Party goers make lasting friendships at WINGS2014

F

rom the friends you meet to the skills you gain, Scouting and Guiding can have a huge impact on every aspect of your life. We wanted to know your

stories and experiences.

James, Oscar and Joe from 84th Reading, love Scouting: “We’ve been given loads of opportunities including learning to light fires, pitch tents and go camping; many of these we would never have been able to try otherwise”.

Ukrainian Guides Nastya and Polina think that Guiding is a priceless experience that will remain with them throughout their lives. “We love how we can walk through this campsite and shout ‘high 5’ or ‘free hugs’ and everyone responds without any questions being asked! Only Guides and Scouts would do that because everyone is one big family,” they said.

Guiding and camping has also taught them how to live independently: “Coming to WINGS2014 has shown us lots of cultures; Guiding opportunities like this let us see the new faces and places!”

Vicki, a staff member, told us how being a Scout leader has shaped her career dramatically. After becoming a Young Leader and learning to work with children she consequently trained to be a primary school teacher. She has also met many international friends through Scouting who have given her the opportunity to travel the world.

As a result of friendships made at WINGS2009, Claire has continued to meet new people within Somerset Network and their local county: “Guiding and Scouting has helped me with my career too; my boss is a Scout Leader and my CV stood out to him because of my Guiding background.”

Banstead Explorer leaders Phil and Tom have both been a part of Scouting for their entire lives. They told us how it has given them the confidence to go on to other things which they would struggle to do otherwise: “When I became a leader I had to learn to be able to stand up and talk to groups of people which is a skill I now use at work every day,” Phil told us.

International events have also been a crucial element of their Scouting lives so far. Tom as an Explorer sailed across the North Sea which he would never have dreamed of doing otherwise. Phil told us that one of his most treasured memories was looking at the view from the top of the mountain at Kandersteg International Scout Centre, “It was really a once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s these Scouting experiences which have given me the motivation to do something special with my life”.

Tea With Brendan Hey Guys

I sat next to the Duchess at tea;

It was just as I feared it would be.

 Planning something special?

Let us know and we’ll include it in our ‘Dont Miss’ section.

Thank You All So Much

I

would just like to thank you all to the WINGS2014 Staff, Troop and Unit Leaders and most importantly - the

Guides, Scouts, Senior Section and Explorers, for such a Brilliant WINGS camp again.

I have been to all the WINGS camps, and signed a lot of challenge books during this week! each camp is different and the Scout and Guide County Commissioners of the early 1990’s who had the vision of a joint Scout and Guide International camp, the late Roger King and Janet Shurmer, would be so proud of you all, in achieving so much and giving so much over these past years.

A special thank you to Brendan and Kate and their teams, Hamish Stout and Jenny King, your current County Commissioners and all their support teams. Also to our Berkshire Trefoil Guilds in their help in staffing roles and daily support roles in the retail shops, and also to the Scout Active Support teams as well. Thank you to all the volunteers here at WINGS2014 and the Brownie and Cub leaders who supported WINGS on Wednesday.

I have also been delighted to see so many Young Leaders in both the staff roles and in the Unit and Troop roles, the future of our wonderful movements are safe in their hands.

I have also been most impressed with our young members’ behaviour and kindness to their fellow campers, well done!To our International Visitors, it has been a delight to meet so many of you, we must never forget that we are all in a Huge International Family, we wish you a safe journey home to your lands, and please take our special Royal Berkshire good wishes to all your members abroad and in your homes. Fresh News DailyHer rumblings abdominal Were simply phenomenal,

The Daily Brew has met a lot of very lovely people this week but there are some that quite simply have made our week with their kindness, generosity and the extent to which they embody the spirit of Guiding and Scouting.

Matthew Buchanan for tirelessly getting us the perfect picture for any story and special congratulations to him for achieving a Distinction in his Foundation Degree. Charlie Booth for being the friendliest security bod we’ve ever met. Cyd & Jo,

the angels of Site Ops for being unfailingly positive under the greatest of pressure. Annick, our International Liaison super star who has worked with us to encompass the international nature of WINGS2014 within our pages. Mick Stocks for arriving

Closing Ceremony

At the end of a Jamboree there are goodbyes to be said and celebrations to be had. Last night the closing ceremony took place to what has

been another fantastic WINGS camp.

