AlphaSigmaNu(ASN),theInternationalJe-suitHonorSociety’sSpringHillChapter,seekstoiden-tifyitselfwiththestudentsaswellasthemissionandidentityofthecollege. InductionintoASNisthehighesthonorSpringHillCollegeconfersuponanundergraduatestudent.OnDec.2,2009,ASNhelditsinductionandwelcomed23newmembersandaspecialfacultyhonoree,Dr.MargaretDavis,tothehonorsociety.Therearecurrently34ASNmembersand four officers dedicated toserviceprojectsandprogramsthroughoutthecampusandcommunity. Theadministrationwantstorearrangehousingnextyear.Whilenothingissetinstoneasofyet,theplans will be made official soon,unlessstudentsbringforthsuggestions. Astheplansstandnow,upperclassmenwillbeabletochoosefromtheFairwayapartments,Mobile,NewHall,Walsh(doubles),O’Leary,andToolen(singles). Nextyear’sfresh-menwillliveinViraghandSkip’sPlaceinwhatarebeingcalled“LearningCommunities,”withthefreshmen overflow (if there are any) in one floor of
NewHall. Forthosethatdon’tknowwhatismeantby“LearningCommunities,”theyaresimplygroupsofstudentswholivetogether.Theadministrationplanstopickthecommunitiesbystudentinterests.HealthyLiving,forexample,couldbeacommunity.AgroupoffreshmeninterestedintheFineArtscouldbean-other.Theadministrationfeelsthesecommunitieswillbringmoresuccesstothestudents. Whensomeonethinksaboutafootballtown,Mobile,Ala.maynot be the first city that comestomind.Buteventhoughthiscitymaynotbeknownasafootballtown,tuckedawayonVirginiaStreetinMid-townMobileisthecity’sveryown“FieldofLeg-ends”thathasseensomeof the finest football tal-entinhistory. SpringHillCollegeactivelyengagesinthehealthcarereformdebatebyeducatingstudentstobecomecriticalthinkersontheissue. Inasmallandvo-calcircleofabout12,thestudentsinthehealthreformclassmeetwithateamofSpringHillprofes-sorstodiscussatopicthatseemsmoreimportantnowthaneverbefore.Theclassistaughtbyateamofprofessors:Dr.Ferryinphilosophyandtheology,Dr.BrandoninphilosophyandtheologyandDr.Landiinpoliticalscience.Theprofessors’objectiveforthestudentsistobuildawork-ingknowledgeaboutthehealthcaresystemsandthethreehealthcarepoliciesinquestionandtobecomecriticalthinkerswithamoralimagination.
Theultimategoal:Howcanwemakethingsbetter? Althoughhalfoftheclassconsistsofpre-healthmajors,theotherhalfisverydiverse—consistingofpoliticalscience,interna-tionalbusiness,secondaryeducationandavarietyofothermajors.Withthehealthcarereformdebatedominatingthenews,itisimportantforstudentsofeverydisciplinetohaveageneralknowledgeaboutthehealthcaresystem.Withadiverseteamofprofessors,thehealthcarereformclassisabletooffersomethingforeverydisci-pline. Theclassdiscussesthemoralissuesofeutha-nasia,empathyandthecommongood;thebusinessaspectsofmarkettheme,economics,andvaluebasecompetitions;combinedwithageneralknowledgeofthemythsandobstacles
involvedwhenplanningahealthcaresystem. Currentstudentandpre-medmajorSenyoAm-edothinksthattheclassisvitallyimportantforsome-oneaspiringtoworkinthemedical field, but also for anyonewishingtoeffective-lycontributeinthedebate.Amedostates,“Aftertak-ingthishealthcarereformclass,myhopeisthatI

The Spring Hill community raises money for Haiti relief efforts
SpringHillCollegehasraisedover$4,000toassistintherecoveryofthedisasterinHaiti,accordingtoMaureenBergan,DirectorofCampusMinistry. CampusMinistrysentoutane-mailtotheSpringHillCollegecommunityandsoliciteddonationsfromstudents,facultyandstafftoassistintheirfundraisingefforts.
Nearly$1,500indonationswasraisedthroughtheSt.JosephChapel’s“Poorbox.”TheDonnellyScholars, a program for first-generationcollegestudents,tookupcollectionsoutsidethecafeteriaforseveraldaysandraisednearly$600.
