drag racing wives, daughters and girlfriends dedicated to helping Bill Ward and his team return to Bonneville for Speed Week 2008, the 60th anniversary of the famous event.

The calendar also features the full story of Kiwi-A-Salt

- New Zealand’s fi rst team to tackle the Bonneville salt fl ats in a car (1979, 1982, 1984).

Support the team by buying a calen-dar from any Repco store or order one from Craig (027 4844070).

The public can also visit the website www.kiwiasalt.blogspot.com to fi nd out more about the Kiwi challenge and to make a donation and become part of the offi cial support team.

Vanessa 100% committed to the rodding lifestyle

Kiwi-A-Salt on track for ‘08

MISS ‘Julys’: Te Awamutu rodder Vanessa Hampton (right) and friends in Kiwi-A-Salt Calendar Gals.

The AA and the Government have combined forces to launch New Zealand’s latest road safety tool.

KiwiRAP is an internationally recognised road assessment programme (RAP) that aims to raise awareness of the risk of being involved in a crash on New Zealand’s state highways. KiwiRAP uses different methods to measure road safety, includ-ing risk maps based on the crash history of a road and fi ve-star ratings based on a road’s engineering features.

The purpose of KiwiRAP really is to increase public aware-ness that not all roads are the same. Motorists who are aware of the higher risk roads can then adjust their driving to take extra care.

Similarly, KiwiRAP allows us to identify safety shortcomings

that can then be addressed with practical road safety measures.“New Zealand’s unique geography poses special challenges

both for road builders and motorists. KiwiRAP takes an inter-nationally recognised road assessment formula and applies it to New Zealand roads.

Ute - or two door sportster?By Dean Taylor

Holden’s offerings in the utility range include awesome SS ver-sions - more like two door sports

vehicles than a work wagon. My orange (sorry Ignition Metallic) V8

ute from Rosetown Holden certainly drove like a sports car, handled like a sports car, felt like a sports car and sounded like a sports car.

Power comes from a six litre, alloy V8 which gives 270kW of power and has 530Nm of torque. They drive the rear wheels through either a six speed automatic or manual gearbox.

The lines of the ute are great - its such a clean look and the tail (which is what most people will see) are simple and meaningful - especially the quad exhaust system which lets out a note that tells you that you are driving a performance V8. Its terrifi c.

The Holden sits on 18” wheels as standard, but has options up to 20” avail-able to complement the sports suspension package and traction, steering and brake control systems.

The great handling lies in the wheelbase. The ute rides on the longer 3009mm plat-form of the Statesman and Caprice models, but does without the extra kerb weight of those luxury models.

The combination of the stability of the long wheelbase - with the leaner attitude and lower suspension of the VE sedans works wonders.

Interiors feature a colour coded design, with the use of leather in combination with other quality fi nishes, plus colour coded instruments.

It is a really comfortable and enveloping cabin with everything just about right, although I must be a slow learner because I jammed my fi nger twice releasing the handbrake.

Being a smaller cabin usually means not much room, but that is not really the case here.

There is storage behind the sports seats, even when they are a fair way back.

And if you get sick of listening to your V8, the ute has a great sound system which also works well in the smaller cabin.

The ute tray comes standard with tray liner and snug fi tting soft tonneau cover. A number of other options are available to suit the end users require-ments.

Utes are a great Australasian tradition - they are generally better looking, sportier and more fun than a truck or 4WD - and the Holden SS Ute looks to keep that tradition alive.

FBR going offroad with new corporate partner

FAT BASTARDS RACING (from left) Gary (Gazza) Beckham, Giles (Teaspoon) Bayley, Adam (Pup) Boyd, Murray (Cone) Jamieson and Alan (Pop) Hockly have gone ‘blue’ thanks to a new sponsorship deal with Yamaha.

When it comes to off-road motorcycling, no-one is more serious about having fun than the Fat Bastards Racing Team.

FBR’s approach to the sport is that is a true test of man, machine and liver - and its worth it.

They are currently putting the fi nishing touches into the organisation of the third annual FBR Chindie Sta-tion Trail Ride, a two day event of no fi xed duration or purpose other than to enjoy the sport of trail riding and get together with others of the same mind.

This year ’s event, which is being held over the week-end of February 23/24, is expected to attract upwards of 1000 riders.

The boys from FBR have even switched to blue this year, thanks to a new sponsorship deal with Yamaha Motorcycles.

The new Te Awamutu franchise with long-time FBR supporters Farm and Trail Motorycles, is looking to make a mark in the district and FBR are happy to work with them. They say if Yamaha play their cards right they might let them have naming rights for the 2009 event.

But for 2008 they are happy to fl y their colours, alongside those of other long-term sponsors Goldpine and Pitstop.

The team have prepared a 15km track for Saturday’s ride and a 30km tester for Sunday.

They say riding covers all classes, with a kids track, beginners track and the all-in track. They say they’ll even let quad riders join in.

Camping is free and the aim is to have fun - and for some build up for the fi ve day South Island ride that is the highlight of the event calendar. FBR say the camp is a family friendly affair and the idea is for everyone to enjoy themselves.

Riding on the Saturday gets underway about noon, and Sunday kicks off about 9.30am.

For more information contact Gary at Pitstop or Adam at Farm and Trail Motorcycles.

Razor sharp side-by-side

The new Polaris RZR, available from Farm and Trail Motor-cycles, is being hailed as a

groundbreaking ATV by critics.Website atv.off-road.com say ‘the

Polaris Ranger RZR is a ground-breaking product and is sure to win many awards’

‘We can’t wait to get our hands on a production unit and do some long-term testing on the durability of the newest side-by-side that puts fun fi rst’.

And atvconnection.com say ‘read-ers, you are witnessing history in the making. Polaris completely blew the lid off the side-by-side ATV market by introducing a new ATV so revo-lutionary, and raising the bar so high, that it simply must defi ne an all-new category of ATV – the Sport Recrea-tional Utility Vehicle (SRUV)’.

‘We predict that the new 2008 Polaris Ranger RZR is going to change the face of the entire ATV industry for years to come’.

The RZR is an off-road capable machine with stunning acceleration (0 - 55km/h in 4s) and a top speed of almost 90km/h.

Power comes from an 800cc, water liquid cooled twin cylinder four stroke EFI engine via an automatic, variable transmission.

A low centre of gravity and, 1270mm width, lightweight design and long-travel rear suspension means the RZR can go anywhere an ATV can - and much more.

It features an automatic system which runs in 2WD until extra traction is required, then becomes 4WD.

It also features a 140kg payload and can tow 680kg.

The driver enjoys tilt steering, adjustable hand rails and seats for comfort and safety.
