ENVIRONMENT AND INDIVIDUAL MOBILITY

Today the auto industry in Europe employs over 12 million people, and represents 25% of global auto production. At 28 billion euros a year, this sector represents the largest private European investor in Research and Development. These numbers underline the sector’s importance and the role of carmakers in respecting and safeguarding the environment.

Ecological awareness increases every year.Respect for the environment is an ever-greater priority for carmakers as well as customers. This macro trend has a major impact on buying criteria and customer preference.

Mobility is synonymous with freedom and development.

Today the automobile is the most flexible response to the needs of individual mobility, the most used means of transportation, as well as an important economic investment.

Therefore the automotive sector plays a major role in European economic development.

...but not the willingness to spend more for an “ecological” car.

Environmental regulations are always becoming more challenging.

Customers want cars that are constantly more efficient, ecological and economical, but also more affordable.

Demand is growing for compact cars with techno-logical and top quality features till now available only on higher segment automobiles.

This is how the automotive industry plays an active role in the global struggle against climate change and pollution. For years Fiat has invested resources and committed itself to reducing the environmental impact of its products, setting more and more ambitious goals

CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2)

This gas is among those responsible for the greenhouse effect.

In the EU, around 12% of CO2 emissions can be traced back to cars.

Thanks to the Voluntary agreement for reductions in CO2 emissions

established in 1998 between automakers and the European

Commission, new cars registered in 2011 achieved 25% lower

CO2 levels with respect to 1995.

Over this same period, Fiat reduced its product emissions

by 32%.

In 2008 the European Commission introduced new limits aimed

at reaching average emissions levels of 130g/km by 2015 and

95 g/km in 2020 through technological improvements.

Automakers will in fact be required to cut CO2 emissions in half by

2020 with respect to 1995.

POLLUTING EMISSIONS Polluting emissions, such as particulates and nitrogen oxides, directly affect air quality.

European Union environmental protection regulations impose tighter limits on automakers regarding polluting emissions, and are now defining precise goals for the next few years. With the Euro 5 standards, objectives defined for particulates are so low they are near the threshold of measurability.

Under Euro 6 standards, emissions of nitrogen oxides from diesel engines will be practically equivalent to those from gasoline engines.

MANUFACTURERSHAVE EXPANDED

THE OFFER OFECO-TECHNOLOGICAL

SOLUTIONS

In this context of growing attention toward the environment,

accompanied by changes in driver preferences, car manufacturers

are developing a broad range of eco-technological solutions -

ranging from improving the efficiency of conventional engines

to the use of alternative fuels (CNG, LPG, biofuels) and alternative

propulsion systems (electric and hybrid).

10

THE “WELL-TO-WHEEL”APPROACH

By using biomethane produced from renewable sources, CNG technology offers the same

ecological advantages as electric technology using energy produced from renewable sources.

This is shown by a “well-to-wheel” analysis, comparing the dif ferent solutions from the standpoint of

vehicle efficiency as well as the technology needed to produce, transport and store the energy source.

FIAT AND SUSTAINABLE MOBILITYFiat Group sees as an es-sential part of its strategy the commitment to reducing the environmental and social im-pact of the vehicle during its whole life cycle.

A single solution does not exist for sustainable mobility. In the current context, only the combination of alternative and conventional technologies can offer immediate, concrete results.

For this reason, Fiat is committed to:

improving efficiency and reducing emissions from traditional diesel and gasoline engines

developing the use of alternative fuels

involving customers and raising their awareness

NEW GASOLINE ENGINES

With MultiAir technology, Fiat revolutionized the world of gasoline engines, and pro-duced clear improvements in fuel savings and respect for the environment.

The heart of MultiAir is the new electro-hydraulic valve management system that reduces fuel consumption through direct control of engine air intake.

In 2010 the FIRE 1.4 Turbo enginewith MultiAir technology was namedBest New Engine of The Year.

16

NEW GASOLINE ENGINES

TwinAir reconfirms Fiat Group’s leadership in eco-sustainable mobility.TwinAir, a two-cylinder, gasoline engine, that takes the concept of downsizing to another level.Introduced in 2010 on the Fiat 500, today it represents a whole family of engines ranging from 65 to 105 hp and is available on the Panda, Punto, Fiat 500 and 500L models.TwinAir uses the revolutionary MultiAir system combined with specific fluid-dynamics optimized for maximum fuel efficiency. This solution guarantees up to a 30% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions with equal performance.