AtSpringHill’sMartinLutherKingMemorialcandlelightLiturgyandCelebration,thecampuscommunitycollectedalmost$200fortheHaitianProjectanditsschool,LouvertureCleary,accordingtoBergan.
“AiméeMaier,a1990alumnaewhoworkedattheschool
andisontheirboardoftrustees,contactedusaboutsupportingtheschool.LouvertureClearyservesverypoorstudents,buttheyareacademicallyhighachievingstudents,”saidBergan.“Becausetheschoolwasnotdamagedintheearthquake,ithasservedasafeedingcenterinHaiti.” OnJan.12,Haitiwasstruckbyamagnitude-7.0earthquake,thecountry’smostsevereearthquakeinover200years,accordingtoCNNreports.TheepicenterofthequakewasjustoutsidetheHaitiancapitalPort-au-Prince.Ithasbeenestimatedthatthedeathtollcouldreach200,000. Donationsarestillbeingtakenthroughvariouscharitableorganizations,includingtheAmericanRedCross,UNICEF,theYeleHaitiFoundationandtheHopeforHaitiNowFund,whichhasraisedmorethan$58millionwiththehelpofcelebrity-ledtelethononJan.22,accordingtoCNNreports.CelebritiesthatassistedinthetelethonincludedGeorgeClooney,
AliciaKeys,JustinTimberlake,andBeyoncé,accordingtoCNN. SpringHillfreshmanJasmineHilldonatedmoneythroughthetextmessagingserviceoftheYeleHaitiFoundation.“ItwasprettysimpletousetextmessagingtocontributetotheHaitidisasterrelief,andIwasmorethangladtoofferthehelp,”saidHill.
“Although,Iwasmorethanwillingtohelp,Idon’tthinkitwilleverbeenough.Yeah,moneycanhelpwithsomeoftheirproblems,buttheyneedmorethanmoneytohelpthememotionally.It’sjustatragicsituation,andIthinkthateveryoneshouldcontributetothereliefefforts,evenifit’sjustsendingupaprayer.Ithinkweshouldalldowhatwecan.” ProceedsfromfundraisingeffortsofSpringHillCollegewillgototheJesuitRefugeeServiceUSA,whichisaninternationalCatholicorganizationthataidsrefugees,forciblydisplacedpeoples,andasylumseekers,accordingtotheJesuitRefugeeServiceUSAWebsite.

Thisnovelthought,alongwithmanyothersoriginallyspokenbyDJPaulyD,hasstartedatrendinrealitytelevisionthathastakenthecountrybystorm:anybodyandeverybodycan
Change:notonlyisittheepitomeoflife,butitiswhatcollegeisallabout.Asasenior,IhavegonethroughsomanychangesatSpringHillthatit is difficult to think of themall.However,Ididn’tanticipatesomuchchangewhenIdecidedtocometoSHC,buttheimportantthingisthatIdidcome.Andsodidyou.Thisreasonunitesus. TheJesuittraditionofeducation,though,isprobablywhatdrewmostofustoSHC.Anoldheritagedriftsaboutintheairhereandwecanallfeelit.Welovethefactthatknowledgeanditsacquisitionisourmainfocus,andhasbeenSHC’sfocussincethestartofthisschool.Lately,though,therehavebeenmanychangesoncampusbothgoodandbad. WhenIarrived,Skip’swasunderconstruction.NewHallwasstillnew.Thepooleteriawasstillapool.Studentscoulddrinkwithoutfear.Also,Iwasgiventheopportunitytohaveasayinwhatthenewcampus

Personally,I’mlookinglessnowatthecampusandmoreaboutmyinnerchanges.Iwillneverforgetmyownchangesfromananti-socialfreshmantoaseniorwhoisconfident enough to move outintotheworldwhenIgraduatethisMay. this hill sat a fine institution, oneyoumightbefamiliarwith.It was the first in the land and certainly the first of its kind, specializingineducationwithanemphasisonspirituality.
