T he game began with bothteams looking nervous

and cautious . A number ofthe players looked as if theywould be happy with just amoderate tempo, especiallythe Czechs who had put outtoo much in their earliermatches and were clearlytired; they only had a spo-radic influence on the game .The best Czech player untilthen, Smicer, looked listlessand seemed to hide away inmidfield . The Czech teamused clever counter-attackingtactics while Uruguay reliedtoo much on individual ef-forts. On the whole theCzechs were more danger-ous and they created somegood chances . The differ-ence was simple : team playversus individual efforts .There were lots of fouls (25 tothe Czechs' account, 12 toUruguay) . When the goal didcome it wasthe result of adeceptive shot that the Uru-guayan goalkeeper allowedto bounce back into playwhere it was gratefully ac-cepted by no . 15 Lasota whopushed it into the net withoutmuch trouble. This wasone oftheveryfew goalkeeping errorsin the whole tournament .

Although Uruguay's youngsters made a good impression, the experience of the older Czechplayers proved to be the deciding factor . Here Kuka (no. 9) goes by Montero and seems likely toget past Lopez as well .

In the match between Brazil and the Czech Republic, the ballskills of the South Americans won the day against the more"workmanlike" efforts of the European team . This is Leonardoelegantly passing Bejbl.

Brazil vsCzech RepublicT his wasa meeting of twoattacking sides, and based ontheir earlier performances itwould have been a worthy fi-nal . Playing quite differentstyles of football, both teamsbegan at a moderate pace, and Brazil missed some earlychances, several of them in averywasteful manner. The

second half started with Bra-zil putting more effort intotheir game and the introduc-tion of Denislon speeded uptheir rhythm, especially in at-tack . A decisive factor in Bra-zil's getting the upper handwasthe Czech decision to al-ter their formation so that itbecame the same as the Bra-zi I is ns - 4-4-2. This gave theSouth American ball artiststhe space they needed .Once they got an attack

The game became verylively towards the end . TheBrazilians were now combin-ing well from the back, usinglong and short passes and itwas no surprise that they gotthe two goals that settled theoutcome of the match .

Uruguay vsAustraliaThis game brought togetherthe two surprise teams of thetournament . Australia hadshown strong defensive per-formances in their groupmatches and they stuck withthis concept for the semi-fi-nal. The effect was that therewas not much flowing play inthe first half . The Australiansmade space so tight at theirend of the pitch that even theindividually strong Uruguay-ans could not make anyheadway.

Both teams used the ballcarefully coming out of de-fence, and attacks were usu-ally down the middle or onthe left flank; very little hap-pened on the right and therewere no changes of pace .There was a lot of nervous-ness among the players and anumber of fouls were com-

mitted, some of them hiddenand quite nasty. Both sets offorwards had adjusted theirsights poorly for this gameand both used mainly coun-ter-attacking tactics, Uruguaylargely through individual ac-tions, Australia mainlyviateam efforts . It was not an in-tensive game and extra timelooked very likely . Yet when itcame, the game was overwithin two minutes as Kewellfinished off a surprise attackwith a superb golden goalfrom 17 meters .
