Never cook anything, or use anything sharp, hot or electrical without an adult there to help you.

Before you touch anything electrical, such as plugs, sockets or blenders, make sure your hands are dry. If they are wet, you could give yourself an electric shock.

Before you start cooking, always give your hands a good wash with soap and clean your work surfaces.

Hot pots and pans should always be placed on a heatproof mat or stand.

Make sure the handles of saucepans aren’t sticking out from the cooker so no-one can knock against them.

Bacteria (also known as germs) are everywhere and sometimes food can have some on it that might make you or the people you’re cooking for, ill. So always wash fruit and vegetables before you use them and wash your hands, knife and chopping board when you’ve been handling raw fish or meat.

Always clean and tidy as you work, keep a cloth close by and mop up any spills.

Read the recipe all the way through before you shop for the ingredients and before you start cooking. Make a shopping list, and then ask an adult to check it for you because you might have some of the ingredients already.

Take extra care weighing and measuring ingredients: if you rush this, it’s easy for your recipe to go wrong. Make sure you have a set of measuring spoons and kitchen scales too.

Don’t rush, it’s better for the food to be a little late than taste bad. If you put love and care into your cooking it actually makes the food taste better!

Have fun and enjoy yourself!