Atthetimeofourtale,thecollegehadacquiredits22ndpresident,Fr.WilliamJ.TyrrellS.J.Hewasadelightfulmanundoubtedlyaddinghispersonalityandcharmtothecollege.Itwaslaterwrittenbyrespectedhistorian,CharlesJ.Boyle,that,“manyofhis[Fr.Tyrrell]achievementsservedtoreinforcetheCatholicentityofthecollege.”Afterspendingseveralyearslearningaboutthestudentsandgatheringin-
formationfromtheresidents,Fr.Tyrrelldecidedtobeginagrandproject,onethatwouldbringpeopleclosertoGodandlastforover100years.Hewastobuildagrottoandleadingtoitawonderfulpath.
Fr.Tyrrellhadaserioustrouble,however.Hehadn’tcollectedenoughresourcestoevenbeginsuchaproject.Luckily,therewasamanwhoknewthecollegewellandhewaswillingtoaidFr.Tyrrellinhisendeavor.HisnamewasMajorPatrickHan-non.MajorHannonsuppliedthecollegewithenoughsup-

Onthenoteofdisrespect,Idonotun-derstandwhyapastimeofmanypeopleoncampusisviolence.Notjustviolence,butoveralldisrespectforourcampus.SpringHillisthethirdoldestJesuitinsti-tutionintheUnitedStatesanditscampusisconsid-eredbymanytobeoneofthemostbeautiful. But what I find frus-tratingisthatIhavespentseveralmorningsontheweekend finding door deco-rationssprawledonthehallway floors while my flip flops become covered with cheap,oldbeerandwinebeforeIevenreachtheel-evator.Andtotopitall,themountainoftrashoutsidethetrashroomhasdoubledovernight.Notonlyisthegreasyboxfromweek-oldpizzakindofgrosstoopenmydoortoeverymorning,butthisheapofyourleft-oversispartofthereasonthatsomestudentshadtovacatetheirroomsinNewResidenceHallduetognats. Notonlyisthisdis-respectfultostudentsandyour‘family,’butalsotothestaffofSpringHillwhodili-gentlyworksothatwecanhaveacleanandcomfort-ableenvironmenttolivein. Lastweek,however,IcameacrossthelargestdisplayofdisrespectIhaveseenontheHillinquitesometime.Itispartofthereason I have finally writ-tenthis.Iwasattendinga

Reality television, not too real at all
EvenMTV’sThe Real World, in its first few seasons,didn’tseemtoencouragetherecklessanddownrightdisrespectfulbehaviorpromotedintheshowsof2008and2009.
Forthelastfewyears,itseemsasifthegoalofrealitytelevisionhasbeentomisleadandpersuadetheimpressionablemindsoftheyouthinAmerica.Theseshows,withoutrageousplotsandunrealisticstorylines,havecaptivatedyoungaudiencesaroundtheglobe,blurringlinesofperceptionandcreatingfalseimpressionsofrealityatrecordspeed.
Withtheseshowsgainingfansandpopularityeveryday,whatchoicedoesatelevisionproducerhave?Stickwiththefaux-realitytrendthathasprovensuccessorbeuniqueandcreatesomethingreal?Needlesstosay,dramaandexaggerationpaythebigbucks.Faux-realityitis.

Ifthepastisanyindicationofthefuture,Iamalittleafraidofthenonsensethatmightmakeitswayintoourtelevisionsintheyearstocome.Iknowthatmanypeopledoseethroughtheseridiculousshows’absurdities,buthowcanIbesosurethattheyoungerteenagersthattuneinhavethematurityittakestodecipherthe“reality”shownontelevision?
I’mnotsuggestingthatwecompletelyridourlivesofthe“showsthatmakeyoudumber,”asmybrother-in-lawlikestocallthem.Theyareentertaining,andquitefrankly,theymakemefeeljustalittlebitbetteraboutmyself.Sometimes,Ithinkitisagoodthingtotakeanhour-longescapefromlifeeachweekandtuneintosomeoneelse’s“reality.”
