Last updated 24 March 2017

2016-2017

BBIS is a fast growing international school that is committed to providing an inclusive after school program, and in some cases, a lunchtime program, for students of all ages. We aim to provide our students with a balanced and varied program throughout the year. This ECA booklet contains information about the variety of activities offered to students at BBIS.

I N T R O D U C T I O N

Welcome to the Extra Curricular Activities booklet from Berlin Brandenburg International School

2016/2017 Term 3.

We strongly encourage all students to participate in this program as it offers a unique opportunity to

meet new friends, be a risk-taker, and share and learn new passions whilst having fun! The program

enables students to learn new skills and fully become part of our international school community.

The ECA program aims to further open the minds and eyes of our students, to provide them with

something new and challenging to look forward to. We are therefore excited to be able to offer

such diverse activities as chamber music, international award, athletic activities, and many more new

activities.

We are very fortunate with the generosity and commitment of the BBIS staff, as well as external and

volunteer instructors; however, it is sometimes impossible to offer activities all year round. This

does however, provide our students with a greater opportunity to try different activities throughout

the year.

Sincerely yours,

Kristina Pennell

BBIS ECA Coordinator

Term 2 = Monday, January 16th 2017 – Friday, March 24th 2017

Term 3 = Monday, March 27th 2017 – Friday, June 23rd 2017

ECAs will run during the above dates, unless otherwise stated. All students who would like to

participate in an ECA must be registered using the online form. There is an expectation of 90%

attendance during school in order to qualify for ECA external trips (e.g. GISST basketball

tournaments, Maths Competitions, etc.).

There is a two (2) week trial period where students ensure they will commit to an ECA. After the

two (2) week trial period, all students will be billed for the ECA, whether they decide to continue or

not. Students will not be able to attend an ECA if they haven’t registered online by the deadline.

Deadline for Term 3 afterschool activity registration is Friday 7 April 2017 at 15.00.

Please register via the online link below:

ask you to inform the ECA Coordinator and the activity leader in advance.

Please email your ECA activity leader and the ECA Coordinator if your child will not be

at their scheduled ECA due to sickness, absence, etc.

The majority of ECAs will include a moderate contribution to partially cover the costs they

generate. The costs for most ECAs are split into three (3) categories, and will be as follows:

FREE: No up front charge – there may be some small costs involved, but it will be clearly stated in

the booklet. There are a number of activities such as lunchtime ECAs that are free.

PAID: Up front charge – all paid ECAs should be invoiced within the first three (3) weeks of them

commencing, (by 20 April 2017 for Term 3 due to holidays). Most ECAs fall under this category.

Term 1: 100 Euros for ECAs taking place 2 or 3 times per week

60 Euros for ECAs taking place once per week

Term 2: 90 Euros for ECAs taking place 2 or 3 times per week

50 Euros for ECAs taking place once per week

Term 3: 90 Euros for ECAs taking place 2 or 3 times per week

50 Euros for ECAs taking place once per week

EXTERNAL: Up front charge direct from the instructor (not the school). There is NO free period

for this category. If a student does not continue after the 2 week trial period, a payment for the 1st

or 2nd week will be required. External instructors will provide you with a contract to complete and

inform you directly of the payment details.

C A N C E L L A T I O N S

If your child started an ECA and does not want to continue beyond the first two weeks, you can

withdraw without costs. To withdraw, you need to send an email cancellation to the ECA

Coordinator.

L A T E B U S I N F O R M A T I O N

There is no additional fee required for extra buses that run exclusively for ECAs that finish at 16.30.

The late bus is available to Early Education, Primary and Secondary School students. There are late

buses on Monday through to Friday.

The late bus leaves school at 16.45. This bus will follow a strict route and time schedule. Normal

school bus rules, as printed in the school handbooks, also apply for the late bus. Early Education

and Primary School students will need to be collected from the relevant bus stop where

appropriate. If no one is there to meet the student, they will be returned to BBIS (unless stated),

whereby the relevant person will be contacted.

Please indicate on the online form which stop your son/daughter will be getting off at.

Any students being picked up will need to do so from the Atrium of House 3 (unless other

sports activities generates a unique and attractive leisure and recreational atmosphere in Berlin,

which brings people from all social layers to the Wannsee. We particularly pay attention to the age-

appropriate promotion of children’s development. The Wassersportcenter Berlin offers a large

Through a well-proven training concept, it is possible for beginners to learn the basic skills of Sailing,

Windsurfing or SUP. Experienced water sports enthusiasts can expand their skills in one of our

advanced courses.