After a comical and entertaining lip sync video put together by the WINGS2014 photography team, Danny and Martin were welcomed to the stage by an enthusiastic crowd, who especially enjoyed their pink sparkly jackets. Melissa, 13, sang beautiful to the crowd, who clearly enjoyed the performance, followed by a cast dance to Absolutely Everybody.

Throughout the week, participants have been learning

a carnival dance within their sub camps and everyone joined forces for a mass dance with 7000 people.

Thanks was given by Jenny and Hamish, the Berkshire County Guide and Scout Commissioners, who thanked all staff, leaders and participants for contributing to a fantastic week. Followed by a energetic dance by the fantastic cast who danced to One World, One Vision; a poignant song for what Scouting and Guiding aim to achieve.

Following a farewell and thanks message from Camp Director, Brendan Booth, the Scout and Guide flags, along with the WINGS2014 flags were lowered and

handed to Brendan to pass on to the next Camp Leader for WINGS2019.

Participants came to demonstrate their skills they had learnt this week in Fling It! LED pois and fire caused much amazement from the crowd, followed by a video of memories from the week. Requests from participants caused the return of the red button, which was pressed for one final time to prompt a spectacular array of fireworks that filled the sky above the stage, kicking off the carnival party for one last celebration of fun, frivolity and friendship.

An American Day Out

Lily and her friends popped off to Windsor in the jolly lovely sunshine on Thursday for a spot

of afternoon tea with crumpets. On their lovely little jaunt towards Her Majesty’s residence they discovered how frightfully pretty Windsor Great Park really is. “Blimey,” exclaimed Lily, 13, from Washington. “Heavens,” added George.

Upon reaching Windsor’s principle shopping arcade, the marvellous little group bumped into Benedict Cumberbatch, of all people, who promptly dropped his paper bag of aniseed balls. He was terribly nice about it all, of course, and offered to treat the girls to tea and crumpets aboard his river boat.

Benedict and the girls drank tea on the deck, thankfully the weather was lovely all afternoon.

On the way home, Lily found that she was still hungry: “Lovely tea wasn’t it,” she said, “But crikey I could do with a plate of chips.” All the girls were in agreement and were quite knackered after their little adventure so visited the chip shop for a light fish supper.

The Daily Brew's List of Loveliness

WOWEDThank you to all the messages we have received during WINGS2014.

Just a quick note to say, THANK YOU so very much to you and your team for organising today.

Tom can be quite a reserved little thing and all the way home he was positively fizzing with stories of the day and excitement that he might have the opportunity to go again in 2019.

I’m always so chuffed with the energy and enthusiasm that Cubs manages to instil in him every week but today was like that super charged.

Thank you again so much for the opportunity and for your dedication in making it happen.

Yours, a very proud mum of an exhausted but utterly ebullient boy.

Lily and her home girls hit up Windsor town in some sick sunshine Thursday to check out the

local diners.

On the way up to the Castle, the guys found out how totally awesome-looking Windsor Great Park is: “Gee, it’s like totally amazing, it’s soooooooo old.” “That’s rad,” added George.

When they got to Windsor’s Mall, the guys took a selfie with Zac Efron. “Have you met the Queen,” said Lily? Zac totally said yes and said: “Why not grab a milkshake with me at the Candy Store?”

Zac and the guys slurped on milk shakes all afternoon in the heatwave.

On the way home, Lily was like: “I’m literally starving,” so the guys headed to get a hot dog and fries from the burger guy.

After a long day, the guys were totally zooked out so hit the hay.Yeah.

This fictitious article was inspired by Lily, Zoe and The Washington State Girl Scouts of the USA. Thank you.

The Daily Brew finally managed to catch up for a cup of tea with Brendan Booth, our busy WINGS Director. Earl Grey (milk and no sugar) with a milk chocolate digestive was his refreshment of choice.

