a few weeks ago the ball valve in our cold water tank was not working properly and water was dripping from the overflow pipe. a plumber was needed but before making a call, i thought i would make sure that the stop-cock tap was working. Although I had tested this during the summer when it was working well, i found to my dismay that it was stuck fast. No amount of pressure would free the tap.
later in the day when reading the January edition of “Essentially Worthing” i came across the advertisement from Panic Plumbing & Electrics highlighting the benefits of the SureStop water cock. As this seemed the ideal solution to my problem, i looked at the company’s website and also that of the makers to ensure that this was a reputable product.
i contacted nigel by email and we agreed a time for him to visit our house. When he arrived, he explained everything about the SureStop water cock, inspected the plumbing around the existing tap, and discussed with us the options for installing the new water cock. Talking to Nigel was very easy. There was no “hard sell” and he was happy to answer all our questions. We decided the product was right for us and once we had received the estimate, we asked Nigel to proceed with the work.
nigel arrived a few days later on the agreed date to install the SureStop water cock and to replace the faulty ball valve. The surestop installation itself, including the connection of the remote switch, took around an hour to complete. A shelf had to be removed from the cupboard under a sink where the existing stop cock is situated and much to our surprise and delight, nigel even adjusted the size of the shelf and fitted it back into place. once the installation was completed, nigel showed us how the new water cock worked and was very happy to answer some further questions. Everything was left clean and tidy.
having the surestop water cock is a solution to a problem we have had for a long time. This was not the first occasion that the old stop-cock has become stuck and it is good to know that these problems are a thing of the past. We can control our water with a flick of the switch which is now in an easily accessible position. The service provided by Panic Plumbing & Electrics was first class, it is very easy to discuss things with nigel and i would not hesitate in calling him again.

How long does it take to complete a job like the theatres’ piano? one like this takes about four days, stripping certain parts, adding colour and polishing it up. If I’m stripping something all the way back it takes about seven days and then with the staining and sealing you have better control over the finish.
What is your favourite part of restoration?The bodying-up, building up layers of polish so you see the depth of shine. Sometimes it’s hard to know when to stop because the finish is the real part of the job that people want to see after everything else has been done.
When not transforming pianos and furniture what else gives you pleasure?I enjoy taking photographs. I’m trying to develop an artistic style, I do lots of landscapes in both black and white and colour. I now go out knowing what will look good in the different formats, which I’ve learned since getting my camera. i recently took a picture of a World War 1 trench with a chap digging in modern dress on one side and one in wartime uniform on the other, it was great. I’m fascinated by World War 1 too.
Have you worked at the theatres before and are there other theatrical restorations you’ve done?I first worked here in 1981 but it was doing discos with the theatres’ technical manager, Jim! Then when roller discos started we’d be in here and have a good couple of hours to try out the rink before the public arrived. I’ve worked on a couple of other pianos outside the theatres, I did a rosewood one about 18 months ago which came up brilliantly.
Is there something in Worthing you’d especially like to work on?i’d really like to do the beautiful central staircase in the Town hall and all the woodwork in the Assembly Hall. I especially like long-case clocks and pianos because they’re living things. I’ve actually made a long-case clock, so I really enjoy those.

Garden Xtras is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its factory outlet shop in Lancing. Run by the Vincent family it was initially set up over two decades ago as a wholesale business.
stephen and bridget are still at the helm and having completed a two-year apprenticeship before joining the business their daughter, Maxine, is now the office manager. The couple’s son, Oliver, is often on hand to help the workforce.
The family have built up an established business, and have supplied metalwork and other items for some prestigious flower shows.

as mad as a March hare or a ‘Spring’ in your step like a new born lamb - the cold weather has obviously got to me !!
we now ‘March’ on towards Summer and it is time to enjoy some local spring lamb. also it’s a good time to get away from all the bad press surrounding beef & horsemeat especially as the many jokes about them are worse than mine !!
however to my subject, the ever popular Spring lamb. the price of lamb has dropped over 20% recently which is bad news for our farmers but a ray of hope for many of us during these hard times ........ time will tell whether our butchers can offer any reductions especially with less beef on the menu.at least we can enjoy some good red wines which accompany your Sunday roast beautifully.
there are a couple of classic pairings with lamb.traditionally a good claret works so well because the tannins cut through the fat,whilst a decent rioja has much the same effect; these two wines,in general,have a lovely balance of tannin,oak & fruit.
it is the cabernet Sauvignon though, as one of claret’s main grapes that is the ‘star’ for lamb dishes.whether on its own or blended with the likes of Merlot,cabernet Franc,Syrah ( Shiraz) or even Sangiovese in italy. these are really great friends to lamb.it is often dark and tannic,especially when young,usually ages very well and as a major plus,easy to grow.the grape is often oak aged and this shows it at its best, bringing out the tannins and makes for a wonderful heady, juicy,rich and often herby red wine with a hint of spice,and always that classic blackcurrant nose.
the grape is seen all over the world and i can remember enjoying a spit roasted lamb enjoying a lovely sunset in chile last april, all served with a wonderful cabernet, carmenere blend - definitely an evening to remember !!

