    44Krug Brut 1996Reims

The 1996 Krug Vintage remains oneof the greatest Champagnes evermade. It is also far less expensivethan either the Clos du Mesnil or ClosdAmbonnay but equally as delicious. This bottle is stratospheric, with layersof explosive fruit that flow effortlesslyto the multi-dimensional, captivating

finish. It is another eternal Champagnefrom Krug. A. Galloni for R. Parker, 98pts. 07/116 bottles

Salons 1997 Brut Blanc de Blancsis drop-dead gorgeous. There is abeautiful tension between the intenseminerality of Mesnil and the warmth ofthe vintage. Textural depth, brillianceand expressive inner perfume are thehallmarks of this gorgeous Blanc de

Blancs. Flowers, mint and crisp varietalfruit linger on the impeccable finish. This is a particularly youthful, vibrantdisgorgement of the 1997 that can beenjoyed now or cellared. DisgorgedFirst Trimester, 2010. A. Galloni for R.Parker, 95 pts. 12/106 bottles (owc)

The 1996 Salon is yet another winethat is maturing splendidly. Oncefocused to the point of being painfullyaustere and angular, today the 1996Salon has begun to soften and fillout. My latest bottles have been rich, generous and totally compelling inevery way. A. Galloni for R. Parker,97+ pts. 11/103 bottles

1990: In terms of the brilliantcomplexity and nobility of thearomatics, scorched earth, blackcurrants, plums, charcoal, cedar, andspices, the 1990 offers an aromaticexplosion that is unparalleled. Itis always fascinating to taste thiswine next to the 1989, which is amonumental effort, but much morebackward and denser, without the

aromatic complexity of the 1990. The1990 put on weight after bottling, andis currently rich, full-bodied, opulent, even flamboyant by Haut Brionsstandards. It is an incredible expressionof a noble terroir in a top vintage. Whileit has been fully mature for a numberof years, it does not reveal any brickingat the edge, and I suspect it will stayat this level for another 10-15 years...but why wait? It is irresistible now. 57Chateau Haut Brion 2000Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe

A compelling nose of roasted herbs, scorched earth, sweet blueberries, plums, black currants, and a hint ofgraphite is followed by a deep, layered, sumptuously textured, full-bodiedHaut-Brion, but one with extraordinarycomplexity. This wine seems moreevolved and approachable than Ihad expected it to be at age 10. Mywindow of maturity seven years agowas 2012-2040, but I would changethat to 2010-2050. R. Parker, 99 pts.

    u: into neck

The 1986 possesses outstandingrichness, a deep color, mediumbody, a graceful, harmonious texture, and superb length. The penetratingfragrance of cedar, chestnuts, minerals, and rich fruit is a hallmark of this wine.Powerful, dense, rich, and tannic, aswell as medium to full-bodied, withawesome extraction of fruit, this Lafitehas immense potential. Patience isrequired. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2030. Last tasted 11/94. R. Parker,100 pts. 01/981 bottle

    $800-1,200

    62Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1996Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe

Tasted three times since bottling, the 1996 Lafite-Rothschild isunquestionably this renowned estatesgreatest wine. As I indicated last year, only 38% of the crop was deemedgrand enough to be put into thefinal blend, which is atypically high inCabernet Sauvignon (83% Cabernet

Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7%Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot). Thismassive wine may be the biggest,largest-scaled Lafite I have evertasted. It will require many years tocome around, so I suspect all of uspast the age of fifty might want to giveserious consideration as to whetherwe should be laying away multiplecases of this wine. It is also the firstLafite-Rothschild to be put into anew engraved bottle (designed toprevent fraudulent imitations). The wineexhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purplecolor, and a knock-out nose of leadpencil, minerals, flowers, and blackcurrant scents. Extremely powerfuland full-bodied, with remarkablecomplexity for such a young wine, this huge Lafite is oozing with extractand richness, yet has managed topreserve its quintessentially elegantpersonality. This wine is even richerthan it was prior to bottling. It shouldunquestionably last for 40-50 years.R. Parker, 100 pts. 04/997 bottles

The 2005 Ducru Beaucaillou is a10,000-case blend of 67% CabernetSauvignon and 33% Merlot (they usedto produce 18,000-20,000 cases). Itis an exceptionally powerful wine witha dense purple color, superb intensity, and a beautiful, sweet nose of springflowers, raspberries, blueberries, graphite, and creme de cassis. Full-bodied with fabulous concentration, exceptionally high tannin, good acidity, and massive layers of richness thatbuild incrementally on the palate, thismonumental effort is more structuredthan their outstanding 2003. It ismore forward than the 2010 is likely tobe, but probably not as sumptuous asthe 2009 will turn out to be. This is awine to buy. R. Parker, 95+ pts. 05/1112 bottles (owc)

PetrusIn the renowned village ofPomerol, pack-leader Chateau Petrus

is unassumingly modest. Close by the

road, lacking some formal alley, it is

easy to overlook when contrasted with

    some architecturally grander neighbors.

