Tonight’s game is being broadcast in Kansas City on KCSP Radio (610 Sports) and the Royals Radio Network with Royals Hall of Famer Denny Matthews, Ryan Lefebvre and Steve Stewart, while Don Free controls the dials as the producer/engineer...tonight’s telecast is in High Definition on FOX Sports Kansas City with

Steve Physioc and Royals Hall of Famer Jeff Montgomery...the pre and post-game show, Royals Live, is hosted by Joel Goldberg.

KC CAN’T RECOVER FROM EARLY DEFICIT--The Royals fell to 1-3 on this 10-game homestand with a 9-4 loss to Seattle in the opener of this 4-game series on Monday night...starter Jonathan Sanchez had his shortest stint of a trying season, allowing 7 runs on 7 hits in just 1.1 innings, including a pair of homers...the M’s jumped out to a 5-0 first inning lead on a 3-run roundtripper by Casper Wells and 2-run shot by Justin Smoak...the Royals attempted to chip away, plating 3 runs in the third, but couldn’t recover completely to fall to 12 games under .500 for the first time this year...the hero of the night was southpaw Everett Teaford, who was slated to make the start tonight but was called upon to protect the bullpen and he provided 5.0 innings of 1-run relief to save the pen...the Royals wound up collecting 11 hits in the contest, including 3 from Alex Gordon and a 422-foot 2-run home run by Billy Butler, his team best 17th of the season...Kansas City has now dropped 11 of its last 14 after getting to within 4 games of the .500 mark on June 29.

ROSTER MOVES--The Royals made a pair of alterations to their pitching staff today with the recalls of lefthanded pitcher Ryan Verdugo and righthanded hurler Vin Mazzaro from Omaha (AAA)...the 25-year old Verdugo, who was acquired from the San Francisco Giants last November in the trade that sent Melky Cabrera to the west coast, will make his Major League debut tonight as

the starting pitcher...Mazzaro, also 25, makes his third appearance with the big league club this year, going 3-3 with a 5.70 ERA in 8 previous appearances, including 6 starts...Verdugo went 6-2 with a 3.58 ERA in 18 games (15 starts) for the Storm Chasers and worked a scoreless frame in the AAA All-Star Game last Wednesday night in Buffalo...this is his second stint with Kansas City this year, spending two days with the big league club in early-June as bullpen insurance...to make room on the roster, the Royals designated lefthanded pitcher Jonathan Sanchez for assignment and optioned outfielder Jason Bourgeios to Omaha.

FRENCHY NABS ANOTHER ONE--As runners continue to try, Jeff Francoeur continues to throw and last night he recorded his ninth outfield assist of the 2012 season by nabbing Michael Saunders at third base after a single to right field...Frenchy is second in the American League in outfield assists, two behind leader Jose Bautista of the Blue Jays...since becoming a full-time outfielder in the big leagues in 2005, Francoeur has recorded 106 assists, which are 29 more than his nearest competition in that span, Chicago’s Alfonso Soriano (77)...Frenchy’s next outfield assist will give him eight straight seasons of double-digit assists.

GORDO STRONG IN TOP SPOT--It started harmlessly enough with a 1-for-4 game on May 27, the day that manager Ned Yost decided to insert Alex Gordon into the leadoff spot in the lineup on a consistent basis...since that afternoon in Baltimore, Gordon has batted at a .345 clip (60-for-174) in 43 games with 29 runs, 18 doubles, a .425 on-base pct. and .914 OPS, while hitting safely in 35 of those affairs...overall, his .301 average from the #1 spot is the fifth best among American League leadoff men, while Gordo’s .391 on-base pct. in that role is third behind only Detroit’s Austin Jackson (.406) and the Angels’ Mike Trout (.403)...since being inserted in the #1 spot dating back to last season, Gordon has hit .304 in 144 games from the leadoff position with a .386 on-base pct...he added 3 more hits to his resume last night, including his 29th double of the year, tying him for first in the A.L. with Cleveland’s Shin-Soo Choo, second only in the Majors to Cincinnati’s Joey Votto (36), who just went on the D.L. with torn knee cartilage.

