Theme: Sustainable tourism for development

To most people, “sustainable” is synonymous with “eco-friendly.” They think of

geothermal-powered hotels, conservation efforts, and companies concerned with their

carbon footprints.

And it’s true that being environmentally-conscious is a big part of being sustainable.

But it’s not the only thing to consider. An attraction or destination can be as “green” as

green can be, and still not be sustainable.

When it comes to sustainability, there are actually three “pillars” to consider:

environmental, economic, and socio-cultural. Tourism has to be sustainable in all three

areas to truly be considered “sustainable tourism.”

Research on the above theme and do the following tasks in A4 size sheets.

Q.1 Our environment is an important aspect of our tourism industry. Write a letter to the

Environment Minister suggesting ways to preserve the natural environment (such as beaches,

forests, waterways) and the built environment (such as historic buildings and ruins) and to

make them environmentally sustainable

Q.2 You are the Tourism Minister of your state. You have recently witnessed increased

congestion and overcrowding in your city, an increase in crime, and an introduction of new

languages and values, and perhaps even an influx of migrant workers to be employed in the

tourist industry.

Write an inspiring speech to be delivered in a summit that you are going to attend in a

neighbouring state, suggesting ways to minimize these negative impacts and focusing on

more positive ones, such as promoting cultural exchange and preserving local traditions so

that the locals of your city are able to see tourism in a more positive light.

Q.3 Many people don’t take into account economics when thinking about sustainability, but

it’s really the key to making a tourism venture sustainable. You have seen a spurt of hotels

owned and operated by foreigners, and this is not likely to contribute much to the local

economy.

As a concerned citizen of the society, create a poster to promote economic sustainability in

tourism. Through visuals and slogans, highlight ways to involve the community and sharing

in the financial benefits gleaned from it.

SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS

As per the World Tourism Organisation, "Tourism that takes full account of its current and

future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the

industry, the environment and host communities" is termed as Sustainable Tourism.

For the development of Sustainable Tourism, informed participation of all the relevant

stakeholders as well as strong political leadership is required. To achieve sustainable tourism,

constant monitoring of impacts is necessary; this will ensure that we know the results of the

procedures which are being followed, and also preventive and/or corrective measures are

taken whenever necessary.

Sustainable Tourism consists of three kinds:

1. Medical Tourism

2. Education Tourism

3. Business Tourism

On any one of the above kinds of tourism, perform the following activities:

i. Collect Mathematical data to compare the growth in the last decade (eg. Changes in

the tourists over the last decade, tourists’ countries, top Indian destination cities for

the tourists etc.)

ii. On the basis of the collected Mathematical data, make a graphical representation and

analyse the changes in the last decade

iii. How can we improve the given kind of tourism in India keeping in mind the

sustainable development

NOTE: Your project should be presented under the following heads

1. Objectives

2. Collection of mathematical data

3. Data interpretation

4. Conclusion (highlighting action plan which serves as a beginning for sustainable

future)

SUBJECT: PHYSICS/ CHEMISTRY/ BIOLOGY/

BIOTECHNOLOGY

Scientific Tourism

Scientific Tourism covers interests in visiting and exploring scientific landmarks, including

museums, laboratories, observatories and universities. With globalization, ‘Scientific

Tourism’ has become the backbone of the economy of a country. One can see the case of

USA where millions of people travel every year to attend a camp at Kennedy Space Centre to

get inspired to become an astronaut! Another example is CERN Laboratory in Geneva.

Select the most famous Scientific destination of any two of the following fields: Physics,

Chemistry, Biology and Biotechnology, in India and

Task 1: Make a report/survey/case study on the selected destination in the following format:

• Name of the Scientific destination

• Location of the destination

• Number of tourists visiting annually – students/researchers/science enthusiasts

• A brief outline on area of specialization/research of the chosen Scientific

destination

• How does this place support the economy of the country

Task 2: Design two activity kits/experiments/prototypes from the following fields: Physics,

Chemistry, Biology and Biotechnology; which are related to the curriculum or day-to-day life

and can be used to develop scientific temper and innovation among the peer students.

You may compile the write up of the activity kits/experiments/prototypes in the following

format: -

• What do you have to do? (statement of the problem)

• What is required? (Materials, etc.)

• What do you need to know? (previous knowledge)

• How will you proceed? (experimental procedure)

• What have you observed? (Observation)

• What you have learnt? (Conclusion/Analysis)

• What you would you be interested in doing (in the near future)? (Follow

up/Research)

SUBJECT: PSYCHOLOGY

Collect newspaper cutting, information from internet, magazines, journals, etc. related to

human psychology and behavior.

With the help of these collected information and news, prepare a newsletter of 4 sides of A4

sheets. Give a relevant name to your newsletter

OR

Accompanied by your parent, visit a psychologist after taking appointment for conducting

his/ her interview. Prepare beforehand a set of questions to be asked. A sample of questions

could be:

1. What kind of interest and aptitude are needed to be in this profession?

2. What qualification do you have and from which institution?

3. What is your specialization?

4. Why did you choose this field only?

5. What is your work schedule? How long have you been practicing?

6. What are the jobs available after studying Psychology?

7. Which University/ College would you recommend for a student wishing to pursue

the same profession?

8. What are the challenges involved in this profession? Present your report in a

folder containing A4 size sheets.

1. “Motivations, choice of destinations and experiential values of a holiday are linked to

consumer values in tourism” (Crick- Furman Prentice, 2000)

Knowledge of consumer psychology and consumer behaviour in relation to tourism is

valuable in determining the success of tourism and hospitality ventures. Much of our choices

on favourite destinations for vacations depend on our personal motivations to travel. By

taking into account the psychological research of motivational and emotional experiences and

encompassing travel and tourism, you, the budding psychologists of class 11, would be able

to present the feedback and suggestions which could be helpful to know more about the

psychology of tourist. This maybe valuable for enhancing sustainable tourism.

Administer this questionnaire on 10 people of (5 males and 5 females) in the age group 30 to

45 years age group. Prepare a summary of your findings using A4 size sheets. After the

vacations all the students to share their data. An overall summary and conclusion to be

provided at the end. Prepare A4 size folder to present your work.

Activity 1-

Refer to books, magazines and the internet with a focus on any decade in the 20th Century

(e.g. Jazz age of 1920s, Hippie era of 1960s, Punk fashion of 1980s etc)

Find articles and photographs of the overall ‘look’ of the selected decade e.g. art,

architecture, cars, furniture and other lifestyle products. Focus on the details of clothes

(fabrics, silhouettes, colors and prints) and accessories (watches, bags, shoes)

Find visuals of Indian and international runway shows (within the last 3 years) where the

collections are inspired by the selected decade but re-interpreted anew.

Label the visuals on sheets co-relating similarities and differences in design between the

original fashion and its contemporary interpretation. Write a note analyzing the Fashion

Cycle (e.g. Cycle within Cycle, Recurring Cycle) of the ‘look’. Make a presentation.

Activity 2-

Select any one Indian or western item of clothing worn by a large segment of the population

(e.g. jeans, salwar-kameez, saris etc.)

Refer to magazines and the internet to find visuals of Indian or International shows (within

the last 2-5 years) where this item of clothing has been featured. Focus on the design

variations of this item of in terms cut, fit, fabrics, colors, prints to identify the salient features.

Find visuals of this garment recording the changes it has gone through within the last 2-5

years.

Write a brief note with pictures analyzing the pendulum Swing and make a presentation.
