GlossyMag: What are your scent trends for fall/winter 2012/2013?Aedes de Venustas: A few new perfumes from various

houses (Kilian, L’Artisan) and our own new fragrance,

naturally!

GM:What do you expect from a perfume?AdV: We only add perfumes to our family of products

which capture our delight and whose background is

truly authentic – we want the sto-

ry of the perfumer or that of the

house or creative director. When

you have these to tell to the custo-

mer, you can explain what’s really

special about a perfume.

GM: After having curated perfumes for years, you’ve now developed your own. Did you have any special requirements? AdV: Our new line is based on

our experiences, the wishes of

our customers and the fact that

perfume’s “centuries-old traditi-

on” is often forgotten or subsu-

med by marketing. Furthermore,

with our license partner, we have

the luxury of selecting our own

perfumer. That way, we can save

on raw material costs.

GM: How would you describe the scent of your perfume?AdV: Our new perfume is a classic Chypre: a citrus top

note, a fl owery heart note and a mossy-fresh bottom

note. Our perfumer, Bertrand Duchaufour, also added

a compound of rhubarb (top) and Vetiver (bottom)

which serves as the core for the other components.

GM: The fl acon is representative of the 1920’s. What draws you to this time – what do you associate with it?

for years, you’ve now developed your own. Did you have any special

cause it was both old and modern, round and oval, and

therefore built a bridge between then and now.

GM: Your perfumery is called Aedes de Venustas. How did you come up with this name? AdV: Aedes de Venustas means “temple of beauty” in

Latin. We decided to use the “mother” of all languages

to bring together the different countries from which

we get our products.

GM: Stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Liv Tyler and Hugh Jackman ask you to create customized fragrances. How do you go about this process and – we’re curious – how does Ms. Parker smell?AdV: We’ve known them all perso-

nally for a number of years, so it’s

relatively easy for us to know what

these customers will like. SJP, for in-

stance, loves anything spicy.

GM: Many perfumes are given as Christmas gifts. Do you think this is a good idea? Perfume is, after all, a personal thing. What do I need to keep in mind if I’d like to give a bot-tle of perfume? AdV: We ask as much as we can

about the gift recipient so that we

can get a feel for what she’s like.

Then, we’ll suggest a few different

perfumes depending on factors like age, skin tone,

location, time of year, etc.

GM: What would make you really happy for Christmas? AdV: We’re going to be in the store 12-15 hours a day

between Thanksgiving (November 22) and Christmas.

After all that, a quiet Christmas with tasty German

food is the absolute best!