The result of Fiat engineering know-how, the 85 hp TwinAir Turbo boasts the lowest CO2 emission levels for a gasoline engine in Europe: 90 g/km on the Fiat 500 with Dualogic transmission. This synthesis of technology and respect for the environment has brought many awards, including the prestigious recognition as the 2011 International Engine of the Year.

START&STOP

Available on most of the Fiat range, the Start&Stop system manages engine operation based on different driving situations. In case of heavy traffic or a stop at a traffic signal, it temporarily shuts down the engine and then restarts it, when necessary, on command from the driver. This system gives major reductions in consumption and emissions: around 10% in congested traffic situations and 3.5% in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

GSI - GEAR SHIFT INDICATOR

The GSI acts like a real “co-pilot,” limiting consumption and CO2

emissions by suggesting the ideal gear for the most efficient use of the engine. This device is already available on various Fiat models and will soon be extended to the entire range.

NEW GENERATION TRANSMISSIONS

The Dualogic robotic transmission (an Automated Manual Transmission or AMT) is based on an automation technology applied to a manual transmission, and combines excellent comfort of use with reductions in consumption and emissions. With Dualogic, gear selection and clutch activation are performed by electro-hydraulic components, acting in place of the driver, and controlled by an electronic unit that guarantees proper gear shifting in all driving conditions. The Dualogic helps reduce CO2 emissions up to 5% compared to a traditional manual transmission (NEDC cycle).

TECHNOLOGY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

ALTERNATIVE FUELS

Ecological and Fun to drive2012 saw the birth of the TwinAir Natural Power Panda, a model that combines the ecological and economical advantages of CNG fuel with the power and driving fun of TwinAir technology.

The Fiat Panda is the first car in the world to be equipped with a 2-cylinder, turbo-charged, CNG-gasoline engine, the perfect marriage between reductions in fuel consumption and driving fun, thanks to high specific power rating and excellent torque performance.Equipped with the 80 hp 0.9 TwinAir Turbo Natural Power, the new Panda guarantees reduced levels of CO2 (86 g/km) as well as lower fuel consumption (3.1 kg/100 km in the standard combined cycle), both these values recorded with CNG fuel.In particular, this emission level is an absolute record for cars from the Fiat Group, and among the lowest values on the market. On the new model, CNG autonomy has also increased around 10% compared to the Panda Classic 1.4 Natural Power, reaching 300 km, with a 30% improvement in performance.

In addition, the gasoline fuel tank has a 35-liter capacity (practically the same as the Panda with a traditional engine), guarantee ing maximum freedom of movement even when a CNG fueling station is not nearby.

As in the previous Panda Natural Power, the two fuel systems are independent from each other. After starting with gasoline, the car shifts automatically to CNG, then returns to gasoline only when the natural gas in the cylinder is near completion. The driver can also manually choose the type of fuel by pressing a button on the dashboard.

20

For over fifteen years, Fiat has been the European leader in the field of CNG cars.Today CNG engines represent the most efficient technological choice for significantly reducing CO2

emissions and resolving pollution problems in urban areas.

23

CNG is the cleanest and most economical fuel available and the only real alternative to gasoline and diesel. reduces to a minimum the most harmful emissions: particulates (practically to zero), nitrogen oxides and the most reactive hydrocarbons, which cause formation of other pollutants

lowers CO2 emissions by 23% with respect to gasoline engines

represents a potential renewable source thanks to the development of biomethane

The Fiat Natural Power line is the broadest range of bi-fuel (gasoline/CNG) vehicles on the market, capable of responding to the needs of all types of customers - professional users included.

Fiat has adopted dual-fuel engines to combine the advantages of CNG with the ease of refueling with ga-soline, a solution that guarantees peace of mind even in areas where CNG fueling stations are less common.

Fiat strongly believes in the potential of CNG as a key fuel source for sustainable mobility. If general conditions favor its development, Fiat will continue to introduce new products on the market.

Compressed Natural Gas

24

Fiat is continuously investing in technologies capable of utilizing available natural resources.