Enthused by what he has seen and experienced on previous international camps and the fantastic time he had witnessed participants having, Brendan told us how he was appointed to the post of Camp Director in late 2011; the start of a long journey, with lots of hard work, that led to the very successful WINGS2014 we have all experienced.

Brendan told us his goal has always been to provide a fantastic experience that will provide life long memories for everyone involved. His vision was that the opportunities and achievements people experienced during WINGS2014 will have a long lasting affect and shape the people they will become in the future.

He was excited that although WINGS captivates and is primarily focused around the same core values and programme as weekly Scouting and Guiding, WINGS provides a platform to experience this on a wider, multicultural scale with opportunities to deliver the same experiences, but with people from other counties and countries that weekly meetings do not normally allow.

When asked for one moment that encapsulates his vision he spoke of Holly, a profoundly disabled girl, who's wish was to camp with her parents. The WINGS team pulled together to ensure that Holly could access the same experiences as other participants on site and it made his job worth it to see the amazing time she was having

participating in climbing and the water activities.

One visitor told Brendan, "Everyone here is doing and experiencing something, no one is sitting around!" and the enthusiastic visiting Brownies and Cubs on WOW who are enthused, motivated and looking forward to coming back as participants at WINGS2019 is exactly what Brendan hoped to see at WINGS2014 and makes all the hard work over the last 3 years entirely worth while.

Brendan told us, "I need to thank three groups of people. The staff for months of hard work and preparation, the participants being full of energy and enthusiastic to get involved in all activities and the leaders who give up their annual leave to give the young people these fantastic activities on top of their regular weekly meetings. Without any one of these groups WINGS2014 would not be able provide the exceptional experience it does."

When asked what his advice would be for the next WINGS Director, Brendan said, "Pick the right people for the job and trust them to do it well." It takes an incredible team to put something like WINGS2014 together - you need the right people with the right skill set to pull something like this off.”

The Daily Brew asked Brendan what he would like participants to take away from their WINGS experience. His advice is to treasure friendships and keep in touch with friends you have made. Regardless of whether they are from another domestic unit or an international unit, the friendships that will develop as you stay in touch will enrich your lives in ways you won't understand now. WINGS will have been an amazing opportunity to unite as one under

our common membership to share something special with memories that will last a lifetime.

Although it will be a few months before Brendan completes his WINGS2014 job role for good, he is looking forward to his next role of Deputy County Commissioner for Dorset and on behalf of the participants, leaders and staff The Daily Brew would like to thank Brendan for his hard work, vision and commitment to a fantastically successful WINGS2014.

WINGS2014 has been thoroughly enjoyed by all ages across the camp. The Daily Brew caught up with the oldest and

youngest person on site to find out their stories.

Lois Roberts, 86, has been on WINGS2014 working on the Trefoil Guild stand. Lois was born in 1928; she has a son, a daughter and two grandchildren.

Lois does some volunteer work for her Methodist church but Girlguiding is her main hobby. Lois joined the Association as a Brownie in West Yorkshire in 1935; she became a Guide then a Lieutenant (now Assistant Guider) before becoming a Guide Captain after moving to Berkshire. She is now the Berkshire Badge Secretary as well as being a member of Trefoil Guild.

Lois was a Guide in West Yorkshire during the troubled times of World War Two. She said: "When I was a Guide camping itself was the week's activity. We only camped locally as petrol was rationed and we travelled there on the back of the lorry with the equipment. Camps were normally in farmers fields - he would dig trenches for the lats. We made all the equipment for our camp, including our beds. We

cut turf for the fireplace and watered it so we could replace it. We gathered wood and cooked only on fires.""I remember one occasion there was a cloud burst in the afternoon. The camp was flooded and we had to move into the farmers cottage. Our company was particularly proud of ourselves, and our bed rolls, as we only had one wet bed!"

Lois continued to explain how her company helped with the war effort: "We went out and collected stagnant moss which was used to make wound dressings and we collected rosehip to make a vitamin C drink for babies."

