SLC POINT SYSTEM AND AWARDS Students earn points for participation in all extra-curricular activities. Points shall be accumulated through their years at SCCHS and may lead to any of the SLC rank order awards: these being Minor, Major or Ring Awards. 1. Ring Awards - Two top point getters (1 male, 1 female). (Recipients are no longer eligible to

receive a “Major Award”.) 2. Major Awards- 16 next highest point getters, irrespective of gender, after “Ring Award”

winners. President’s Awards: subset of the “Major Award” winners. Recipients of the “President’s Award” are not eligible to receive either another “Major” SLC Award or the “Ring Award”. These are graduating students who were recipients of the SLC “Major Award” during their previous school year (i.e. Gr. 11).

3. Minor Awards - 16 next highest point getters (irrespective of gender) after the 16 “Major Award” winners.

4. Other SLC Awards Spirit Award - Upon nomination to recognize outstanding contribution to activities sponsored by the directorates (chosen jointly by the head and advisor of a given directorate). Kinetic Award - 2 graduating students (1 male, 1 female) as nominated by teachers or directorate heads, etc. – selected by the SLC Committee. Recipients are eligible to receive other awards.

Clubs ART CLUB WORKSHOP What do we do? Create art with cool new materials.

When do we start? How long do we operate? Our first meeting and creation day will be early September. We meet every other Thursday and create with cool new materials.

Who can join? Anyone with a willingness to try new things!

BEST BUDDIES What do we do? Students with varying abilities are paired and participate in fun activities throughout the year. Best Buddies provided all participants with a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a new friend.

BUSINESS CLUB What do we do? Our mission is to develop future leaders in our community by exposing our youth to business, finance, entrepreneurship and case competition activities. We host community speakers through a professional development series, attend Swift Current Chamber of Commerce events, attend provincial business events (i.e. forums in Regina or Saskatoon), practice case evaluations, host a provincial debate competition in November, host a case competition in Swift Current in April with our members, and attend provincial and interprovincial business competitions.

When do we start? How long do we operate? Watch the announcements for organizational meeting in mid to late September. Club will run until June.

Who can join? Anyone in grades 9 – 12 who wants to learn about business, economics, politics, marketing, finance and entrepreneurship.

How do I join? Come to the organizational meeting in Room 263 in September or talk to Mrs. Lowe. Members are encouraged to join year round.

COSMO SKILLS CLUB What do we do? We practice hairstyling, and esthetics in preparation for completion at both the provincial and national level.

When do we start? How long do we operate? We begin in the second week of September and run until the competition is completed.

Who can join? Anyone who has an interest in the area of Cosmetology.

How do I join? Listen for the start-up announcement and join us in the Cosmetology on that day.

DEBATE CLUB What do we do? Our mission is to develop future leaders in our community by exposing our youth debate activities (prepared speech & impromptu). We will host and attend provincial debate events. There may also be opportunities for members to participate in national or international events with the Saskatchewan Elocution and Debate Association).

When do we start? How long do we operate? Watch the announcements for organizational meeting in September. Club will run until end of May.

Who can join? Anyone in grade 9 – 12 who wants to learn about current business, economics, and political topics around the world. You don’t need any previous knowledge of debate, just the willingness to learn and participate!

How do I join? Come to the organizational meeting in Room 263 at the end of September or talk to Mrs. Lowe. Members are encouraged to join year around.

Participation fee: This club is subsidized by corporate sponsors and a provincial debate fundraiser. There may be fees for members to travel to out of town events. Contact name(s): Mrs. Lowe

DRAMA DIRECTORATE/CLUB What do we do? We typically put on a full-length play/musical in the fall and several one act plays for competition in the spring. We attend regional and provincial drama festivals.

When do we start? How long do we operate? Fall production – early September to end of November Spring production – late January to first weekend in May *It is important to be committed as rehearsals are usually after school everyday

Who can join? Any student interested in cast or crew (acting or behind the scenes)

How do I join? Watch the announcements for information on meeting for fall and spring productions or see Mr. Rumpel or Mr. Sharp.

GAY/STRAIGHT ALLIANCE What do we do? We educate ourselves and others about the LGBT+ community, in hopes of creating a safe and accepting environment for all. We help plan Swift Current Pride Week, as well as fundraise for ourselves and the Trevor Project, a help hotline for LGBT+ youth. The GSA is also a place where you can come and be yourself and feel welcome, no matter what your sexual or gender orientation may be.

When do we start? How long do we operate? Listen to announcements for start-up; we operate the full school year.

Who can join? Our GSA is an amazing group of students who are straight allies (supporters who may or may not have friends and family in the LGBT+ community) and members of the LGBT+ community. Any students Grade 9 – 12 is welcome to attend.

How do I join? Listen to announcements for our first meeting which will be on Thursdays at noon in Room 218. Members are welcome to join all year.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION (JUNIOR & SENIOR) What do we do? Outdoor ed members love the outside…we camp, hike, ski and paddle our way through some of Canada’s most beautiful wild places.