What motivated you to start The Real Flying Company? a lifetime love of vintage aircraft and an opportunity to rekindle a bygone era of flying, which not only give us some lovely aircraft to fly personally but enable us to offer qualified and non-pilots alike, the chance to experience a piece of aviation history and introduce a corner of aviation which is the envy of many a modern pilot.
Describe a typical dayThe phones start ringing at 9am, with the people who are flying early, ringing up to check if the weather is suitable for their flight. The aircraft are checked over by the Pilot/instructors ready for the day and pulled out of the hangar. The first of many pots of coffee will go on, to cater for the influx of flying customers, their visitors and club members who pop in for a pit-stop and a chat on the way past. The daily paperwork for all the aircraft is updated and we’re ready for action! before long, the students arrive and after a thorough briefing it’s not long before the wonderful sound of aero-engines can be heard, which continues throughout the day. It’s a steady flow
of comings and goings from there all day long, with many phone calls ranging from customer enquiries to students and club members to book aircraft and lessons.
All of this and the flying continues until the airport ceases operations for the day, which can be 7pm on some days. While the last student is being de-briefed, the aircraft are put to bed for the night and the office only closes after the last customer has left. Having a club/social element to the business, the finish time can be quite late on some occasions!
What do you love about Shoreham Airport?It has to be the location. Nestled between the beautiful south downs to the north and the Sussex coastline to the South, it is the most delightful place to operate from. Once airborne, the view immediately can stretch as far as the isle of Wight to the West, beachy Head and the white cliffs to the East and the North Downs inland! What could be better?
How do you spend your down time?having other businesses apart from the real flying company, downtime mainly consists of catching up with domestic
chores and snatching private time with a bit of quiet reading. It is not unheard of for us to nip down to the airport on a day off and steal one of our aircraft for a trip somewhere or even just a local “jolly” on a beautiful summers evening. Bliss…
What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?When i was a youngster, my father told me that whenever i am doing anything new, or going anywhere new: “Keep your mouth shut and your eyes open until you’ve worked out what’s going on.” That one has worked very well over the years.

northbrook college, as part of the Worthing and adur Enterprise Hub, is facilitating an Enterprise Week from the 18th March to the 22nd March 2013.
This week will target local small businesses and offer a welcome boost with advice from a series of frEE events, presentations and workshops.
Topics covered will include sales tips, design, marketing, financial support, business growth and sustainability.
The Worthing and adur chamber of commerce will also be running mentoring session and there will be an event dedicated to Apprenticeships, Internships and Work Experience along with the successful ‘Gear Up for Success’ session available.
The week begins with an ‘ask the Panel’ open session with Mike Jones, of Michael Jones and Company, Zoe Clark of Euphoric and andrew sparsis of Proto restaurants, and concludes with a showcase event from Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce. This business showcase aims to highlight the larger companies within the area whilst again running more detailed workshops and networking sessions for attendees.

i know that february is a short month, but this year it has sped by. I am always glad to see the back of January, but february has almost passed me by!! isn’t it great though, March is upon us, the evenings are getting lighter, the birds are singing and the sky has on occasion been blue!
Could Your Business Be a Charity or Social Enterprise?as promised, from our discussions about business models last month, i said i would follow-up this month with some information around social enterprises and charities.
so what is a social enterprise? Well, it is an umbrella term for an
organisation that specifically helps people or communities, and several business models sit underneath it. You can still be a limited company, you could be a charity, or a community interest company (CIC). Social Enterprises are the buzz word at the moment and consequently there is a lot of information to help. One important thing to remember about social enterprises is that all profits are ploughed back into the company – owners only draw a salary, rather than dividends. What an amazing feeling it is now that Spring is on its way. A couple of weeks ago it dawned on me that it is now still daylight at 5pm! after what feels like the longest winter ever, that is a huge deal for me! it’s a real sign that warmer times are on the way, and that we can all start come out of hibernation!!
among the spring highlights locally is the opening of the new splash Point pool, due to open it’s door in May. The finished product has been slowly emerging into view in recent weeks down on brighton road, and it looks glorious! £18 million has been spent on this, and from everything i’ve seen, it’s going to be a fantastic addition to the town. I have to put my hands up and admit that i’ve never been a big fan of the dear old aquarena, so my swimming exploits in recent years have seen me, more often than not, jumping into the car and heading to Chichester. This, however, is the game-changer, and i can’t
wait to test out the facilities!sometimes it can feel like the words
“Worthing” and “progress” aren’t the easiest of bedfellows, but how great it would be to keep the momentum going that splash Point has kick-started! is it just me, or have things gone a little quiet again over the “Worthing Gateway” development at Teville Gate?! These are the amazing plans which would turn a terrible eyesore into more than 200 flats, a 100 bedroom hotel, conference facilities and a multiplex cinema. Work was originally due to commence last autumn, but, agonisingly, there is still no movement. i really hope there is some good news soon – just think of the difference these two initiatives will make to the town when both up and running!
spring is supposed to be the time for rejuvenation and optimism! i’m brimming with the latter right now, and i hope you are too!

