Mt. Airy Education Center

We were given a site in Mt. Airy park on which to design an education center where the teacher and students could stay for a few nights to a month. My design developed a secondary program, which was yoga and parkour. This design was derived from a tessalated folded plate system that was then mirrored to create new spaces.

Skagit County Jail

At DLR Group, I worked on the construction documents of a jail in Skagit County, which is north of Seattle, WA. Alot of what I focused on was building code and learning about jail design. I also helped design the paneling system on the front of the building.

Buncome County School Design

At Bowers, Ellis & Watson, I was given the opportunity to design a new 5th and 6th grade school for Buncombe County in Asheville, NC. We really focused on trying to make it environmentally friendly as well as fit all of the needs of the school. Asheville is made up of seven different school districts. For this project we worked in Enka.

Ludlow Literary Center

We were tasked to come up with a library design after studying and identifying the needs of nearby libraries. The library had a set location and had to include a certain amount of each space.

CAPSULE OF FRESHNESS

AGBOGBLOSHIE HAS PROBLEMS WITH WATER PURIFICATION, SOIL POLLUTION AND AIR QUALITY. WITH THIS SELF-SUSTAINING ECOSYSTEM, WE AIM TO RELIEVE SOME OF THESE ISSUES. OUR ECOSYSTEM CONTAINS AN AQUAPONIC SYSTEM AND GREEN WALLS. THE GREEN WALLS PURIFY THE AIR AND THE AQUAPONIC SYSTEM PROVIDES WATER TO THE PLANTS AND EDIBLE FISH FOR THE PEOPLE.

OBJECTIVE

GREEN ROOF

ELECTRONIC WASTE IS FULL OF TOXIC MATERIALS, CHEMICALS AND METAL SUCH AS LEAD THAT POLLUTES THE AIR THAT PEOPLE BREATHE AND CONTAMINATE WATER, SOIL. EACH TIME IT RAINS, THE TOXIC COMPONENTS IN THE SOIL FLOW INTO THE WATER. THESE CHEMICALS STAY IN THE FOOD CHAIN AND ARE DANGEROUS TO HUMAN HEALTH.

LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO THESE ENVIRONMENTAL HASARDS AFFECTS ALMOST ALL ORGANS, BONES, FERTILITY, IQ AND MORE.

AIR PURIFIER WALL:

IN AN E-WASTE DUMPING SITE MANY ACTIVITIES CONSIST OF BURNING ELECTRONIC MATERIALS. AGBOGBLOSHIE IS ONE OF THESE SITES. AIR SAMPLES FROM AGBOGBLOSHIE INDICATE EXCESSIVELY HIGH LEVELS OF CHEMICALS INCLUDING A NUMBER THAT CAUSE CANCER, RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS, AND CREATE OTHER ABNORMALITIES.

THE TOXIC SOIL DOES NOT ALLOW PLANTS TO GROW AND THAT IS WHY WE LOOKED FOR A NEW SOLUTION WHICH IS PURIFYING THE AIR WITH PLANTS BY CREATING A GREEN WALL.

WATER PUMP:THE WATER IN AGBOGBLOSHIE IS HIGHLY POLLUTED. BECAUSE OF THIS, THE PEOPLE HAVE A HARD TIME GETTING CLEAN WATER AND NON-POLLUTED FISH. OUR PUMP HELPS TO PROVIDE CLEAN WATER TO THE PLANTS SO THEY GROW UNPOLLUTED AND GIVES EDIBLE FISH TO THE COMMUNITY.

THE PUMP IS THE MAIN SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR THE PLANT WALL. THE FISH EXCREMENT IS PUMPED UP THE WALL INTO THE RESERVOIR WHICH IS THEN RELEASED DOWN TO THE PLANTS, PROVIDING THEM WITH NUTRIENTS. THE WATER THEN CONTINUES DOWN UNTIL IT FALLS BACK INTO THE FISH TANK AND THE CYCLE REPEATS.

We worked on creating a futuristic Africa while also making it environmentally friendly. Agbogbloshie has problems with water purification, soil pollution and air quality. We worked in a group and each chose separate focuses, our groups being an aquaponic system to help with soil pollution and food growth. We also prototyped many different water pumps in order to see if it was possible to build easily in Africa. Each teams design works together in order to create a more livable Agbogbloshie. Here is a link to a short video I made while there showing the different pump prototypes we went through and our final exhibition. Section

Sustainable Urbanism in China

We were given a site outside of Beijing to study and help plan for the future construction of homes. We looked at many different aspects of sustainable design such as green roofs, open space and transportation. We then went to Beijing and met with students from Beijing Jiaotong University and presented our planning proposal to officials with the help of the Beijing Jiaotong University. We spent a week in Beijing and a week in Quigdao studying the urban fabric.

Arduino Flower

During the Midwest American Institute of Architecture Students Annual meeting (Quad), I took part in a workshop teaching about Arduino and Grasshopper. We took an already in progress project and learned beginning coding by coding a flower to open and close its petals depending on the time of day and month. The petals were already 3D printed so we took them and added the arduino and motors in order to make it run. If you want to see it in action, here is a link to a short video I created.