However,Ialsothinkitisimportantfortheyouthofsocietytorememberwhere“reality”endsandreallifebegins.Inreallife,itisnotcommontobe16andpregnant,haveateencriborbeateenmom.Iguessreallifeisnotinterestingenoughtobeshownontelevision,soitmustbeexaggerated.That’sunderstandable.However,Idolookforwardtoatimewhenarealityshowactuallydoeswhatitstitleimpliesanddepictssomethingreal.Butuntilthatdaycomes,IguessImustleave you with a fist pump, because“That’showtheShoregoes!”
wasdisappointed,sheknewthehis-toricalimportanceofthepath,butshewasaveteraninthiscommunityandshealsoknewthewaysofthoseincharge.Thelanewouldbereplacedofcourse;it was a high traffic area,butwhyripitupnow?Shewon-deredatwhatcostaninstitutionwouldpayforaconventional,modernroad,appar-entlyatthecostofahistoricallandmark.Shetalkedwithmanypeopleaboutthe

Peoplesayneverlivelifewithregrets,butisthatactuallywhatwedoandbelieve?Well,ifyoudon’tbelieveit,youhavewastedmostofyourliferegrettingsomethingyouhavedoneinyourpast. Iamoneofthosepeoplethatbelievethatevery-thinghappensforareason.Yeah,negativeeventstran-spireinourlivestomakeusquestionourveryexistence,butwhyregretwhathap-pened?Anegativesituationshouldalwaysbesomethingthatmakesyouquestionwhyyoudidwhatyoudid,anditshould make you fix the mis-takesfromyourpast. Usually,wecriticizepeoplefortheirpoordeci-sions,andweoftenneglectthepowerful,inspiring,andgreatthingstheyhaveac-complished.Forexample,WhitneyHoustonisoneofthegreatestsingersofourtime,butherpastdrugusehasoftenshadowedhermu-
siccareer.TigerWoodsisprob-
ablyoneofthegreatestgolfplayerstowalkthisearth,buthisaccomplishmentshavebeenoutshinedbyhisrecent…well,weknowthestory.ThelateMichaelJack-son’slifehasbeenplaguedwithstoriesofdruguseandmolestationcharges,despitebeingthegreatestpopsingerintheworld.BritneySpearsisoneofthegreatest…nevermind,IthinkIwenttoofarwentthatone.Butyougetthepoint.
Thepoordecisionsofthesecelebritieshaveplaguedthemforawhile,buttheypullthroughandallowthemselvestocontinuelivingtheirlifetothefullest.Whitneycamebackbetterthaneverwithherlatestalbum.MichaelJackson’sdeathresultedinmillionsmorealbumssoldandatelevisedmemorialservicethatcouldrivalthatofpastpresidents.I’msurethattigerWoodswillpullhimselfoutoftheholehedugforhimselftocontinuehisreignasthekingofgolf.
Iamsayingallofthisbecauseweshouldalldothesame.Weareallgoingtomakepoordecisionsinlife,butthosedecisionsshouldallowustopullourselvesuptoahigherpoint.
WhenIwasafresh-man,IadmitthatIthoughtcollegewasaplaceformetoletloose.IthoughtIwasabletodowhatIwantedtodobe-
causeIwasnolongerunderthe hold of my family. I defi-nitelyputmysociallifebeforebeingaSpringHillCollegestudent.Ofcourse,Ihitrockbottom,andpaidtheultimatepriceformybehavior.
Naturally,Ididnotlettheconsequenceskeepmedown.IcamebackabeastandIwasdeterminedtomakeitthrough.Now,myeducationalachievementshaveneverbeenbetterandIamproudofmyaccomplish-mentsatSpringHill.ImaynothavebeenthesmarteststudenttowalkSpringHill’scampus,butIwillputmyselfintheleagueofthemostde-termined.
Ofcourse,peoplesaidwhattheywantedtosayaboutmethen,andtheystillsaywhattheywanttosayaboutmenow;mebeinga fifth year student. But, I didn’tcarethenandIreallydon’tcarenow.UntiltheycanwalkinmyshoesandpullthemselvesoutofthestrugglesI’vepulledmyselfthrough,theycantaketheiropinionsandshoveitwheretheyfeelitisnecessary.
Ilookbackatevery-thingI’vebeenthroughthusfar,andIcanhonestlysaythatIamproudofmyself.Yeah,peopletalkaboutme,buttheirwordsarejustmymotivationtokeepgoingstronger.Ilookbackatmylifeupuntilthispoint,andIdon’tregretanything.Maybe,youshoulddothesame!

