The Class of 2018 is a superb group of student leaders chosen for both their high academic achievements as well as their commitment to engagement through meaningful extracurricular activities.

More emphasis is now placed on interview ratings and demonstrated commit-ment to CNU during the holistic application review process than in years past.

As we strive to transform hearts and minds, we celebrate the values inherent in the liberal arts and sciences. Students come first at CNU, and we are deeply committed to the outstanding young men and women who bring our campus alive with their energy, enthusiasm and intellect. CNU students lead lives of significance, and as they demonstrate exceptional leadership both in and out of the classroom, we applaud their extraordinary accomplishments.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMSPRESIDENT’S LEADERSHIP PROGRAM (PLP) As part of PLP, each leadership student earns a minor in leadership studies. This program equips students to become great leaders for the 21st century by uniquely integrating academic study, civic engagement and personal development. Each student will receive an annual $1,000, $2,000 or $5,000 residential scholarship (including a study abroad stipend), as well as priority housing in a PLP learning community, and priority course registration.

HONORS PROGRAM

This unique program allows students to customize their CNU academic experience with their personal and professional aspirations by sharply reducing the liberal learning core requirements. The program features stimulating interdisciplinary seminars and challenges students by means of study abroad, independent research, internships, jobs and volunteer experience relevant to their passions. Each student will receive an annual $2,000 or $5,000 residential scholarship (including a study abroad stipend), as well as priority housing in an Honors learning community, and priority course registration.

Admission is selective, and we anticipate receiving 8,000 applications for only 1,200 spaces in the fall 2015 freshman class. We place great emphasis on high school curriculum and look with favor on Honors, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and dual-enrollment courses. We also seek students who demonstrate leadership, a commitment to service, exemplary talents and diverse experiences.

NEW ON CAMPUSNearly $1 billion in new construction over the last 18 years has created a beautiful campus with world-class facilities.

CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT HALLScheduled for a May 2015 completion, Christopher Newport Hall is quickly taking shape. Here students will have access to all of the resources that impact the quality and success of their undergraduate experience as they move from admission to graduation. Offices will include Registrar, Financial Aid, Hous-ing, Academic Success, Admission, Study Abroad, Student Success, Student Accounts/Cashier, Payroll, Business Office, Alumni Relations and University Events, Institutional Research, Internal Audit, Planning and Budget, and the executive offices.

BELL TOWER CNU’s Bell Tower, completed spring 2014, clears the way to build rich traditions around special events, including athletic victories and commencement. Each spring our newest graduates will have the opportunity to ring the bell in celebra-tion. The new Bell Tower features the bell from the SS United States, a gift from the late Dr. Sarah Forbes, CNU friend and benefactor, as well as a clock and a carillon. The plaza includes an exedra, Greek for a semicircular seating area, which provides an outdoor venue for classes while serving as a place to honor faculty and staff who have served CNU through the years.

JOSEPH W. LUTER, III HALLNewly opened in fall 2013, Luter Hall houses the Luter School of Business, as well as the Departments of Economics; Sociology, Social Work and Anthropol-ogy; Leadership and American Studies; Mathematics; and Physics, Computer Science and Engineering. Luter Hall is the largest academic building on our campus and includes classrooms, laboratories, lecture spaces, faculty offices, a boardroom, a trading room and incomparable technology resources.

NEW RESIDENCE HALLSWarwick River Hall, opened fall 2012, houses 500 sophomores in four-person suites. Rappahannock Hall opened in fall 2013, providing 500 private bed-rooms and baths with reserved parking for upperclassmen.

POPE CHAPELCNU’s Pope Chapel opened to the community in February 2013. Welcoming people of all faiths, the 10,000-square-foot building stands at the entrance to the University and enriches campus life through spiritual activities, lectures, musical performances and other special events.

MARY BROCK FORBES HALL CNU’s integrated science center, completed August 2011, is an $80 million facility that includes 160,000 square feet for cutting-edge education and discov-ery as faculty and students collaborate on groundbreaking research. Forbes Hall houses the Departments of Molecular Biology and Chemistry, Organismal and Environmental Biology, and Psychology.

FREEMAN CENTER EXPANSIONThe Freeman Sports and Convocation Center expansion, completed summer 2011, doubled the size of the Trieshmann Health and Fitness Pavilion and added an auxiliary gymnasium. The facility provides offices for Counseling Ser-vices and University Health and Wellness Services. Additionally, it houses a new 400-seat Gaines Theatre and an array of meeting rooms for student activities.

OUR FACULTYMore than half of our classes have 19 or fewer students, giving students direct access to experts in their fields — teacher-scholars who provide outstanding instruction, conduct groundbreaking research, and publish books and articles within their areas of expertise. Our professors’ passion is teaching, and students enjoy the intellectual challenge of working with them. Nearly 90 percent of our faculty hold a PhD or highest degree in their fields. Our professors were called “dedicated and caring” in a Washington Post survey.

ADMISSION EVENTS AND TOURS

Forbes magazine recently named Christopher Newport one of the top

CNU RANKINGS

U.S. News & World Report has selected Christopher Newport as one of America’s “up-and-

20 colleges for minorities in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and math. Forbes ranked CNU fourth, calling it one of the institutions “getting it right” — ahead of MIT and many other great schools.

coming schools to watch” for making the “most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, student life, campus and facilities.” CNU was also named a top regional university in the South and a top regional public university.

The Best 367 Colleges: 2014 EditionCNU is listed as one of the nation’s best institutions for undergraduate education. Only 15 percent of the col-

leges in the nation are accorded this distinction.

The Best Value Colleges for 2014The Princeton Review selected 75 public schools and 75 pri-vate colleges based on campus culture, facilities, academics, the cost of attending and how much financial aid is provided to students. Only 150 schools in America — just 5 percent — are named as a Best Value.

CNU was praised for its high-quality academic offerings and abundance of extracurricular activities. The Princeton Review profile of CNU reads: “There’s a palpable excitement for this relatively new school. The teachers take a personal interest in their students, and there are many opportunities for students to take the lead on projects, shape their educa-tion and become campus and community leaders.” Much like the academic buildings, the residence halls and campus are called “breathtaking.” CNU is also described as having a wonderful sense of community and a family-like atmosphere.

CNU is ranked in the top 100 public institutions by Kiplinger’s

Personal Finance in its “Best Values in Public Colleges.” Kiplinger’s ratings are based on a combination of academics and affordability. Institutions ranked in Kiplinger’s “Top 100 Best Values in Public Colleges, 2014” are praised for their ability to “deliver a great education at prices that put private schools to shame.”