    The robins-egg-blue shutters against

the limestone creates a hushed and

dignified exterior to the chai. Of course

the hedonistic treasures crafted within are

anything but reserved On average, only

about 4,000 cases are made each vintage.

    1990: An extraordinary effort, Yquems

1990 is a rich and fabulously superb, sweet wine. This wine also possesseslots of elegance and finesse. The winesmedium gold color is accompaniedby an exceptionally sweet nose ofhoneyed tropical fruits, peaches, coconut, and apricots. High quality, subtle toasty oak is well-integrated.The wine is massive on the palate, withlayers of intensely ripe botrytis-tinged,exceptionally sweet fruit. Surprisinglywell-integrated acidity, and a seamless,full-bodied power and richness havecreated a wine of remarkable harmonyand purity. Certainly it is one of therichest Yquems I have ever tasted, with50-100 years of potential longevity. Anawesome Yquem! R. Parker, 99 pts.04/991 demi bottle

In the mouth, it is full-bodied withgorgeously refreshing acidity as well asmassive concentration and unctuosity.Everything is uplifted and given laser-like focus by refreshing acidity. 238JF Mugnier Musigny 1999Cote de Nuits

Tasting note: (opened from personalstorage; also with thanks to GeddyLee). A highly expressive, indeed evenexplosive nose offers up wonderfullypure spice and menthol-infused blackcherry fruit aromas that complementelegant, sexy and beautifully refinedmedium-weight flavors that areunderpinned by velvet wrapped tanninsand stunning persistence. Though thisis not what I would call a dense wine,it has a finish that lasts for minutes andexudes energy and vibrancy plus theimpeccable balance should permit the99 Musigny to drink well for a long, long time. A terrific wine that clearly is

still on its way up so assuming that youhave well-stored bottles, there shouldbe no concern about missing theprime drinking window. All of that said, this could be enjoyed now with 30minutes or so of air and the right food.I have multiple, and consistent, notes.Burghound, 95 pts. 10/121 bottle

Tasting note: In contrast to theexpressiveness of the first two 05s,here there is a completely differentaromatic profile and one that isbrooding with more deeply pitchedand quite ripe blue and violet aromascombining with pungent earth and

Tasting note: A similar but slightlyriper and much spicier nose includesblue berry and plum nuances thatprecede the more obviously mineral-

driven medium-bodied flavors thatbrim with dry extract. The extremelypure and utterly delicious finish isshaped by the dense but fine tanninsthat are given added energy by theperfectly integrated acid spine. This is aseriously lovely effort. Burghound, 93pts. 01/122 bottles

Tasting note: Brilliant ruby. Expansiveand very open on the nose with afantastic array of spices, flowers andfruit aromas leading to very serious, exuberantly fresh and impressivelydeep flavors that also have awonderfully tactile texture to them. But

as it usually is, its not the raw powerthat impresses but rather the incrediblecombination of mind bogglingcomplexity coupled with perfectbalance and this just dances acrossthe palate yet stains it with notably ripepinot extract. The finish is all silk andvelvet but with a deeply buried, veryfirm and chewy backbone of tanninsthat lasts for minutes. This is greatnessin the making. Tasted multiple timeswith consistent notes. finish that delivers genuinely stunninglength. I love the way Musigny canso effortlessly combine a silky palateimpression with serious muscle. Thisshould be quite impressive in timethough note that it will need a minimumof 18 to 25 years of cellar time.Burghound, 96 pts. 01/116 bottles

Clos du Mont Olivet Chateauneuf duPape Cuvee Papet 2007Southern Rhone

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape LaCuvee du Papet may will turn out to betheir finest example since the 1998 and1990. Stylistically, it probably comesclosest to resembling the legendary1990. Notes of roasted meats andsmoked duck, with Provencal herbs, truffle, incense, licorice, and pepper, are all there, plus enormous quantitiesof red and black fruits. This is one heckof a complex wine, with a bouquet thatis the essence of southern France,in particular Provence. Full-bodied,powerful, with the glycerin and level ofrichness covering some lofty tannins, this wine is already accessible andnearly impossible to resist, but myinstincts suggest it will be absolutelyglorious in another 4-5 years and keepfor 15-20. There are 1,800 cases of the 2007Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du MonAieul (100% tank-aged Grenache). It represents an awesome naked/virginal expression of Grenache fromthree vineyard parcels planted in sand, clay, and limestone soils. After tastingthis wine on five separate occasions,I can state with certainty, it has themost saturated color of any MonAieul produced to date. Moreover, itsperfume of blueberry liqueur, blackraspberries, licorice, roasted meatjuices, and lavender is incredible.Full-bodied power, a multilayeredmouthfeel, tremendous purity, andawesome concentration put this winein a class by itself. This sensationalChateauneuf du Pape is still very
