Welcome to the Sheffield and Rotherham Golden Years Roadshow. We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our exhibitors and visitors

at the event. A special ‘thank you’ is reserved for our sponsors Specsavers, St. Luke’s Hospice and Rotherham Hospice who have worked very hard behind the scenes to help make the day fun, entertaining and hopefully a big success. Above all we have tried to make the event ‘local and community based’, while still being fun and informative. To the exhibitors ‘thank you’ for having faith in the Golden Years Roadshow Event and been prepared to try something new which is growing and developing.

Should you have any opinions or new ideas to help improve the road shows, please feel free to email us at [email protected] with your comments. Equally should you wish to be involved with future events also drop us a line at the same email address. The team would love to speak to you.

To the visitors, a great big ‘thank you’ as without you this would all be pointless. We hope that you will be able to take something away from today’s event whether it is a new found love for ‘Zumba’, or even a better understanding of what you need to do to improve your finances.

Some of you may even be going home with prizes? Be sure to try the treasure hunt, the quiz zone, and the balloon race! All are offering free prizes and a bit of fun on both floors of the exhibition.

We would also like to say a ‘thank you’ to all the exhibitors who have tried to raise much needed funds for both Hospices at the exhibition. They have been the inspiration for this event, and we do hope that the event has managed to raise a nice amount of funds for both the hospices.

A big ‘thank you’ to Sheffield United Football Club for asking one of their players to attend the event.

Please make sure you spin the roulette wheel before you go home as all proceeds are again going to both Hospices.

‘Thank you’ additionally goes to Bianca Silcock and the G-Casino team for all their hard work.

Finally a ‘big thank you’ to all of the staff, volunteers and management who have worked tirelessly to make this event the success we hope it will be.

The next Roadshow event will be held in Leeds in September so if you would like to come along or know someone who does please feel free to contact the Golden Years Roadshow staff.

there are many things to look forward to as you enter the golden years of your life and ensuring your sight and hearing is in tip top condition to enjoy these

moments should be a priority. Specsavers Opticians and Hearcare at Crystal Peaks offer

comprehensive sight tests and free of charge hearing screening to ensure your eyes and ears are looked after.

The hearing screener produces tones at different sound levels which can identify hearing difficulties. The results of the screener are instantaneous and patients who are showing symptoms of hearing loss are referred to Claire von Anrep, registered hearing aid audiologist at Specsavers at Crystal Peaks.

Claire von Anrep says: ‘The hearing screener is a free service we offer to all our customers in order for them to take a pro-active role in their hear care.

‘Most people experience some form of hearing loss in their mid 70s and anyone over the age of 50 should certainly have a hearing a test. There are approximately 700,000 profoundly deaf people in the UK and in many situations a hearing aid

can dramatically improve a hard of hearing person’s quality of life.’

Gil Vasey, Director of Specsavers at Crystal Peaks added: “We recommend that you have a sight test every two years. Regular bi-annual sights tests allows us to monitor if there have been any changed to your eye sight and amend prescriptions accordingly.

“As you get older, you may often find that you are reaching for your reading glasses more than you used to or you are straining your eyes to read things you had previously been able to see with ease – these are all key indicators that you need a sight test.

“A sight test also has additional health benefits as they can detect underlying health issues like diabetes and glaucoma.

“Ensuring your sight and hearing tests are up to date are not always high on people’s priority lists, however maintaining your everyday healthcare really can make a big difference to your quality of life.To make an appointment at Specsavers at Crystal Peaks call 0114 251 3111.

rotherham hospice is an independent charity commissioned by NHS

Rotherham to deliver care through a range of services to people affected by a terminal illness. Our dedicated team of staff and volunteers work together to provide high quality care that includes physical, psychological, social and spiritual support. This care

helps patients, their families, and carers achieve the very best quality of life and personal experience, both at home and in the Hospice.

Rotherham Hospice is not just a building – it’s a way of caring for people both in the Hospice and the community. Our care places the patient and not the illness at the centre of everything we do.

Rotherham Hospice needs £4.2 million a year to provide all these services and the NHS funding provides less than 50% of this money. We need to raise over £2 million a year through voluntary support. That is £5,500 a day! Every day of the year! Rotherham Hospice is therefore dependent upon the generous support

of people, businesses, and organisations in Rotherham for this support and to whom we are very grateful. For more information on our services, or how you can get involved with fundraising ring 01709 308900, or visit our website; www.rotherhamhospice.org.uk

LEAVING A WILL

8 GOLDEN YEARS ROADSHOW • AUGUST 2012

With an increase of 6.4% on the previous year, it’s becoming evident that more and more people are dieing without a will.

The pace of 21st Century living, together with increased life expectancy makes it easy to understand why many put off future planning and there are a wealth of reasons why people simply never get round to it:• Manyfindithardtodiscusshowtheirfamilywillcopeafter

they’re gone; • Manyfinditdifficulttodivideassetsbetweenlovedones;• Manysimplydon’tbelievetheyhaveanyonetoleavetheir

estate to.Whatever the reason, the sad fact is that many leave it too late.

For those who pass away without a will or ‘intestate,’ their assets usually follow the rules of intestacy. This means that certain family members can benefit from an estate which may not necessarily be the wish of the deceased.

Following a more complex administration procedure and often increased legal fees, the courts will grant letters of administration to an administrator. It is the administrator’s role

to decide how the estate is divided. On occurrences where the next of kin cannot be found or

simply don’t exist the estate can be broken down, creditors paid and the rest left to the treasury.