Flexfuel technology allows the use of varying blends of gasoline and bioethanol. In Brazil, Fiat has made this solution available across the entire range, an investment that has made it the sales leader on the Brazilian market.

All Fiat engines currently sold in Europe are compatible with biofuels: bioethanol mixed with up to 10% gasoline (E10) and biodiesel mixed with up to 7% diesel (B7).

Tetrafuel is the first engine in the world designed to run on four different fuels: bioethanol, “gasolina” (gasoline mixed with 22% bioethanol), gasoline and CNG, further proof of Fiat’s know-how and innovation.

BIOFUELS

CNG also plays an important role in the field of renewable energy, since it represents a bridge towards an even more sustainable option: biomethane. Produced from biomass (and therefore without affecting food resources), biomethane has characteristics comparable to those of CNG.From a “well-to-wheel” standpoint, biomass vehicles produce

around the same CO2 emissions as an electric vehicle fueled by renewable resources. For this reason, biomethane is a viable solution for those countries, like Italy, constantly facing tighter regulations regarding renewable energy. All CNG engines from Fiat Group Automobiles are compatible with properly purified biomethane.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITYA 360° APPROACHAt F i a t , a t te n t i o n to t h e environment is not l imited to the p roduc t, bu t a l so concerns overall production: from choice of materials to plant processes and logistics.

Production processes of the Group utilize more and more materials that are recycled, recyclable, or from natural sources. This choice has led for example to remarkable reductions in the use of PVCs and thermosetting polymers in component construction.

World Class Manufacturing (WCM)WCM is an integrated model aimed at excellence across the entire production and logistics cycle, with special attention to eliminating accidents, waste, and breakdowns. WCM is applied to all production environments in order to optimize results through continuous improvement of processes. The goal is to obtain highest product quality, control and progressive reduction of production costs, flexibility in responding to market needs, and the involvement and motivation of personnel. All Fiat Group Automobiles plants have adopted WCM.

ISO 14001 In keeping with its own environmental guidelines, Fiat considers the complete and homogeneous activation of an environmental management system (SGA), certified according to international ISO 14001 standards, as the most effective tool for constantly reducing the environmental impact of its production processes. As proof of Fiat’s commitment to this goal, requirements related to energy management included in the new ISO 50001 standards have been integrated into the environmental management system.

37

ECO-SUSTAINABLE DESIGNFOCUS ON RECOVERABILITY AND MATERIALS

In Italy alone, every year around 1 million vehicles are scrapped, generating over 1.2 million metric tons of material for disposal.Since September 2000, European Union Directive 2000/53 has assigned the responsibility for disposing of end-of-life vehicles to all economic operators involved in various aspects of their management, including carmakers themselves.Fiat has embraced this commitment with great determination, adopting various measures on both the design and production levels, and going well beyond legal requirements.

38

Fiat Group is highly focused on the issues of recyclability and recoverability of end-of-life vehicles. For some years now, all cars from Fiat Group have been 95% recoverable, as ordered by European Union Directive 2005/64, also called the 3Rs - Reuse, Recycle, and Recover.Fiat also focuses on the reuse of components originating from repairs. The Group supplies the market with a line of reconditioned spare parts.

REACH, the fight against dangerous substancesThe Registration Evaluation Authorisation of Chemi-cals (REACH) document regulates the production, importation, distribution, and use of chemical substances in the European Union with the aim of improving awareness of the risks from new or already existing chemical products. In effect since 2007, these regulations determine the danger levels of around 30,000 chemical products and require regis-tration with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).In this area, over the past few years, Fiat has focused on identifying and monitoring “Substances of Very High Concern” (SVHC) in its products with the aim of presenting alternative solutions and thus continually improving products by lowering their impact on the environment.

Air quality in the passenger compartmentFiat is particularly committed to improving air quality in the passenger compartment, giving priority to solutions with low emissions and constantly monitoring its vehicles. One main objective is minimizing emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Fiat is also at the front line in the search for solutions that facilitate safety implementation of vehicles to be recycled (for example, facilitated removal of fluids) and optimize the choice of plastic materials (reduc-tion in the use of thermosetting polymers and PVCs), with special attention given to the use of recycled materials. The use of polypropylenes from end-of-life vehicles has increased as well as the use of natural fibers from recycled insulation.