The long-term experience with our training concept and the skills of our highly trained sailing

instructors guarantee an effective Sailing, Windsurf and SUP education at the highest level. The

manager, Benjamin Karsch, is a fully qualified surf and

sailing instructor. Before establishing the

Today’s jazz styles range from slinky Broadway-inspired movements, to a more balletic style, and

may even include some street dance techniques. Basic jazz technique is still based on the mastery of

turns, leaps, kicks, as well as fluid and isolated movements. Through a balance of high energy and

soft, emotional movement research, students will gain a basic understanding of one of the most

socially influential styles of dance: Jazz and Contemporary Dance.

The class will be structured to move weekly through different categories within the umbrella of

Contemporary dance, including lyrical, musical theater, classical jazz, contemporary jazz, as well as

free improvisation and creative techniques through tasks and imagery. Students will gain self-

confidence, body awareness, musicality, and lead an active lifestyle. Through each genre, students will

learn proper techniques including extensions, isolations, balance, and strength as well as more

advanced turns, leaps, and jumps.

This course is aimed to address beginner/intermediate level students. Attire should not be

restricting and footwear can include dance shoes, solid colored socks, or bare feet.

The BBIS Role Playing Games Club (RPG Club) meets once a week and is student founded and

organised, with Mr. Gregory supervising the club and running some of the games. We offer members

a chance to draw upon their imaginations (rather than their computers) to play table top strategic

games like classic old school “pen & paper” role playing games, such as Dungeons and Dragons

(D&D), using dice and miniatures.

Students are responsible for purchasing their own figures, dice, drinks and snacks, although you will

not initially need anything, other than snacks and drinks. Free hardcopies and pdfs will be available

for all RPG gaming rules on Managebac, which we also use for communicating and tracking our

adventures and character development.

Gaming options may include: Warhammer Fantasy RPG, Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Warhammer 40k,

Dungeons and Dragons, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (1st ed. – 5th ed.), Traveller, Mega Traveller,

Labyrinth Lord, Mutant Futures, Call of Cthulhu, and Shadowrun.

We are currently in the middle of playing an ongoing Labyrinth Lord (Basic Dungeons and Dragons)

campaign, which will be run by Tilde (Grade 10) and supported by Mr. Gregory, and we are about to

begin playing an Advanced Dungeons and Dragons campaign which will be run by Mr. Gregory.

Come along and join us for an afternoon of creativity, high fantasy and science fiction. The sessions

normally run until 5.30pm, and students who wish to stay until 5.30pm will be required to get home

independently of the late bus. All students will require parental permission in order to do this.

Preferential places will be given to last years’ members, who wish to continue in the club, but new

members are very welcome. For more information, please contact Mr. Gregory (Secondary School

Counsellor) via [email protected] (Room 3115, Haus 3), Tel. 033203 8036 320.

School without racism – school with courage (Schule ohne Rassismus – Schule mit Courage) is a

project for students lead by students. It offers young people the chance to become active in creating

a climate of acceptance in their school and to develop citizenship skills. Students work to get their

school to commit to taking responsibility for a climate of open-mindedness and acceptance by

standing up against any form of discrimination. They have to collect signatures from at least 70% of

all students, teachers and non-teaching staff and enlist the endorsement of a celebrity or politician.

They also have to run regular events that draw attention to discrimination. For this, the school is

awarded the title “Schule ohne Rassismus – Schule mit Courage”.

What we believe in:

We speak out against all forms of ideological injustice. We deal equally with discrimination on the

basis of religious beliefs, social background, gender, physical appearance, political views and sexual

orientation. “Courage schools” say: We take responsibility in our school by standing up against

every form of discrimination, bullying and violence.

Who started this project?

„Schule ohne Rassismus“ is a project of „Verein Aktion Courage e.V.“ and was created in Germany

in June of 1995. By now there is an impressive network of 2000 schools in Germany that run regular

anti- discrimination events. The project is supported by many democratic parties and prominent

people from the world of politics, sports, religion and culture.

Who can join?

Anyone who wants to work actively to stop discrimination

Anyone who is willing to work independently and organise big and small events

Anyone who is reliable and enthusiastic and who takes responsibility.

partnerships between new and older members of the student body. By training a diverse group of

caring and open-minded volunteers in leadership and communication skills, and partnering them with

new students as they arrive, the Student Ambassadors Program hopes to build a stronger feeling of

community and responsibility among students. In turn, arriving students will feel quickly integrated

into their new school and connected with their new classmates. The ideal student ambassador is a

warm, friendly, caring person who enjoys meeting and helping new people. An ambassador is good at

talking to people and is keen to share their inside knowledge with others.