Genealogy detectives, made famous by the BBC’s Heir Hunters, search public records to pick out larger estates. Their role is to locate living beneficiaries and notify them of their inheritance before anybody else has chance.

This may sound like a generous system however detectives often charge healthy sums for the service which could be avoided if a thorough will was in place.

Making sure your wishes are met once you pass is paramount to peace of mind. Making a will can be an incredibly rewarding process and saves families from the added pressure of distributing an estate at a difficult time.

We offer a free will review, giving you the time to discuss your will and ensure your wishes are still being met. We can also advise on Lasting Powers of Attorney and Care Fee planning too.Why not visit us at our stand or call 0114 256 1560 to book your appointment?

Who is entitled to an Intestate Estate?Last year the Government’s Bona Vacantia Division dealt with 28,000 cases where someone died without leaving a will. As a result the Treasury benefited from £37.7million in unclaimed estates.

the nhs BoWel Cancer Screening Programme offers screening every two years to all men and women

aged 60 to 74 and registered with a GP. People over 75 can request a screening kit by calling 0800 707 60 60.

People who take part in the programme will be sent a simple to use home test kit with full instructions. The test involves collecting a small sample from three separate bowel motions and returning the kit to the laboratory in a specially designed pre paid envelope. The samples will be analysed and results will be provided within two weeks.

Most people screened will have a normal result. People who have an abnormal result will be invited to an appointment with a specialist screening nurse to discuss having further investigations. Around 40% of people with an abnormal screening result will be found to have polyps (small clumps of abnormal cells which may develop into cancer), which can be removed easily. Only about 10% of people requiring further investigation will have cancer. Often this is at an early stage when it can be much more easily and successfully treated. For more information on the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme please freephone 0800 707 60 60 or visit the website www.cancerscreening.nhs.uk/bowel/

Checking for Bowel CancerBowel cancer is one of the biggest cancer killers in the UK. It affects more than one in 20 people and kills more than 16,000 each year, yet it is one of the most treatable forms of cancer if detected early.

B a t h r o o m sBathing is an integral part of daily life for everyone and is necessary to maintain health and well being. Whilst many people are able to use a standard bathroom here at Enable we appreciate that there are times when bathing becomes difficult due to reduced mobility or through physical impairment. We are able to design and install an individually designed bathrooms and wetrooms to meet your specific needs, and allow continued independent living.

After your initial enquiry an appointment will be made for a home visit to meet with you and discuss your needs and requirements.

When designing a special needs bathroom or wetroom we take into account the extent of a person’s disability, location and size of the existing area and the needs of other users. We also understand that some people are unable to bathe without the assistance of another person or carer. This too is taken into consideration at the design stage.

It takes time to become an expert in anything. We at Enable feel that over 30 years experience in the industry and hard work gives you the right to claim that you’re an expert.

During this time we have earned many repeat customers and compliments for a job well done.

CHARITY

14 GOLDEN YEARS ROADSHOW • AUGUST 2012

WRVS in SheffieldWrVs is an age positive

charity. Our volunteers deliver personal and

practical support to help older people and we raise awareness of the issues older people face through our campaigns and research. Help us make Britain a great place to grow old by volunteering or donating.

We have shops and cafes in three different Sheffield Hospital sites, The Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Weston Park Hospital and The Northern General Hospital. These shops and cafes provide refreshments and good to hospital patients, visitors and staff and can be very busy places. Every penny we raise goes back into the hospital to provide better services and into the local community to help older people. We need volunteers of all ages to help us to run these shops.

At the northern General, as well as the shops and cafes we also run an On Ward Volunteer service.

How we can HelpOur specially trained volunteers are able to provide support to help improve the quality of life for both the patient and in some cases, the carer. For example through • Befriending • Reading • Dementia friendly support • Carers support • Information and signposting to other organisations and agencies. On a practical level we also provide personal support such as: • Encouraging to eat and drink • Helping patients to

keep mobile • Ensuring regular visits • Keeping a log of activities done so families and carers can keep in touch while they are not there. All our volunteers receive specialist training to enable them to support older patients with dementia in a positive, practical and appropriate way, using Alzheimer’s Society guidelines. This service started as a one-year pilot project last November. Our volunteers have done such an excellent job so far, we have been asked to extend the service already! So we need lots more volunteers to work in this area. This service is much more flexible and allows for anyone over 16 to come and train with us and gain experience.

Lastly, in Sheffield we run a Good Neighbours service. Similar to the On Ward Service but we visit people in their own homes. Again, this service was given 6 months to set up in your area, the demand has grown so much for this kind of service in your area, and we need volunteers to help deliver.

This service is similar to the On Ward service in that we can offer:• Befriending • Collect prescriptions • Signposting to other organisations • Help getting out and about • Help getting to appointments • Dementia support

Anyone interested in volunteering for WRVS should visit www.wrvs.org.uk or call 0845 601 4670. You can also visit: https://www.facebook.com/#!/wrvscommunity http://twitter.com/#!/wrvs, drop them an email at: [email protected] or call: 01142 611709

GoinG alonG to see a solicitor is one of those things that people put off doing. We see people every week who say that they have been intending

to do it for years. Perhaps they want to change their will – or do their first

will. Perhaps they just want to chat about what they might put in place now in case they begin to decline mentally in the future. Some people are worried about care home fees and what they can do to protect their assets against nursing

home fees. Not all solicitors are like the men in grey suits you may

imagine. Come along and meet our team at the Golden Years Roadshow. Or if you miss us give us a ring and visit us. We wont charge for a half hour chat. It is always best to put things in place before that crisis happens.
