Los Alamos Fair & Rodeo Weekend August 10, 11, 12, 2012The weekend of August 10, 11 and 12 is the date to save for the Los alamos Fair and Rodeo!

It all kicks off Friday night. The Stone River Boys will be performing at Ashley Pond at 7pm for the Summer Concert Series. They are a Blues/Country band.

Saturday, August 11th the fun continues. At 10 a.m. the Fair & Rodeo Parade begins so get a great seat in the shade on Central Avenue. Following the parade at 11 a.m. is the Arts & Crafts Fair at Fuller Lodge and musical performance at Ashley Pond by Bill Hearne’s Road House Review.

Also slated are exhibits at Mesa Public Library and the Rodeo, of course, at the Fair grounds.

Other activities include a Pool Tournament at Betty Ehart Senior Center and the Sheriff ’s Posse Dinner and Dance from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Posse Shack.

Sunday there are more activities at the Fair Grounds with the final day of the Rodeo.

PLACE Hosted by LACDC PLACE, a niche developer from Minneapolis made their second site visit to Los Alamos in June to present a proposal to Los Alamos County and the community. Several meetings were held over a two day period. The ball is now in County government hands to reply to the proposal.

There were several key points presented at the meetings:

1. The vision is for a $50-million-plus, catalytic downtown project that includes a variety of state-of-the-art homes, including work/live for creatives (artists, scientists, inventors, technologists), a hotel/conference/event center, and creative retail, all built to the highest possible performance standards.

2. PLACE would serve as the nonprofit developer, and the county would serve as the project sponsor.3. PLACE will raise 90% of the total project budget if the County will commit to 10% of the total project budget.

4. Only $2.7 million (the initial seed money) of the County’s commitment would be at risk. No money will be spent

without the County’s prior approval.

5. PLACE will reduce the risk for the County by providing security for the at-risk investment, including property (both intellectual and real property). PLACE was invited to the community by LACDC as a result of one of the strategies identified in the Creative District Plan that was recently adopted by Los Alamos County.

The Los Alamos Chamber and the Los Alamos Lodger Tax Board (LTAB) have partnered to launch an online training effort to better educate local tourism industry employees about the community “where discoveries are made.” Knowledgeable employees will help to incite a desire in visitors to discover even more about Los Alamos’ history and attractions, while replacing any misnomers they may have with facts. “Visitors trust that the information they receive about Los Alamos from our employees in the hotel, restaurant, and tourism industries is accurate,” said Linda Deck Los Alamos Tax and Advisory Board President. “So we launched an easy-to-use online training which empowers Los Alamos’ essential

Welcome Katie Stavert, Business Advisor Katie Stavert grew up in Los Alamos. She graduated from Los Alamos High School in 2004 and moved to Colorado to attend college. She graduated from Colorado Mesa University with a Bachelors of Science in Accounting. Katie moved back to Los Alamos to be closer to family and enjoy small town life. She is currently working as a Business Advisor for the UNM-LA Small Business Development Center. She is directing the Youth Business Grant Program, which is a great program to help youth learn about entrepreneurship. Katie is also directing the Curb Appeal Grant Program which helps downtown businesses improve their curb appeal. In her free time, Katie enjoys hanging out with her dog, Dakota, family and friends. She loves to go hiking and be outdoors. Katie is eager to meet and help existing businesses as well as people considering starting up a business.

2012 Science and Math-based Art Competition

The Los Alamos Creative District in conjunction with Los Alamos MainStreet is accepting entries into the Science and Math-based Art Competition. The inaugural competition last year netted more than 900 entries from throughout the world and prize winners shared $3500 in prizes. Last year’s ‘Best in Show’ winner pictured above.

The juried compeition will coordinate with exhibits and awards presentation at the Next Big Idea Festival on September 15th in Los Alamos. Entries are accepted throughout June and July.

