The death of this wonderful person and inspirational player rocked the international football family and the nation of Cameroon. The difficulty understanding how a player so young could die in a stadium and the universal grief that ensued are still quite overwhelming.

During the competition in France, a cer-tain amount of criticism was levelled at the decision to stage the Final between France and Cameroon as scheduled. Going ahead with the match just a few a days after Foé’s death was by no means an act of irreverence. The entire Cameroonian delegation, the nation’s Minister for Sport and most impor-tantly the player’s family all wanted the game to be played. They told the FIFA President that quite clearly, when he travelled to Lyons the day after this terrible incident to console Marc-Vivien’s team-mates and loved ones. FIFA complied with their wishes.

Foé is no longer with us, but in our hearts and our minds he lives on. We will not forget this special person and talented footballer.

It may be that football can play a part in helping those who are left behind to overcome their grief and it can serve as a source of hope. However, despite the far-reaching influence of our game, it sadly remains powerless in the face of such heart-rending acts of fate.

Five-time world champions Brazil tried to blood new players. At times, the team excelled, with the strikers applying great pressure and the whole team keeping the ball moving. But at crucial points in matches, they were too predictable and squandered many chances. However, Carlos Alberto Parreira will have learnt a lot for the future. Without a number of superstars, such as Ronaldo, Rivaldo, and Roberto Carlos, Brazil were not able to repeat their past triumphs.

US coach Bruce Arena fielded a number of new squad players and used a different playing system in each match. The Americans’ counter-attacks were a joy to behold, but they were still knocked out in the group stage. In Donovan, Beasley and Martino, the US team certainly has players who could make an impression in the future.

New Zealand could not repeat their won-derful achievement (defeating Australia) and went home without a win to their name. A defeat in their opening match against Japan proved to be fatal. France and Colombia, although the latter needed an hour to break down a resolute Kiwi defence, also proved too strong. The New Zealanders need much more match practice before they will be able to live with the major powers in world football.

The FIFA Confederations Cup in France capti-vated many with the carefree attacking foot-ball on show. Cameroon also became the first African team to reach the Final.

The Africans atoned for their early exit at the World Cup in Korea/Japan by playing with great heart and no little talent. The tragic death of their midfield leader Marc-Vivien Foé will bring this committed team even closer together. Coach Winnie Schäfer knows exactly how to organise these wonderful athletes in terms of tactics, while still allowing them a certain amount of freedom during matches. They dedicated the Final to their deceased team-mate Marc-Vivien Foé.

In the wake of their disappointing early exit in Korea/Japan, the French appointed a new coach, with Jacques Santini asked to lead Les Bleus to further glory. He used this tourna-ment to blood a lot of young, hopeful players, trying to shape a balanced team consisting

of experienced players and debutants. Even without Zinedine Zidane, France made their class tell and successfully defended their title.

Turkey won many admirers with their fast attacking football, technique, and tactics. Coach Senol Gunes formed a new team that emulated the success previously enjoyed by Turkish teams, eventually defeating Colombia in the third-place playoff.

The South American representatives, Colombia, impressed the watching crowds with an attractive short-passing game and their wonderful athleticism. But they put themselves under pressure by failing to con-vert chances into goals, eventually missing out on a place in the Final.

Under Zico’s leadership, Japan impressed with their technique, tactics and athleticism. They used quick counter-attacking football and were able to show just how far they have come in international football. But a number of avoidable lapses of concentration ulti-mately cost them a place in the semi-finals.

TrendsOverall Analysis

The FIFA Confederations Cup was character-ised by compact defensive play, with 8 or 9 players defending before launching rapid and accurate counter-attacks. In international football, it is becoming increasingly important to gain space in order to be able to surprise opponents when back in possession of the ball.

Observations first made at the World Cup in Korea/Japan were confirmed: today’s players are athletic, show flexibility techni-cally and tactically, and possess a wonderful understanding of the game. Top players today simply have to be able to read play.

Up front, a team now needs quick, tricky and agile strikers with the ability to escape the attentions of a compact defence.

All eight teams used a variation of the 4-4-2 system, with only New Zealand adopting a classical 4-4-2.

The coaches often changed the system during matches, thereby also effecting tacti-cal changes. In defence, they changed from a 4-4-2 to either a 4-4-1-1 or a 4-5-1, while in attack they changed to either a 3-4-3 or a 4-3-3.

Flexible tactics are a must in modern football.

Many young, hopeful players took part in the Confederations Cup. The coaches gave young players more and more opportunity to play at the very highest level of international football.

The following players – not one of them older than 23 – are sure to have a glittering future in the game: Kameni, Mexès, Atouba, Olembe, Convey, Beasley, Donovan, M’Bami, Martino, Pedretti, Kapo, Kleber, Idrissou, Endo, Gil, Ronaldinho, Govou, Cissé, Killen, Adriano, Okubo, Tuncay Sanli and Eto’o.

This new generation of players stood out in the following areas:• Technical, tactical flexibility• Athleticism• Ability to assert themselves (one-on-one

situations)• Understanding of the game• Anticipation• Leadership qualities• Sense of responsibility

New Generation of players Playing Systems

Technical and Tactical Analysis

– The French played deep in their own half (58%). Many teams now adopt this tactic in an attempt to utilise the full length of the pitch.

– They also tended to direct their play down the left wing, with Lizarazu and either Wil-tord or Henry often involved.

– Only two players, Giuly and Sagnol, exerted any pressure down the right wing.

– In attack, the two strikers, Cissé and Henry, received very little support.

Technical and Tactical Analysis

63

– Cameroon also tended to play defensively, sitting deep in their own half of the pitch (55%) and using the wings too often (30%).

– They often resorted to diagonal cross-field balls from Geremi on the right to Idrissou on the left. The team did not look to play the ball immediately to the two strikers, such as N’Diefi and Eto’o.
