2 DirectLinkª

DirectLink is a series of wall and mast mount directional antennas that has been designed to meet the most demandingneeds of the contemporary wireless environment. DirectLink's attractive, UV resistant housings and mounts allow theantennas to be mounted anywhere in the campus or in-building environment. The antennas offer very precise andcontrollable pattern characteristics in frequencies starting with the 1710 MHz DCS band and continuing through the5.725 GHz ISM band. All popular contemporary wireless system applications are covered with gain characteristicsvarying with frequency.

All antennas in the series may be wall or mast mounted and all are available with a variety of flush and articulatingmounts. Flush mounts allow the antenna to hug the wall for minimal visual impact. There are two available articulatingmounts that allow the pattern to be directed while still maintaining minimal visual impact.

Standard antennas come with either TNC, SMA or N female connectors and an integrated coaxial pigtail. Otherconnector and pigtail combinations are available upon request.

DirectLinkª has been

designed to eliminate

concerns over aesthetics

in professional workplaces

and neighborhoods.

DirectLinkÔs contemporary

design and neutral color

make it a perfect choice

for these applications.

2 dBi Integrated Omnidirectional Diversity Antennas Cushcraft's integrated diversity antenna designs feature two separate 2 dBi omnidirectional radiating elementssharing a common backplane and enclosure. The radiating elements are terminated with coaxial pigtails andmmcx connectors that exit the backplane of the antenna. Hence, they can interface with an access point that hasbeen mounted in the plenum above the ceiling if so desired. The complete package dimensions are 5.25" X2.75" X .75". Both coax length, connector type and package aesthetics can be modified to meet customerrequirements. Offices, HealthCare facilities, educational or industrial campuses and shopping malls arejust a few of the more common applications for these antenna designs.

* Antenna also available with side exit coax for shelf or desktop mount.

Cushcraft Dual Feed &Circular Panel Antennas

Dual feed panel antennas offer two portsfor polarization diversity and are well suitedto environments where multipath is a concernbut space is limited. Polarization diversityallows the user to achieve the desireddiversity benefit in the footprint of oneantenna. All Cushcraft dual feed antennasfeature a minimum of 18 dB of port isolation.

¥ HVP antennas offer diversity benefits in the foot print of a single antenna.

Circular polarization antennas are a good choice for system applications where remote device orientation israndom and widely variable.

¥ Circular Polarized antennas mitigate performance degradation sometimes caused by variation in remote terminal orientation..

2.4 GHz Monopole Omni The Cushcraft 2.4 GHz monopole antenna has a largebackplane and is designed for applications with a veryfocused omnidirectional pattern where an in-buildingsystem is required. For example, the monopole couldbe used to focus signal directly into an area where it isvery difficult to get any coverage.

Antenna Selection Criteria

Before you can make an informedantenna selection, you must knowthe following: What frequencyrange should the antenna cover? What gain is needed? If you don'tknow the exact gain you should beable to describe the system usingthe antennas. For example, howlarge is the area? What obstruc-tions are in the area; buildings, trees, shelves, walls etc.? Youshould know how the antenna willbe mounted or at least how youwould like to mount it. With thisinformation you can eliminate anumber of alternatives. Currently the most popular spreadspectrum systems are operating inthe 900 MHz range or in the 2.4GHz range. These are your basicchoices for spread. Other data ap-plications take place anywherefrom 25 MHz to 5.9 GHz. Someantennas outside of the 900 MHzand 2.4 GHz ranges are found else-where in this catalog. If you don'tsee what you need or have anyquestions, please call the factory.S2406BH

Data Transmission Omnis Standard Data Transmission Omnis are fully decoupledantennas built on a copper laminate and housed in 0.100inch wall fiberglass housings. They may be mountedright side-up or tipped upsidedown depending upon thedesired pattern. They alsofeature a very versatile clampmounting system that will fitmost every situation you willencounter.

Omnidirectional antennas are the right choice for situations where you need to be in contact with sources thatare in two directions or if you do not know what direction the signals will be coming from. Receiving signals from

two wellheads that are in different directions is an example of the former. An example ofthe latter would be a warehouse environment where a worker with a handheld terminal ismoving about the area while sending and receiving data.