2012 Youth Business Grant Program

This was a fantastic year for the Youth Business Grant Program (YBGP) of Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation (LACDC). With a record 25 applications received, YBGP awarded 18 grants (up to $400) to help youth ages 13 to 19 start a summer business or expand existing businesses.

FAN44 = Food and Networking for four people ... is an addition to the networking benefits of Chamber membership. It provides an effortless way to connect with small and varied groups of people to share what you are up to and learn about what others are up to. So far, nearly seventy people from member businesses and organizations have already signed up to participate in these twice per month lunches. So what is it about? FAN44 lunches will be scheduled for noon on the second and fourth Fridays monthly. Participants receive an email reminder on the Monday of a FAN44 luncheon week and are given the option to opt-out of that week’s lunch by simply clicking a link in the email ... this takes them off the list for that week if they are going to be unavailable or on vacation. Participants are placed in a different four to five person lunch group each time and are assigned to have lunch at a member eatery. The member eatery reserves a table for the group and has agreed to provide separate checks to make it easy to get in and out. Participants are rotated between the

member eateries so it gets them mixing it up as they support our community’s lunch establishments. Each participant gets an email the day before each FAN44 luncheon telling them who they will be having lunch with and where the lunch will be. There is no cost or fee for your participation during the trial period which will run through August. Participants will be contacted in late August to get feedback and to see if they would like to continue to participate. After August, we anticipate charging a $10 per month fee to defray the cost of the service. We hope you will see this as a positive opportunity for your business -- please let us know if you want to participate. tourism-industry employees with knowledge about the history, culture, and attractions in the County. A centralized source of information is not only helpful for them, but for Los Alamos residents and visitors alike.” The training consists of five modules, each of which includes a short video (under 5 minutes) paired with a short quiz. The modules address “basic history, facts, & figures”, “attractions”, “events & activities”, “shopping, dining, lodging, & entertainment”, and “misconceptions.” The course is provided online via the web. Individuals who successfully complete the course receive a certificate recognizing them as a Los Alamos Insider and businesses whose staffs complete the course will be recognized in local media releases. “The goal is to have all of Los Alamos County’s tourism-industry employees complete the course,” says Chamber Executive Director Kevin Holsapple. “We want to here from any business that is interested in having their staff

take the course. It is free, easy to implement professional development that will improve the ability of the business to serve their customers.” “I’m not surprised that the most educated County came up with such a smart way to provide its vital tourism professionals with information about the city in which we live,” said Agatha Marquez, General Manager at Holiday Inn Express Los Alamos, who will be utilizing the course with her staff. “The course is loaded with questions we get asked all the time. Summer Volunteers

It’s raining volunteers! I just love summer – for the obvious reasons and also because of all of the volunteers we have helping us out during this time. Here we have pictures of three new additions to our staff: Mathias Lam, Victor Kim and Grace Kim. Grace and Victor are brother and sister entering their freshman year at Los Alamos High School and Mathias just graduated LAHS in May and is attending University of New Mexico, Albuquerque in the fall.

The operation of a free bus service from White Rock to Bandelier began on June 1. The service is provided by Atomic City Transit, and will run 7 days a week until November 30, 2012, then resume again in the spring of 2013.

The Chamber has been involved with the County, which operates Atomic City Transit, in planning how to best orient visitors to Los Alamos County - the attractions, the businesses, and the recreational opportunities. We’ve printed up thousands of our rack cards which feature the shopping and dining businesses in our community, and each visitor will get a visitor guide from the bus driver as they enter the bus.

We will be surveying local businesses to see if they can feel the impact of the information we’re providing on the buses, and we also will conduct random surveys of passengers to see if the material we’re giving them has had any influence on their decision to spend more time in Los Alamos.

Saturday, June 16th, Los Alamos Creative District (LACD) took part in Albuquerque’s SummerFest Art Market. Ten local artists displayed their art while LACD displayed tourist information, upcoming events and promoted what Los Alamos has to offer.
