Introduction: AAG 2009 Nystrom Competition Paper

The article in this section comes from the2009 Nystrom Competition. The competition,sponsored by a fund established by J. WarrenNystrom, Executive Director of the Associationof America Geographers (AAG) from 1966 to1979, awards annual prizes for papers based onrecent dissertations in geography. Participationin the competition is restricted to persons whohave received their doctorates within the previ-ous three years and were AAG members duringthose years.

The competition occurs in two stages. Ap-plicants who wish to participate in the com-petition submit papers to the AAG’s NystromAward Review Committee. The 2009 Commit-tee was chaired by Antoinette WinklerPrins.Committee members included Kevin Archer,Rich Dixon, Rheyna Laney, Delphis Levia,Douglas Richardson, Lydia Savage, and Terry

Young. The committee selected a group of fi-nalists whose papers were judged meritoriousfor presentation in special sessions at the 2009annual meeting. Finalists’ papers were thenjudged on the following criteria: originality ofideas and potential contribution to the advance-ment of knowledge in particular subfields of thediscipline, clarity and effectiveness of the writ-ten paper, and quality and effectiveness of theoral presentation.

After the meeting all the presenters were in-vited to submit their papers for publication inThe Professional Geographer. One paper was sub-mitted, which was then sent out to reviewersfollowing the same procedures as with all sub-missions. Following revisions, this paper wasaccepted for publication. We are pleased tocontinue the tradition of presenting Nystrompapers in The Professional Geographer.