Our internationally experienced team of water sports teachers and active regatta sailors has set

itself the goal to make water sports more accessible to children and adults, and to establish sailing,

windsurfing and SUP as a sport for one and all in Berlin. Furthermore, the wide range of water

sports activities generates a unique and attractive leisure and recreational atmosphere in Berlin,

which brings people from all social layers to the Wannsee. We particularly pay attention to the age-

appropriate promotion of children’s development. The Wassersportcenter Berlin offers a large

range of boats for hire (pedal boats, rowing boats, etc.) and currently has a modern fleet for the

sailing, windsurfing and SUP courses:

30 Windsurfboards and 40 Windsurfsails

15 SUP Boards (Stand Up Paddling)

32 Dinghies

2 Catamarans

4 Motorboats

Through a well-proven training concept, it is possible for beginners to learn the basic skills of Sailing,

Windsurfing or SUP. Experienced water sports enthusiasts can expand their skills in one of our

advanced courses.

The long-term experience with our training concept and the skills of our highly trained sailing

instructors guarantee an effective Sailing, Windsurf and SUP education at the highest level. The

manager, Benjamin Karsch, is a fully qualified surf and

sailing instructor. Before establishing the

Wassersportcenter Berlin, Benjamin was the

manager of the water sports center at the Robinson

Club Esquinzo Playa on Fuerteventura. Benjamin was

also a juror at the European Windsurfing

Championship and competes actively in sailing races.

Antje Rux

VOICE

Antje Rux is a lyrical soprano and singing

teacher. She graduated from the Music

College in Weimar in Lyrical singing and

Functional vocal pedagogy (Rabine Method).

Afterwards she successfully completed one

year of Baroque Singing in Naples/ Italy and

studied Acting in Berlin. She won the

Interpretation Prize of the opera festival

“Oper-Oder-Spree” 2009 and in 2010 she

was finalist in the 8th international Baroque

singing competition Francesco Provenzale in

Naples. As a soloist she has a large

repertoire of Oratories, Opera arias and Baroque music and performs at festivals and opera houses

in Europe (Paris, Lille, Bruxelles, Amsterdam, Luxembourg, Berlin). Her focus is on the Baroque and

Classical repertoire and Lied.

She is a passionate and experienced vocal coach and teaches at the „Singakademie zu Berlin“ and at

BBIS. Functional voice training is an approach, which reduces pressure in the production of sound to

a minimum, while consistently orientating itself towards the body’s natural physiological functioning.

A new relationship between sound and body allows a rich, self- sustaining sound to develop, as well

as great flexibility and assurance while music- making or speaking.

Johannes Haage

ELECTRIC & ACOUSTIC GUITAR, ELECTRIC BASS

Born and raised in Hamburg, Germany,

Johannes Haage started playing music

on violin from age 5, but switched to

guitar about eight years later. As a high-

school exchange student in Portland,

Oregon he started playing jazz regularly

and continued to do so back home. He

started his college education at the

Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, but

soon transferred to Berlin to

successfully finish his studies with

Diplomas both in music performance

(popular and classical) and education at

the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler.

Over the years his travels playing and studying music took him to places like the Center of the Arts

in Banff, Canada, and New York City where he had the chance to play with and deepen his studies

with Bill Frisell, Brad Shepik, Ben Monder, Mark Turner, Dave Douglas, Drew Gress, Ralph Alessi

and many others.

In Berlin he has been a very active member of the vital music scene since moving there in 2002,

playing with many different musicians like Ben Kraef, Philipp Gropper, Richard Koch, Oli Steidle, the

SLOWTRIO w/ Simon Bauer & Brendan Dougherty, Diego Pinera, Christian Ugurel and many more.

The Johannes Haage Trio, featuring Andreas Lang on bass and Sebastian Merk on drums, released

the critically acclaimed album „Johannes Haage Trio plays Marlene Dietrich“ on Meta Records in late

2010.

Besides the many loose collaborations and gigs as sideman he currently enjoys very much playing in a

collaborative Trio with bassist Matthias Pichler and drummer Joe Smith, who released their debut

Album "Drift" in 2016 on shoebill music.

Johannes has taught instrumental music lessons professionally for nearly twenty years and has been

part of the BBIS Co-Curricular music staff for the last ten.

Regardless of the level of a student and style of music in focus, his goal in teaching is always to

inspire the students’ own inherent creativity via improvisation, composition and playing with other

musicians, but also to give the student a solid foundation in instrumental technique, music theory,

music notation and the stylistic history of the instrument.

He has been coordinating the Co-Curricular Music Program since 2015.

experience. While specialising in Jazz and swing

drumming, he has first-hand experience with the

many diverse styles of modern popular music and

tailors each class to the needs and desires of each

student. For his beginning students of all ages, his

teaching philosophy revolves around sharing the phenomenon of music, sound, and rhythm in a fun