Later,somethesepictureswerepostedonFacebookforessentiallyanyonetosee.Iwillbehonest,ifIsawanyofthesepicturesuponFacebookoranyotheraspectoftheInternet,Iwouldprobablynothireanyoftheindi-vidualsinthepicturesandIwouldnothireanyone
personthatdressedsocon-troversially.Butwhythinkaboutthatwhenyouhaveyearsbeforethatworrybecomeslegitimate?Therearestillpeoplethatwerehighlyoffendedbythisperson’saction,andIjustwishforthirtysecondsthattheindividualhadthoughtabouthowoffensivetheywerebeing.Atnopoint,cananyoneassumethatjustbecauseweareintheSpringHillbubbledoesnotmeanthatpeoplecannotbeoffended. JuniorDanCriscioneandfreshmanAlanCorderacceptedbidsfromDeltaChionSaturdaywithsophomoreWilliamTillmanfollowingonSunday.DanCatalano,DirectorofExpansionandColonyOperations,andJustinSherman,DirectorofChapterServices,weretheprimarytoolsofrecruitmentforthisweek.Catalanoplanstotrainthefi rst two members of the SpringHillchapterofDeltaChitohelpthefraternityrecruitoverthenexttwoweeks.“DeltaChiaimstocreateanothervaluesbasedfraternalexperiencefortheundergraduatemenatSpringHill,”Catalanoexplained.
Theyarelookingtohavebetween30and40menbecomethecharterchapterofDeltaChiatSpringHill.Theirstandardsforthesemenarethattheyhavea2.9cumulativeGPAorhigherandareinvolvedoncampus.DeltaChiplanstorecruitusinganumberofdifferentmethodsthissemester.Predominantly,theyplantoofferthreescholarshipstonon-affi liated males on campus. “WealsotrytomeetasmanypeopleaswecanforthenexttwoupcomingweekssowecanbuildagreatfraternityatSpringHill,”saidCatalano. Badgers adventure into MobileEnglish professor decides to ride the tide
BadgersontheTown. Badgers on the Town will be holding several off-campus events in an effort to get SHC students out and about in Mobile. These events will range from fun events to cultural events and will be fi t for a college budget. Stallings hopes Badgers on the Town will encourage SHC students to “jump in to and see the exciting things around Mobile.” The fi rst Badgers ontheTownevent,SkateNight,washeldonThursday,Jan.14,atSunshineSkateCenter.Ticketsforthiseventwerefree.However,studentshadtoprovidetheirowntransportationtoandfromtheskatecenter. Withthearrivalofthespringsemester,theSpringHillBadgers’baseballteamwillembarkontheir2010seasonwithhighexpectations.Afteramediocre27-28recordlastseason,theBadgershopetoturnthingsaroundandgainnationalrecognitionwiththeleadershipoftheircaptainsRyanCummings,JustinHarrisonandBradHolstein. BradHolstein,junior first-baseman, hopeshiseffortscanhelptheBadgersthisseason.Holsteinaveraged.330attheplateandledtheteamwith12homerunsand64RBIslastseason.Afteranemergencypositionswapthatlandedhimatthirdbase,HolsteinearnedtheGCACGoldGloveaswellas finishing the year All GCACatthirdbase. Atshortstop,
sophomoreRyanCummingshopestosecure the infield with hisdefense.Cummingsiscomingoffastrongseasonwhereheaveraged.315witheightdoubles,
fourtriples,andfourhomeruns.Defensively,Cummingsclosedoutmanytightinningsturning28doubleplayslastseason. TheBadgersreturnanotherGCACGoldGlove
in centerfield with senior JustinHarrison.Harrisoniscomingoffanexcellentseason,committingonlyoneerrorin111chances.Attheplate,Harrisonhit.327,adding50runswith
25RBIs.HarrisonalsoledtheBadgerswithhisfeet,successfulsnagging24stolenbases. AccompanyingHarrison in the outfield isseniorRyanHallinright field. Hall led the
teamwitha.365battingaverageand20stolenbases.Hallalsopostedaschoolrecordlastyearbyscoring56runsinaseason. Thesecondhalfwas,asAthleticDirectorJimHallsays,“thewayallSpringHillsportingeventsshouldbe.”TheBadgersfoundthemselvesbehindbyasmanyas9pointsinthesecondhalf,butralliedbackto74-72with0.6secondsleft.SeniorOwenMcNallygotfouledwhilegoingforalayup,sendinghimtothelinefor2freethrows.FirstShot.Swish!Second