When do we start? How long do we operate? We have an orientation trip in the fall that all new members must come on.

Who can join? Anyone registered at SCCHS can join.. .but they must have come with on the orientation fall trip. Outdoor education is a lot of fun, and a lot of hard work. If you like being very physically active, love the outdoors and can’t wait to explore some cool places…this club is for you.

How do I join? Come to our first orientation meeting in September.

Participation fee: Cost varies according to the trip involved. There is also a club fee.

ROBOTICS CLUB What do we do? This team will work on building and programming robots to complete at a provincial Robot Rumble.

SADD – STUDENTS AGAINST DRINKING AND DRIVING What do we do? Students Against Drinking and Driving. A fun, student-led group that focuses on eliminating impaired driving. We plan many educational activities for the school and community and attend conferences throughout the year.

When do we start? How long do we operate? Start in September, end in early June. We meet every Friday at noon in the Library Seminar Room. Listen to announcements and watch for posters. Many activities done during weekends and noon hours throughout the year.

Who can join? Any students in Grade 9 to 12.

How do I join? We have a student start up night in September, which is the best time to join. Students are welcome to join any time of the year.

SKILLS CANADA What do we do? Members of the Skills team take their interest in the Practical and Applied Arts areas (welding, electronics, drafting, photography, cosmetology, foods, job interviews, skill demonstration and more) and work on becoming better at the skills found in the trade areas. Practice your skills all year long with your teachers for a chance to attend the Provincial and National competitions next spring.

When do we start? How long do we operate? September to June. Sign up early and practice all year.

Who can join? Anyone registered at SCCHS interested in following categories: 2D & 3D Animation, aesthetics, architectural design, autobody repair, auto service, baking, cabinet making, car painting, carpentry, cooking, electrical wiring, electronics, fashion, technology, graphic design, hairstyling, hairstyling braiding & bridal, IT networking, IT software (OFFICE), job interview, mechanical CADD, outdoor power & recreation equipment, welding, workplace safety

How do I join? Contact any of the practical and applied arts teachers. Attend the organizational meeting in September.

Participation fee: A fee for those entering the skills competition is required. We may have to do fundraising, obtain corporate sponsorship or charge fees. STUDENT LEADERSHIP COUNCIL What do we do? The Student Leadership Council (SLC) is designed to involve a larger number of students in the operations of the council. We organize events/decorate the school throughout the school year. With the committee structure, any student that wants to join the SLC will be welcome to do so. We hope that by involving more people, the work load will be divided among more students. It is our hope that this format will provide students more opportunities to get involved in the activities at SCCHS!

When do we start? How long do we operate? SLC is chosen in June – we start up in August and go all year long.

Who can join? Anyone in grades 9 -12. There are 3 elected positions and general members are interviewed.

How do I join? Listen to announcements for elections and nominations to take place in May.

YEARBOOK CLUB What do we do? Yearbook Committee is for students who like creating books and representing SCCHS through writing and photography. We are after students that are funny (we are a quirky crew), can work independently and within a team, and are willing to be committed to SCCHS's biggest project.

When do we start? How long do we operate? Yearbook Committee runs from September through to the very last day teachers are in the building. There are breaks during school examination

periods. Who can join? Open to Grades 9-12. We typically need 6-8 students on the committee.

Music CHAMBER SINGERS What do we do? The Chamber Singers is an auditioned SATB Chamber Choir at the High School level for male and female singers. Music studied is generally of a higher level and is varied in language, culture and time period.

JUNIOR JAZZ We start in September and rehearse one hour a week until the first week of June. Weekly rehearsal times will be decided after students have signed up.

Who can join? Any band student who wants to learn how to play jazz music is free to join Jr. Jazz.

MEISTERSINGERS What do we do? The Meistersingers is an SATB choir for male and female singers that focuses on teaching the basics of singing and part singing. Students will learn music from different time periods and in different languages.

When do we start? How long do we operate? Meistersingers begins at the start of every school year and lasts until June. Rehearsals take place on Tuesday and Fridays during the lunch hour. Students can choose to take this as a credited class (Choral 10, 20, 30) or as an extra-curricular activity.

Who can join? Meistersingers is open to anyone from grades 9-12 in the Swift Current area. No audition is required. Just show up and sing.

How do I join? Come to the SCCHS Music Department at 12:25 on Tuesday or Friday any time during the school year. You may also contact the choral director at SCCHS.

Participation fee: Cost varies. Students participate in many festivals and workshops throughout the year – much of which is covered through school feeds and the generous support of the Comp Choral Parents Association.

SCCHS PEP BAND What do we do? Play for various sporting events at school and in the community.

When do we start? How long do we operate? Rehearsals are called prior to performances and are usually Wednesdays after school.

Who can join? Anyone who is enrolled in band class.

SPORTS ATHLETIC POINTS AND AWARDS A Minor Athletic award is presented to a student accumulating 75 points. A Major Athletic Award is presented to a student accumulating 150 points and an Honour Athletic Award is presented to a student accumulating 225 points. In addition, four special individual awards are presented: Outstanding male and female; and Athletic Leadership Awards – male and female.

