Women’s Rights• July 19-20, 1848 The country’s first women’s rights

convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York• 1903 The National Women’s Trade Union League was

formed and constituted itself with the main goal of equal pay for equal work

• June 12, 1948 The Women’s Armed Forces Integration Act authorized women to enlist in the military alongside men, rather than in their own separate units

• June 10, 1963 The Equal Pay Act, which prohibits wage discrimination based on gender, was enacted

• July 2, 1964 Civil Rights Act was enacted, outlawing major forms of race and sex based discrimination

• January 29, 2009 Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was signed, making it easier for women to challenge unequal pay

• March 23, 2010 Affordable Care Act was signed, which bans insurance companies from charging women more than men for the same coverage

Even though people sometimes expect women to be less interested or competent in technical areas than men, men and women should be treated equally in all work environments because of the Executive Order (EO) 11246 and the Equal Pay Act.

Equal Pay ActIn Section 6 of the Equal Pay Act, it is stated that, “No employer having employees subject to any provisions of this section shall discriminate... between employees on the basis of sex by paying wages to employees in such establishment at a rate less than the rate at which he pays wages to employees of the opposite sex in such establishment for equal work on jobs... except where such payment is made pursuant to (i) a seniority system; (ii) a merit system; (iii) a system which measures earnings by quantity or quality of production; or (iv) a differential based on any other factor other than sex”

Executive Order (EO) 11246

Section 202 of The Executive Order (EO) 11246 states that “The contractor will not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.”

If law is broken, the Secretary of Labor may “Publish, or cause to be published, the names of contractors or unions which it has concluded have complied or have failed to comply with the provisions of this Order or of the rules, regulations, and orders of the Secretary of Labor.” If this happens, little to no people will want to work for said contractor.

Are Women Paid Less, Equal, or

More than Men?

Less Equal More

Based purely on their own knowledge, the class came to the conclusion that women are paid less than men in Psychology and Physics, equal in Military and Cardiology, and more in Nursing.

Got Equality? Not in Pay!

It took an extra 4 months in 2013 for women to finally

earn what men made in 2012 in the same

jobs, where they preform equal work.

Could It Be Children Causing Pay Inequality?

“Nearly 40 percent of mothers worked part-time or not at all compared with 3 percent of fathers, according to a study by the American Association of University Women. Women who leave the labor force don’t gain much work experience so that when they return to work, they’re likely to make less than another person, male or female, with the same qualifications who has an unbroken career record.”

During an interview, Judith Warner found that “Women who had returned to the work force a decade after leaving their jobs to take care of their kids were generally in lower paying, less prestigious jobs than the ones they left.”

Do You Think Hav-ing Children Effects

the Equality of Pay?

Page 13: Gender pay equality

Long story short, women and men are not being

paid equally. Whether it is because of children or disobedience to the

law is debatable, but the bottom line is this:

Women and Men are NOT receiving equal pay for

equal work.

This MUST change.