ESCOBAR AMONG SHORTSTOP ELITE--The 2012 All-Star Game has come and gone, but despite not making the Midsummer Classic shortstop Alcides Escobar continues to show why he belongs in the conversation when it comes to being among the top at his position...the 25-year old currently leads all big league shortstops with a .311 average, good for 10th overall in the A.L., while ranking second at his position in the Majors in on-base pct. (.354), tied for third in doubles (21) and fourth in slugging pct. (.434)...he is hitting .362 (42-for-116) over his last 31 games...his “worst” month to date was a .295 April, but he’s since batted .310 in May, .333 in June and has a .300 average to this point in July...in the 184 games since bottoming out at .203 on June 6 of last year, Esky has batted .298 (195-for-654), which is the second best batting average among all big league everyday shortstops (minimum 162 games), trailing only Derek Jeter (.314).

Royals vs. Mariners Last night was the first of eight meetings for a two week stretch between the Royals and Mariners, with Seattle getting the jump with the 9-4 decision in game one...this series runs thru Thursday and then KC will travel to Safeco Field for an extended weekend set at the end of the next road trip...the Royals hold a 210-189 advantage in the all-time work, including a 115-89 edge at “The K.”Date Site Score WP LP Att.7/16 KC L, 4-9 Vargas Sanchez 16,6977/17 KC7/18 KC7/19 KC7/26 @ Sea7/27 @ Sea7/28 @ Sea7/29 @ Sea

TONIGHT’S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Blake Beavan (3-6, 5.91) vs. LHP Ryan Verdugo (M.L. Debut) 2011 2010 Career 2012 2011 CareerBlake Beavan vs. Royals 1-0 - 1-0 Major League Record 3-6 (5.92 ERA) 5-6 8-12Ryan Verdugo vs. Mariners 1st appearance Major League Record Major League Debut

RYAN VERDUGO is slated to make his Major League debut tonight after having his contract recalled from Omaha (AAA) prior to the game...Verdugo, 25, was acquired with Jonathan Sanchez from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for Melky Cabrera on November 7, 2011. SERVICE TIME, YES; BIG LEAGUE WORK TO COME--Ryan initially was recalled from Omaha on June 5 to provide depth to the bullpen...but he did not appear on either June 5 or 6 vs. Minnesota and was optioned back to the Storm Chasers postgame on the 6th. RECENT ACTION--Ryan has not allowed a run in July for Omaha, working three times, including twice in relief, totaling 8.0 innings allowing 6 hits and 3 walks with 10 strikeouts...his lone start in that span was on July 5 in Iowa, posting a 3-0 win allowing just 4 hits and 2 walks while fanning 6 over a 6.0-inning stint...he opened the campaign with 14 consecutive starting assignments before heading to the bullpen, where he has appeared in 3 of his last 4 outings...his most recent work on the hill was on Saturday at home vs. Iowa, tossing a scoreless inning of relief with a hit, walk and 2 K’s, closing out a 7-1 Storm Chasers win. JOINING KC’S STARTER LIST--When Ryan takes the ball in the top of the first he’ll be the 197th different hurler in franchise history to make a start, the 58th different lefthander...he’s the third different hurler this year to make his Royals’ debut, joining Jonathan Sanchez and Will Smith, both southpaws, with Smith also making his big league debut when he started on May 22 in Yankee Stadium...should Verdugo post a victory tonight, he’ll be the 267th different pitcher to record a triumph in a Royals’ uniform. PCL ALL-STAR WITH OMAHA--In his first season both at Triple-A and in the Royals organization, Ryan has made a solid first impression...he is 6-2 with a 3.58 ERA in 18 games, including 15 starts, for the Storm Chasers...his work was rewarded with a trip to the Triple-A All-Star Game last week in Buffalo where Verdugo tossed a scoreless third inning with a walk and a strikeout in the PCL’s 3-0 shutout victory...he has posted a 3.39 ERA (85.0 IP, 64 H, 32 ER) in his 15 starts and just a 9.00 ERA (3.0 IP, 3 ER) in his 3 relief outings...PCL hitters are batting just .217 against him this season. RELIEVER UNTIL 2011--The Giants’ ninth round selection out of LSU in 2008, Verdugo worked almost exclusively as a reliever in the San Francisco system until last year when he made 25 starts for Richmond (AA)...entering the 2012 campaign, the southpaw had allowed just 185 hits in 243.1 career innings for a .213 opponent batting average and had struck out 300, or 11.10 per nine innings...a graduate of Lake Stevens (Wash.) High in 2005, he underwent Tommy John surgery that same year and surfaced at Skagit Valley College in 2007 before pitching the 2008 season at LSU, where he was a teammate of Royals reliever Louis Coleman.
