INTRODUCTION

WHY FASHION FUTURES 2030?

We are part of the biggest change that humans have ever instigated. Our anthropocentric behaviour exemplifies ways of thinking and living that are unprecedented in their consequences to humanity. Fashion is a fundamental distinction of being human. As a social species, it identifies and connects us to our only source of prosperity. All fashion comes from nature, its resources and our labour are mediated by social, cultural and political relationships.

The time is now for radical change-making in those relationships. We need to draw on human ingenuity to create ways in which we can live well together, in nature. We have great capacity for creativity, yet our vision is often blinkered by habits and accepted practices which are devastatingly destructive. Whilst we have found a number of ways to make fashion more efficient in resource terms, these savings are, at best, a short term drop of lubricant in a system that is seizing up. The critical questions that we need to consider through imagining, conceiving and making connect fashion’s ecological, social, economic and cultural elements. Fashion Futures 2030 draws on practical experimentation, action research and extensive experience. We invite you to join us in this process, so that together, we can transform the fashion system to one that can help to sustain us all.

This toolkit has been designed for teachers who work with 16-18 year olds and with UK education providers in mind. The resources and guidance can be adapted for teaching in other locations or with different age groups depending on your needs.

Before you start, we recommend that you watch the Fashion Now and Fashion Futures 2030 films you’ll find in the Resources pack, and read the Fashion Futures scenario texts to get a good understanding of each of the four scenarios your students will be working on.

Using ‘Street Style’ as a case study, the Fashion Futures 2030 toolkit will explore issues around fast-fashion and sustainability.

Introductionpage 2/2

The resource is split into two parts: Part One offers an introduction, contextualising, evidencing and conducting research, while Part Two builds on previous sessions, offering activities for students from either art, design and textiles, or media-based subjects, to deepen and extend their practice. These sessions offer a full 12-week Scheme of Work and can be paced according to your timetabling. PowerPoint presentations and worksheets are available for each session.

Delivery of the sessions outlined in this toolkit can be contained within a single curriculum area, delivered as a cross-curriculum topic across relevant subject areas, or as an enrichment or challenge project within the GCSE AQA (Assessment and Qualification Alliance) curriculum, or A-level and Foundation Diploma study:

• Secondary Schools: Design Technology, Art and Design, English, Humanities and Business Studies

• 6th Form / FE colleges: Art and Design, Fashion and Media courses with possible connections to Business, Expressive Arts and Humanities courses.

We would recommend a minimum of a double-period lesson per session, or dedicated morning or afternoon college sessions, depending on timetabling.

Consider what visits and what skills support you might require to spark inspiration, offer deeper insights, push project development and provide further learning opportunities for your students.

ACCESSING LOCAL NETWORKS

Fashion manufacturers local to your area may be open to visits to show how they manufacture their products and sell to customers. Please see ‘Identifying Local Networks’ in Resources.

Teachers are encouraged to ask their students to be open-minded, explore possibilities, investigate sources and to be imaginative thinkers. Draw their attention to the recent Youth Climate Change movement inspired by Greta Thunberg and Extinction Rebellion for inspiration. Allocate a dedicated sketchbook for each pupil, or ask them to make a sketchpad from recycled paper. Encourage students to work in sketchbooks or keep their work together in a portfolio folder.
