Preliminary observations: What we observed, and what we wanted to investigate

• After choosing HighLine as our public space, we investigated the site and decided we wanted to investigate if we could come up with a project to make people communicate with each other on our chosen spot in the park.

• Our project was focused on finding a creative solution about iterating the usage of HighLine park by the public.

• Our main concern was to find an idea that would work with the park’s characteristics.

• Nina Katchadourian’s “Office Semaphore”

• In Office Semaphore; The Artist made people put different objects that wouldexpress their daily feelings on their officewindows and observed how people were feeling below, using a telescope.

First Prototype: The Basic Homemade Telephone : Failure!

It was both hard to hear the voice and

was impossible to see the other person.

The string is too long, blocking the traffic.

The string touching the walls stopped the vibration; therefore

the sound wasn’t clear.

•Hidden in cans, it’s wireless•Making sound clear•People can talk and see each other

Improvement!

1\the walkie talkies are obvious interface in that area, it is easy to call people's attention.

2\everybody know how to use it, somebody has the automatic motion to try and talk

3\when someone tried first, it called up curiosity of people passing by, and more people stepped by and checked it out.

4\ once they talked with the walkie talkies and get respons from the other side, they were very excited and had strong willings to talk with strangers.

problem:sometimes people picked up the phone and say something there is nobody in the other side.

For the final; we will be hiding the walkie talkies in cans to make them look like homemade telephones.

Final User Testing: Walkie Talkies worked!

Everything worked fine except for our thunder was stolen at first..
