2 GettingStarted

Installationandserviceofthisapplianceshouldbeperformedbyqualifiedpersonnel.Hearth&HomeTechnologies suggestsNFI certified or factorytrainedprofessionals,ortechnicianssupervisedbyanNFIcertifiedprofessional(www.nficertified.org).

A. DesignandInstallationConsiderationsHeat&Glodirect vent gasappliancesaredesigned tooperatewithallcombustionairsiphonedfromoutsideofthebuildingandallexhaustgasesexpelledtotheoutside.Noadditionaloutsideairsourceisrequired.InstallationMUSTcomplywith local,regional,stateandnationalcodesandregulations.Consultinsurancecarrier,localbuildinginspector,fireofficialsorauthoritieshavingjurisdiction over restrictions, installation inspection andpermits.Beforeinstalling,determinethefollowing:• Wheretheapplianceistobeinstalled.• Theventsystemconfigurationtobeused.• Gassupplypiping.• Electricalwiringrequirements.• Framingandfinishingdetails.• Whetheroptionalaccessories—devicessuchasawallswitchorremotecontrol—aredesired.

C. Inspect Appliance and Components• Carefullyremovetheapplianceandcomponentsfromthepackaging.

• Theventsystemcomponentsanddecorativedoorsandfrontsmaybeshippedinseparatepackages.

• If packaged separately, themedia, refractory, and/oroptionallogkitsmustbeinstalled.

• Reporttoyourdealeranypartsdamagedinshipment,particularlytheconditionoftheglass.

• Readalloftheinstructionsbeforestartingtheinstal-lation.Followtheseinstructionscarefullyduringtheinstallationtoensuremaximumsafetyandbenefit.

B. Clearances to CombustiblesWhenselectingalocationfortheapplianceitisimportanttoconsidertherequiredclearancestowalls.SeeFigure3.5andFigure3.6.WARNING! Risk of Fire or Burns! ConstructingtheApplianceChaseAchaseisaverticalbox-likestructurebuilttoenclosethegasapplianceand/oritsventsystem.Incoolerclimatestheventshouldbeenclosedinsidethechase.NOTICE: Treatment of ceiling firestops and wall shield firestops and construction of the chase may vary with the type of building. These instructions are not substitutes for the requirements of local building codes. Therefore, you MUST check local building codes to determine the requirements to these steps.Chasesshouldbeconstructed in themannerofallout-sidewallsofthehometopreventcoldairdraftingprob-lems.The chase should not break the outside buildingenvelopeinanymanner.Walls,ceiling,baseplateandcantileverfloorofthechaseshould be insulated. Vapor and air infiltration barriersshouldbeinstalledinthechaseasperregionalcodesfortherestofthehome.Additionally,inregionswherecoldairinfiltrationmaybeanissue,theinsidesurfacesmaybesheetrockedandtaped(oranequivalentmethodmaybeused)toachievemaximumairtightness.

This section discusses installation details associatedwith the Inside andOverlap Fit methods and specifiesadditionalnon-combustiblematerialsrequired.Whenfinishingthewallaroundthefireplace,itiscriticalthatwallsheathingbefastenedproperly.Wallsheathingfasteners,suchasscrewsornails,arenotpermitted insomelocations.SeeFigure10.1.It is acceptable to pre-drill holes and use self-tappedscrews in the factory-installed non-combustible boardwhichmay be used to lathe (a backer for tile,marble,etc.).Screwsbeinginstalledthroughthefactory-installednon-combustibleboardshouldbeself-tappingtypewithamaximumlengthof2in.(51mm)SeeFigure10.1.Wheninstallingfinishmaterialonthelowercoverpanel,DO NOT drill or install screws longer than one inch.Screws longer thanone inchcouldpenetrate the lowercoverpanelcausingdamagetocomponentsorpenetratethegasline.Oneinchscrewsareincludedinthemanualbagassembly thatare intended forusewhenattachingfinishingmaterialtolowercoverpanel.SeeFigure10.1.

When installinggypsumwallboardaroundthefire-place,installtheholeforthefireplaceopeninginasinglewallboardsheet,ifpossible.Thiswillminimizethejointsadjacenttothefireplaceopening.Tapewallboardjointsaroundthefireplaceopeningwithfiberglass-meshtape.Itwillprovideamorecrack-resis-tant joint than paper tape. Fill, smooth and finishwalljointswithchemicallysetting-typejointcompound.Itwillprovideamorecrack-resistantjointthanair-dryinglight-weightcompound.PaintingIfdesiredfinishingincludesapaintedwall,100%acryliclatexwithcompatibleprimerisrecommendedaroundthisappliance.Oil-basedorstandardacrylicpaintsmaydis-colorduetoheatexposure.

Spread themediaoutover paper towels and allow the media to dry beforeinstallingthemintothefireplace.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Aftertheinitialstartupburn,itmaybenecessarytoadjustthemediaplacementtoachievethebestflameappearance.Whileflameheightvariationisnormal,theremayappeartobehigherpeaksinsomeareasandlowflamepeaksinotherareas.