She concluded: "Girlguiding has changed a lot over the years. It was a long time before I saw a fridge on a camp. We used to have a larder hung in the trees but you had to be careful as once, the squirrels got it!"

Ethan Miller, who is 39 days old (born 2nd July), has spent the week with his mum, Marie Miller and 1st Cottersfield Guides on the SCIENCE sub camp. Ethan has two older brothers aged 18 months and 3 1/2 years, both of whom have stayed at home while Ethan has experienced his first camp!

one day in the media tent and volunteering his proofreading assistance each day. Josh and Derrick from IT who have remained good humoured and helpful throughout the week despite our contrary nature and technical challenges. Phil, the

Staff Catering God for providing us with take away lunches and dinners to allow us to work to deadlines without risk of starvation. Kate Snell for just being friendly and helpful however busy she is, and for organising some amazing activity

zones for us to write about. Finally, Alasdair, our boss who has been supporting The Daily Brew and what we hope it has delivered for months.

On WednesdayHere are a selection in response to WINGS on Wednesday:

We would just like to say a huge thanks for yesterday at WINGS. Jack had an absolutely

amazing time and was positively beaming last night when he came home.

He had to tell us there and then all the fantastic activities and events he had taken part in all day and all the amazing Scouts he had met from around the world!

We are so proud of all the things he has achieved so far being a Beaver and Cub, things which will help him to grow up to be a well-rounded young man.

It is fantastic that he has the opportunity to do so many things with you that he wouldn’t be able to experience anywhere else.

Fun For All Ages at WINGS2014

Tea With... BrendanAs one of the

more whacky activities on camp, extreme ironing takes the domestic chore to a whole new level.

After a brief practice, participants are sent on an obstacle course in which they clamber under a table, crawl through a net, and race towards the finish-line – all whilst clutching an iron and board. Michael, 15, of Slough Explorers said it was “a bit bizarre but really, really fun”.

Martin Fleetwood, Live It! zone director, explained that behind the silliness there lies a serious point: “It’s a valuable learning experience, ironing a shirt, and one that not all youngsters have had.”

Making the NewsD

uring WINGS2014 we have distributed 50,000 newspapers through eight issues of The Daily Brew.

Delivering papers every morning, our paper boys and girls have been asked most days - just how do you publish a newspaper in a field?

It starts with recruiting a great team of creative and hardworking writers and photographers. The Daily Brew team is 20 strong and includes experienced hands together with volunteers who are new to media production.

Each day we run about the WINGS2014 site searching out great features, interviewing and photographing as many participants and leaders as we can, but we’ve also been overwhelmed by all the fascinating stories delivered direct to the media tent by young people and adults alike.

Once our stories are written and our photos are taken we design the newspaper using professional

layout software before proof reading and sending the finished designs to print in Cambridge.

Our print deadlines have been as late as 11PM and The Daily Brew is printed at some point during the early hours of the morning and delivered daily.

Seeing people all over the site reading and engaging with The Daily Brew has been a genuine pleasure this week. We have tried to be creative, reflective and thoughtful with our content provoking conversation and debate whilst trying to to stay good humoured providing a light-hearted record of events at WINGS2014.

During the week we have been privileged to report on some truly exceptional stories. Speaking to visiting Guides from Ukraine, in the midst of the Ukraine-Russia conflict, showed us all how Scouting and Guiding can be a message for peace.

We met Holly, a young Guide who spent her first night under canvas at WINGS2014 and was helped

into a canoe on the Splash It! zone for her first ever experience afloat. The tremendous effort by volunteers at WINGS2014 to help all young people, no matter what ability, enjoy Scouting and Guiding to it's fullest is remarkable.

I would like to extend my personal thanks to the reporting team who have handled all of their stories with care and outstanding professionalism.

Bianca, Melissa, Joseph, Andrew, Lucy, Vicki and Chris have reviewed, previewed, considered and written in excess of 20,000 words.

I would also like to thank Lady Holland for being an exceptional co-editor, for her good humour and organising skills, particularly against a tight deadline!

Most of all, the team and I would like to thank you, our readers, for making our day by picking up The Daily Brew.