Archery The archery team will be involved in the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) and will include local competitions and the Provincial Competition in the spring. NASP approved compound bows and arrows are provided.

When do we start? How long do we operate? December to April

Badminton When do we start? How long do we operate? Tryouts are in February. Practice 3 times per week. Attend 2 or 3 tournaments and host one home tournament prior to playoffs. Season ends mid May.

BASKETBALL Senior Colt Basketball When do we start? How long do we operate? Try outs begin last week of November. Practices are held Monday – Thursday. Compete in 7 or 8 tournaments throughout the season before playoffs. This season ends mid- March

Senior Arden Basketball When do we start? How long do we operate? Try outs begin last week of November. Practices are held Monday – Thursday. Compete in 7 or 8 tournaments throughout the season before playoffs. This season ends mid- March.

Who can join? Any female students in grades 9 -12

Junior Colt Basketball When do we start? How long do we operate? Immediately following the Senior Colt tryouts. Practice starts the first week in December and the season ends with SWAC playoffs in February. There are two after school practices per week and possibly one morning practice. Games are held on Tuesdays and there are approximately four tournaments per year including the home tournament.

Who can join? Any male students in grades 9 -10 (on occasion a couple of Grade 11 students may be kept at the coach’s discretion)

Junior Arden Basketball When do we start? How long do we operate? Immediately following the Senior Arden tryouts. Practice starts the first week in December and the season ends with SWAC playoffs in February. There are two after school practices per week and possibly one morning practice. Games are held on Tuesdays and there are approximately four tournaments per year including the home tournament.

Who can join? Any female students in grades 9 -10

Grade 9 Colts Basketball When do we start? How long do we operate? First week of December. Practices are Mondays, Wednesday and Thursdays (when there is no game). Compete in 2 to 3 tournaments throughout the season. The season ends near the end of February.

Who can join? Any male students in grade 9 only

Grade 9 Ardens Basketball When do we start? How long do we operate? First week of December. Practices are Mondays, Wednesday and Thursdays (when there is no game). Compete in 2 to 3 tournaments throughout the season. The season ends near the end of February.

Who can join? Any female students in grade 9 only

Cross Country When do we start? How long do we operate? First Week of school starting in September and goes until Thanksgiving weekend.

Who can join? Any one in grades 9 – 12 who enjoys running or wants to learn more about distance running

Curling When do we start? How long do we operate? End of November to beginning of March. Practice is twice a week along with play down events (Sectionals, districts and regionals) which are held every weekend in February.

Who can join? Any one in grades 9 – 12 (12 spots for grade 9’s and 12 spots for Grades 10 to 12)

Football The football team plays in the Moose Jaw high school Football league. Six regular season games and playoffs. Practices daily.

When do we start? How long do we operate? August 28(before school starts) to the end of October/beginning of November.

Who can join? All students in Grades 9 -12 can join by attending practice before season starts.

Golf When do we start? How long do we operate? September and then again in Spring

Who can join? Students in grades 9 – 12 can join. Golfers may play in the fall season, the spring season or both.

Intramurals When do we start? How long do we operate? Will begin mid September.

Who can join? Any students in grades 9 -12

Colts Soccer When do we start? How long do we operate? Tryouts are held the first week in September. The team is selected after 2 – 3 tryouts. Team practices are Monday to Friday. A typical season includes a home tournament, 1 away tournament, Regional playoffs and possibly Provincials. The season extends into October and, if the team participates in Provincials, the season will last until the final weekend in October.

Who can join? Any male students in grades 9 -12

Ardens Soccer When do we start? How long do we operate? Tryouts begin first week in September. Our team competes in MJHSAA Soccer League, tournaments, and playoffs for provincial play.

Who can join? Any female student in grades 9 -12

Track and Field What we do? The Arden & Colt Track and Field team is a supportive environment for students to have a positive experience participating on a successful high school athletic team. Our goals: Teach the fundamental of track and field Prepare athletes for local and provincial competition Have each athlete experience success through improved personal performance. Successfully compete against the best teams in the province. Improve physical fitness Encourage students to make regular exercise part of a healthy lifestyle through adulthood.

When do we start? How long do we operate? The team begins practice either the end of March or the start of April (depending on the year). The season ends the first weekend in June.

Who can join? Any students in grades 9 -12. Listen for announcements and attend the first meeting to sign up.

VOLLEYBALL Grade 9 Colts Volleyball (Boys) When do we start? How long do we operate? Early September to early November. 2 to 3 practices per week with after school games and weekend tournaments.

Grade 9 Arden Volleyball (Girls) When do we start? How long do we operate? Mid September to Early November. Practice twice a week for a total of 4 hours. Several out of town games and tournaments.

Junior Colt Volleyball (Boys) When do we start? How long do we operate? Start first week of September. SWAC play offs are the last week of October. Practices are held three times a week. Tournament travel on weekends (approximately six tournaments)