These two pages illustrate three stylesof antennas. Their construction isvery similar but they vary in gain. In general, your best choice is theantenna with the least gain thatwill do the job well. This keepsthe cost at a minimum. Theseantennas are all housed in toughfiberglass enclosures. They arebuilt on very repeatable fiberglasssubstrates. The larger two modelsfeature stainless steel U-bolts asmounting fixtures while the small0 dB gain antennas use economicalstainless steel clamps. The pigtailmounted connectors allow for ab-solute waterproofing of the con-nection between the antenna andthe transmission line by the installer. Cushcraft has developed enclosed omnidirectional antennas that are just right for outdoor andindoor applications in the 806-958 MHz range. All of the antennas in this series feature plated copperlaminated radiators, weatherproof fiberglass housings, UltraLink¨ Cable pigtails, type-N connectorsand DC grounded radiators. Mounting hardware is included.

Cushcraft antennas are available covering conventional 800, SMR on 800 and 900 MHz, 880-960MHz for GSM and the spread spectrum range of 902-928 MHz. Gains of 0 dB, 3 dB and 4 dB areavailable.

How long is a wavelength?

Sometimes you may be given measurements concerningantennas in wavelengths. You may be able to relate tothem better if they are in feet, inches or centimeters. Hereis how to make the conversion. The formulas here are forpropagation through air.

Wavelength = 11803 / Frequency; in this case the frequencymust be in MHz and the wavelength is in inches.

To find the wavelength in meters use:

Wavelength = 299.79 / Frequency, where frequency isagain in MHz.

800/900 MHz Yagis

Ruggedized mounting, all-welded joints, and complete weatherproofing are yours with Cushcraft 800 and 900 MHzYagis. At these frequencies, antenna construction is critical, so Cushcraft engineers used special techniques to developantennas that will last. For example, our 6, 10 and 13 element Yagis are mounted with two large stainless steel U-bolts. As in all PC Yagis, the elements are welded to the boom. These welds are on the inside of the boom to enhanceelectrical performance. We ensure complete weatherability by enclosing our feed system in a potted PVC radome that will stand up to yourmost demanding requirements. That's quality!

There's more. Our pigtail feed will withstand a 50 pound pull, and makes connectorweatherproofing a snap. There are no moveable components, so you neverhave to worry about adjustments or loose parts. All hardwareis stainless steel for longest life.

Which polarity do I choose?

In selecting or mounting antennas, you will occasionally be given achoice of vertical or horizontalpolarization. Some antennas, likeomnidirectional models, are fixedpolarity. Other antennas, such asYagis, are often able to be mountedin either plane. The waves leaveYagi antennas in the same plane asthe elements. If the elements areup and down, the polarity (or po-larization) is vertical.

It is necessary to have antennas atboth ends of the communicationslink of the same polarity. Mobilesystems traditionally have all anten-nas vertically polarized. For dedi-cated Yagi-to-Yagi links either po-larization may be selected but besure to choose the same for bothends of the path.

800/900 MHz Mobiles

Flex Base Mobiles Cushcraft has developed a breakthrough in mobile antenna design. Our new elasticized mobile antennas are more resilient and morewaterproof than any others. This same ultraviolet stabilized polymeris used in many automotive components. The flexible enclosure skinresists structural blows, weather, and all contaminants such as acidrain, gasoline, sunshine, broad swings in temperature, etc. Our testshave cycled this design through a temperature range of +135 degreesF to -40 degrees F (930 to -400C) many times. We have applied severevibrations to simulate high speed long term travel. We have struckthe base, center, and top of the antenna hundreds of times to assureourselves they will withstand tree limbs, garage doors and other lowclearances.

Flexible, Standard or Economy?

Our new flexible base antennasprovide advantages in longevity andease of installation. They offer anew technology for the mobile mar-ketplace. Our standard design offersthe same electrical qualities in amore traditional package. Oureconomy models have a flexibleradiator and plate-to-plate contactmounts for situations where flexibilityis important. All three includeall-brass hardware and your choiceof UltraLink Cable¨ or RG58A/U.

New flexible designreduces need forreplacement antennas.

The one piece base design eliminates theopportunity for rain to leak into the antenna. We have built the necessary washers intothe base so that both the cost and botherwill be a thing of the past. For mobile antennas with reliability, timesaving installation and competitive cost, choose the new antennas from Cushcraft.

