In 2007, OFSAA joined the True Sport Movement to reinforce the positive values that school sport stands for. True Sport is a national program designed to promote a positive, meaningful, and enriching experience for all who participate in sport. It espouses important principles such as fair play, respect for others, staying healthy, and having fun, all of which are synonymous with school sport.

In the context of an athletic competition, respect means respectingallthoseinvolved, includingofficials.Onoccasion, there are incidents of misconduct at OFSAA championships and some of these are the result of actions orwordsdirectedtowardsofficials;inotherwords, alackofrespectforofficials.

Officialsareanimportantpartofthecompetitionandarethere to enforce the rules of the game so it is contested as fairly as possible. They are not out to intentionally impact the outcome of a competition. Sometimes it may seem

thatway, particularlyifanofficialisnotasexperiencedas others, or if they are simply having a bad game. Do officialsmakemistakes?Yes,butsodocoachesandathletes.

Coaches can teach respect to their athletes by the manner inwhichtheydealwithofficials.Ifacoachberatesanofficial, thiscantypicallyleadtodisciplineproblemsintheplayers, lack of focus on the competition, and poor athletic performance. Student-athletes may witness this and think it’sthenorm, andevenacceptabletoberatetheofficial, and may duplicate this behaviour when dealing with other authorityfiguresintheirlives.

Thisisn’ttosaythatofficialscan’tbequestionedbecausethere should be a certain level of accountability. But handlingdisagreementsoraskingquestionsofofficialsinarespectful manner and at the appropriate time can have a powerful positive impact on the athletes and spectators.

One of the great things about sport is the emotion it generates. There are a whole series of emotions that come to life during the course of a competition, and certainly overtheentireseason.Oneofthedifficultchallengesforathletes, coachesandofficialsistocontroltheiremotionsand channel them in a positive way that will be admired by others.

When OFSAA sanctions a school to host an invitational event, all teams participating in that competition must be eligible under OFSAA rules and regulations, and teams and individuals must be supervised by a teacher for the duration of the event.

Cross Country in the USTeams or individuals participating in cross country meets in the US this fall MUST receive OFSAA sanction to attend. Failure to notify OFSAA on the appropriate form, well before the event, will result in the school not being granted entry into the meet.

Many states holding invitational competitions require Ontario teams to receive sanction from their provincial organization.

Interprovincial Tournaments or Exhibition EventsSchools sending competitors to events in other provinces must seek sanction from OFSAA as well. Schools hosting teams or individual competitions where schools from other provinces are participating must also receive sanction, or the invited schools may not attend.

Despite a snow storm that closed down one the host sites, Randy Bartlett and his experienced organizing committee served up a spectacular championship. They quickly relocated the games to a backup site and the championship ran perfectly on time. Thank you to Randy and his organizing committee for all of their hard work and effort.

The banquet also proved to be a fantastic event with Chatham-Kent bringing back their championship gold medal winning team from 10 years ago to share their experiences with the athletes in attendance. Pat Jackson, a long time coach and mentor for countless years, won the Leadership in School Sport Award.