other, equally essential tasks. overstretched, under resourced and undervalued staff will suffer from compassion fatigue. Yes, we have a vocation, but not to the point of martyrdom. How can we expect care and compassion from people who themselves have not eaten or rested and are under pressure to complete more jobs than there is time alloted?
What happened at Stafford was unforgivable, but it happened in large part because staff were stretched to the point that they couldn’t care anymore.
The service needs to be broken down into smaller, more easily accountable entities.
Targets are not the devil’s work and do serve a function, but they should not be slavishly followed to the ironic detriment of the very patients they were designed to protect.

dr sarah has the last wordI am prefacing this piece with a hefty disclaimer. What I’m about to write is nothing but my own personal viewpoint. I do not represent my department, my Trust or the wider NHS. There, done.
It’s been a Bad News Week for the NHS hasn’t it? Whilst I’m thankful I don’t work at Stafford Hospital, and the revelations of the Public inquiry have been truly shocking, is it realistic to presume that it was uniquely bad? That similar situations have not, are not or will never recur elsewhere? The justifiable public outrage that this could happen in a First World, 21st century hospital has been depressingly followed by the usual vacuous political platitudes, from the very people who created the monster in the first place.
i’m not generally a big fan of blaming ‘systems’, when those systems are necessarily made up of accountable individuals with hearts, brains and consciences. I do believe in individual accountability. That we should all take responsibility for standing up for and defending what we know to be right. Having said that individuals have reputations to defend, families to feed and mortgages to pay. Systems do take on their own life force, often stifling, controlling, emasculating and disenfranchising the very individuals who work in them. Courage to speak out often comes at a price; ostracisation and unemployment.
So how do we avoid another Stafford scandal?The NHS should stop being used as a political football. The
nation needs to decide what kind of service it wants and whether it is willing to pay for it. There then needs to be cross party consensus on it’s evolution. Top drawer services- of any kind- cost top drawer money. We all need to stop deceiving ourselves that we can have a champagne service on beer money. If we expect nurses to sit and feed patients who cannot feed themselves (which presumably we do), then we also need to accept that they cannot simultaneously be doing

provide and sustain the current level of service, let alone develop future services without more investment. Until we face this fact and dig deep into our pockets to pay for the nurses to have the time to give the care they are trained to give and want to provide, then there will be more Staffords.
oh yes, we see the first glimmer of some sunshine, a few spring flowers peaking through in the garden and suddenly we feel the optimism that seemed to disappear over the last few dark months.
Spring-cleaning might seem a little old fashioned but believe me, it’s incredibly therapeutic. i don’t mean that you necessarily have to clean your home from top to bottom although that’s very satisfying, but maybe it’s time for a de-clutter?
so…n be prepared before you start, have plenty of refuse sacks to
put rubbish or charity shop offerings into. chose a day that you can crank up the music (or enjoy the silence) without too many interruptions. Make sure you indulge in some to treats to enjoy in those well-earned breaks. Make this a pleasurable experience.
n Start with one room and if you are just de-cluttering, start with the cupboards and places that aren’t on show. get eVerything out and sort into piles of what’s to stay, what’s to be donated and what is just plain old rubbish and bag up accordingly.
n don’t be daunted by your task, it doesn’t have to be done in a day, in fact that’s unlikely if you’re really thorough. be satisfied that you’ve done one or two rooms brilliantly and set aside another day to do the next room(s).
n be respectful of others belongings, maybe encourage the family to do their bit but explain what you’re trying to achieve rather that bully them into it!
n don’t forget the “if it hasn’t got a home it goes in here” drawer, the “man” drawer the “somewhere safe & just in case” drawers we’ve all got them! you could be surprised at what you find.
See this exercise as a spring detox; we start the year detoxing ourselves, now it’s time for our homes. you’ll feel lighter and a sense of space and order will creep back in.