UHF HEAVY-DUTY YAGI SELECTOR GUIDE

Increase Your Gain

You can increase your antennasystem gain by doubling thenumber of identical antennas used. For example, if you designed asystem that required more gainthan is available with one of our450 MHz antennas (the PLC-4510with 11.1 dBd gain), you coulduse two of them fed in parallel. With proper spacing betweenantennas, the result would bealmost double the gain (a 3 dBdincrease to 14 dBd).

You do have a choice whenimplementing this technique. If theantennas are placed (stacked)beside each other in the horizontalplane, the beamwidth in thehorizontal plane would bereduced. If the antennas arestacked one above the other in thevertical plane, the beamwidth inthe vertical plane would bereduced. It is simpler to stackantennas one above the otherbecause it eliminates the need foradditional support tubing andmounting brackets. Therefore, it isless expensive.

The distance between antennas iscritical. Various spacings createdifferent results. The chart aboveshows the gain increase as afunction of antenna spacing whenusing two identical antennas.Remember, when you combineantennas, some signal is lost in theadded cables and connectors.

As a rule of thumb, optimum gainincrease in a vertically stackedarray occurs at a spacing ofapproximately 0.95 wavelengths. For specific help, please contactour Tech Support Department.

Cushcraft has developed a breakthrough in contemporary mobileantenna design. The new elasticized mobile antennas feature uniquedesign innovations which allow the antenna to be inherently resistant tovibration, water intrusion, solar radiation, chemical attack, temperature change andstructural blows. The flexible Santoprene¨base is a single weather sealed, UV resistanthousing which eliminates the potential forwater at the joints between individualcomponents. Additionally, the constructionof the UHF mobile antenna design is highlyreliable for all weather performance from+135¼ F to -40¼ F (+93¼ C to -40¼ C).

The Cushcraft LAC-4 series of lightning arresters are designed to protect radio equipment from static electricity andlightning induced surges that travel on coaxial transmission lines. The LAC-4 protects your equipment from surgesup to 5,000 Amperes.

The Cushcraft LAC-4 is superior to other available devices because it presents a constant impedance to your transmissionline. Mechanically, the LAC-4 has been designed to last. All of the mechanical connections are positively secured. The gas discharge tube is easily changed by the user if necessary.

UltraLink Cable¨ Makes The Best Connections Both of our UltraLink Cables¨ were designed to provide the best transmissionlines for your applications. The smaller UltraLink Cables are designed tobe electrically and mechanically efficient for mobile applications. The newUltraLink Cable 93605 is designed for medium length run base stationapplications. It is the lowest loss RG213 size cable. When we designed these cables, we started from scratch. UltraLinkcables are easily installed, low loss, and compatible with readily availableconnectors.

Mobile UltraLinkWe started with a solid center conductor for the secure attachment of

crimp-on connectors. We insulated it with a layer of low loss Teflon¨dielectric which withstands the high temperatures encountered in mobileapplications.

Next, we applied a layer of easily removed friction bound aluminumfoil for 100% shielding. On top of that, we added tinned copper braidwith full 95% coverage for good grip to the connector's outer shell. Finally,we selected a smooth, tough PVC jacket. The result is UltraLink 92463(white) and UltraLink 92887 (black) RG58 size cable.

Base Station UltraLinkIn designing the ultimate medium run base station cable, we began with a different set of goals. The center

conductor is solid copper for the same reasons; it is low loss and aids in solid connection of crimp-on connectors.Next, we added a layer of foam polyethylene whose velocity of propagation is 89% that of air. This fact addssignificantly to the low loss characteristics of the cable but it prevents the migration of water through the dielectric.Next, we add a layer of foil and a 95% coverage braid. The jacket is black PVC which withstands sunlight andweathering for many years.

What cable do I choose formy Base Station?

Coaxial cable is like any wire inthat it has attenuation which is alot like resistance. Coaxial cableattenuation is a function of, amongother things, length, cable size, dielectric material, shielding, andfrequency. Larger cable has less lossbut larger cable also costs more.In some cases, a lot more. The gainof your antenna system is the gainof the antenna less the loss in thecoaxial cable between the antennaand the radio. The following chartillustrates some popular cables.
